Identifying and explaining the structure of complex networks at different scales has become an important problem across disciplines. At the mesoscale, modular architecture has attracted most of the attention. At the macroscale, other arrangements—e.g. nestedness or core–periphery—have been studied in parallel, but to a much lesser extent. However, empirical evidence increasingly suggests that characterizing a network with a unique pattern typology may be too simplistic, since a system can integrate properties from distinct organizations at different scales. Here, we explore the relationship between some of these different organizational patterns: two at the mesoscale (modularity and in-block nestedness); and one at the macroscale (nestedness). We show experimentally and analytically that nestedness imposes bounds to modularity, with exact analytical results in idealized scenarios. Specifically, we show that nestedness and modularity are interdependent. Furthermore, we analytically evidence that in-block nestedness provides a natural combination between nested and modular networks, taking structural properties of both. Far from a mere theoretical exercise, understanding the boundaries that discriminate each architecture is fundamental, to the extent that modularity and nestedness are known to place heavy dynamical effects on processes, such as species abundances and stability in ecology.

In this paper, we explore the relationship between Minimum Feedbackability Set (MFS) and Feedbackability Set (FS) of complex networks and use simulated annealing algorithm to obtain a relatively fast and reliable estimation of the MFS. Then, we implement this method to estimate the MFS of some real-world networks and explore whether the topological features influence the size of MFS. Additionally, we propose an optimal perturbation strategy to enhance the feedbackability of complex networks. Finally, we also research the intricate relationship between the structural properties and the feedbackability of various networks perturbed by optimal and random perturbation strategies.

Microexpressions do exist, and they are regarded as valid cues to deception by many researchers, furthermore, there is a lot of empirical evidence which substantiates this claim. However, some researchers don’t think the microexpression can be a way to catch a liar. The author elucidates the theories predicting that looking for microexpressions can be a way to catch a liar, and notes that some data can support for the utilization of microexpressions as a good way to detect deception. In addition, the author thinks that the mixed results in the area of investigating microexpressions and deception detection may be moderated by the stake. More empirical studies which employ high-stake lies to explore the relationship between microexpressions and deception detection are needed.

This chapter summarizes current interpretations of all forms of confabulations discussed in the book and reviews the relationship between the four forms of memory-related confabulations. Experimental investigation has confirmed the dissociation between various types of false memories and considerably advanced the understanding of the mechanisms of some forms of confabulation, in particular behaviourally spontaneous confabulation and false statements in anosognosia. Overall, experimental evidence is scarce; many models have no controlled experimental basis or extend their proposed range of application well beyond the empirical evidence. The chapter concludes with a call for heightened respect of basic scientific standards in the research on confabulation.

A heavy turnout is commonly believed to favor the Democrats. This study presents theoretical reasoning and empirical evidence that challenge the conventional view. Reasonable assumptions about the behavior of core and peripheral voters lead to the conclusion that the majority party is most likely to suffer when turnout increases, common sense notwithstanding. It also appears that the recent decay of partisan loyalties among voters has eroded the relationship between turnout and the vote.
