This work is devoted to the studies of optimal perturbation and its transient growth characteristics in Spiral Poiseuille flow (SPF). The Poiseuille number [Formula: see text], representing the dimensionless axial pressure gradient, is varied from 0 to 20,000. The results show that for the axisymmetric case, with the increase of axial shear, the peaks of the amplitudes of azimuthal and radial velocities are both shifted towards the inner cylinder, and a second peak appears near the outer cylinder for both velocity components. Viewing the time evolution of azimuthal shear contribution [Formula: see text] and axial shear contribution [Formula: see text] to the kinetic energy growth of the optimal perturbation, while [Formula: see text] is large enough ([Formula: see text], 20,000), the Reynolds stress mechanism in the meridional plane [Formula: see text] is dominant for the transient growth behavior in SPF relative to anti-lift-up mechanism, which is dominant in the absence of axial flow for co-rotating Taylor–Couette flow with wide gap. For the oblique mode with azimuthal wave number [Formula: see text], which becomes the optimal azimuthal mode over a wide range of azimuthal wave number ([Formula: see text]–10) when [Formula: see text] is large enough, the peaks of the amplitudes of azimuthal and radial velocities are both shifted towards the outer cylinder, opposite to the axisymmetric case.

Gravity is perturbatively renormalizable for the physical states which can be conveniently defined via foliation-based quantization. In recent sequels, one-loop analysis was explicitly carried out for Einstein-scalar and Einstein-Maxwell systems. Various germane issues and all-loop renormalizability have been addressed. In the present work we make further progress by carrying out several additional tasks. Firstly, we present an alternative 4D-covariant derivation of the physical state condition by examining gauge choice-independence of a scattering amplitude. To this end, a careful dichotomy between the ordinary, and large gauge symmetries is required and appropriate gauge-fixing of the ordinary symmetry must be performed. Secondly, vacuum energy is analyzed in a finite-temperature setup. A variant optimal perturbation theory is implemented to two-loop. The renormalized mass determined by the optimal perturbation theory turns out to be on the order of the temperature, allowing one to avoid the cosmological constant problem. The third task that we take up is examination of the possibility of asymptotic freedom in finite-temperature quantum electrodynamics. In spite of the debates in the literature, the idea remains reasonable.

AbstractUsing the latest operational version of the ENSO forecast system from the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center (NMEFC) of China, ensemble forecasting experiments are performed for El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events that occurred from 1997 to 2017 by generating initial perturbations of the conditional nonlinear optimal perturbation (CNOP) and Climatically relevant Singular Vector (CSV) structures. It is shown that when the initial perturbation of the leading CSV structure in the ensemble forecast of the CSVs-scheme is replaced by those of the CNOP structure, the resulted ensemble ENSO forecasts of the CNOP+CSVs-scheme tend to possess a larger spread than the forecasts obtained with the CSVs-scheme alone, leading to a better match between the root mean square error and the ensemble spread, a more reasonable Talagrand diagram and an improved Brier skill score (BSS). All these results indicate that the ensemble forecasts generated by the CNOP+CSVs-scheme can improve both the accuracy of ENSO forecasting and the reliability of the ensemble forecasting system. Therefore, ENSO ensemble forecasting should consider the effect of nonlinearity on the ensemble initial perturbations to achieve a much higher skill. It is expected that fully nonlinear ensemble initial perturbations can be sufficiently yielded to produce ensemble forecasts for ENSO, finally improving the ENSO forecast skill to the greatest possible extent. The CNOP will be a useful method to yield fully nonlinear optimal initial perturbations for ensemble forecasting.

AbstractTargeted observation is an appealing procedure for improving model predictions. However, studies on oceanic targeted observations have been largely based on modeling efforts, and there is a need for field validating operations. Here, we report the results of a field targeted observation that is designed based on the sensitive areas identified by the Conditional Nonlinear Optimal Perturbation approach to improve the 7th day thermal structure prediction in the Yellow Sea. By introducing the technique of cycle data assimilation and the new concept of time-varying sensitive areas, an observing strategy is designed and validated by a set of Observing System Simulation Experiments. Then, the impact of targeted observations was investigated by a choreographed field campaign in the summer of 2019. The results of the in-field Observing System Experiments show that, compared to conventional local data assimilation, conducting targeted observations in the sensitive areas can yield more benefit at the verification time. Furthermore, dynamic analysis demonstrates that the refinement of vertical thermal structures is mainly caused by the changes in the upstream horizontal temperature advection driven by the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass circulation. This study highlights the effectiveness of targeted observations on reducing the forecast uncertainty in the ocean.

Input–output analysis of transitional channel flows has proven to be a valuable analytical tool for identifying important flow structures and energetic motions. The traditional approach abstracts the nonlinear terms as forcing that is unstructured, in the sense that this forcing is not directly tied to the underlying nonlinearity in the dynamics. This paper instead employs a structured-singular-value-based approach that preserves certain input–output properties of the nonlinear forcing function in an effort to recover the larger range of key flow features identified through nonlinear analysis, experiments and direct numerical simulation (DNS) of transitional channel flows. Application of this method to transitional plane Couette and plane Poiseuille flows leads to not only the identification of the streamwise coherent structures predicted through traditional input–output approaches, but also the characterization of the oblique flow structures as those requiring the least energy to induce transition, in agreement with DNS studies, and nonlinear optimal perturbation analysis. The proposed approach also captures the recently observed oblique turbulent bands that have been linked to transition in experiments and DNS with very large channel size. The ability to identify the larger amplification of the streamwise varying structures predicted from DNS and nonlinear analysis in both flow regimes suggests that the structured approach allows one to maintain the nonlinear effects associated with weakening of the lift-up mechanism, which is known to dominate the linear operator. Capturing this key nonlinear effect enables the prediction of a wider range of known transitional flow structures within the analytical input–output modelling paradigm.

The breaking of internal gravity waves in the abyssal ocean is thought to be responsible for much of the mixing necessary to close oceanic buoyancy budgets. The exact mechanism by which these waves break down into turbulence remains an active area of research and can have significant implications on the mixing efficiency. Recent evidence has suggested that both shear instabilities and convective instabilities play a significant role in the breaking of an internal gravity wave in a high Richardson number mean shear flow. We perform a systematic analysis of the stability of a configuration of an internal gravity wave superimposed on a background shear flow first considered by Howland et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 921, 2021, A24), using direct–adjoint looping to find the perturbation giving maximal energy growth on this evolving flow. We find that three-dimensional, convective mechanisms produce greater energy growth than their two-dimensional counterparts. In particular, we find close agreement with the direct numerical simulations of Howland et al. (J. Fluid Mech., 2021, in press), which demonstrated a clear three-dimensional mechanism causing breakdown to turbulence. The results are shown to hold at realistic Prandtl numbers. At low mean Richardson numbers, two-dimensional, shear-driven mechanisms produce greater energy growth.

Artificial intelligence technologies and robot vision systems are core technologies in smart factories. Currently, there is scholarly interest in automatic data feature extraction in smart factories using deep learning networks. However, sufficient training data are required to train these networks. In addition, barely perceptible noise can affect classification accuracy. Therefore, to increase the amount of training data and achieve robustness against noise attacks, a data augmentation method implemented using the adaptive inverse peak signal-to-noise ratio was developed in this study to consider the influence of the color characteristics of the training images. This method was used to automatically determine the optimal perturbation range of the color perturbation method for generating images using weights based on the characteristics of the training images. The experimental results showed that the proposed method could generate new training images from original images, classify noisy images with greater accuracy, and generally improve the classification accuracy. This demonstrates that the proposed method is effective and robust to noise, even when the training data are deficient.

For further insight into the perturbation technique within the framework of the asymptotic iteration method (PAIM), we suggest this method to be used as an alternative method to the traditional well-known perturbation techniques. We show by means of very simple algebraic manipulations that PAIM can be directly applied to obtain the symbolic expectation value of any perturbed potential piece without using the eigenfunction of the unperturbed problem. One of the fundamental advantages of PAIM is its ability to extract a reference unperturbed potential piece or pieces from the total Hamiltonian which can be solved exactly within AIM. After all, one can easily compute the symbolic expectation values of the remaining potential pieces. As an example, the present scheme is applied to the semi-relativistic wave equation with the harmonic-oscillator potential implemented with the Fermi–Breit potential terms. In particular, the non-trivial symbolic expectation values of the Dirac delta function, and the momentum-dependent orbit–orbit coupling terms are successfully calculated. Results are then used, as an illustration, to compute the semi-relativistic s-wave heavy-light meson masses. We obtain good agreement with experimental data for the meson mass splittings cu¯, cd¯, cs¯, bu¯, bd¯, bs¯.
