AbstractESG investing evolved over time from the earlier concept of CSR. The process of evolution moved the focus from the external impact of corporate activities to the risk and return implications for financial investors of failing to address ESG issues in their portfolio selection and corporate engagement. The bridge between the two approaches was the framing of sustainability in the early part of the millennium as an overarching concept that could be mapped onto the supply of capital and the techniques employed by institutional investors. The financial model of ESG investing is now the standard approach around the world and is reflected in ESG ratings, codes, guidance and regulatory rules. It focuses on the role of capital and investors in driving change in sustainability practices and pays much less attention to the role of board decision-making and directors’ fiduciary duties. In this research, we trace the origins and trajectory of this change in emphasis from CSR to ESG and attempt to explain why it occurred. We identify shortcomings in the financial model of ESG investing and propose an alternative ‘entity’ model, which we argue would more effectively promote sustainability in the corporate sector around the world.

The purpose of this chapter is to compare the performance of a deep learning modeling technique to predict market performance compared to conventional prediction modeling techniques. A secondary purpose of this chapter is to describe the degree to which financial risk tolerance can be used to predict future stock market performance. Specifically, the models used in this chapter were developed to test whether aggregate investor financial risk tolerance is of value in establishing risk and return market expectations. Findings from this chapter's examples also provide insights into whether financial risk tolerance is more appropriately conceptualized as a predictor of market returns or as an outcome of returns.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the comparative impact of conventional and Islamic bonds over returns. It provides useful insights to investors to diversify investment by lowering the risk to the optimum level. This study examines the impact of the conventional and Islamic portfolios on returns through simple OLS regression, suggesting that Sukuk returns are positive and significant. Simultaneously, conventional bonds show a negative trend, but in the long run, the returns are significant. It indicates that the market is volatile due to macroeconomic factors that can reduce risks through portfolio diversification. Thus, this research suggests that investment can be secured by taking a rational portfolio decision that confirms robustness. Therefore, it is a good opportunity for the investors to get high margins over the investment tenure.

AbstractIt is well documented that the biopharmaceutical sector has exhibited weak financial returns, contributing to underinvestment. Innovations in the industry carry high risks; however, an analysis of systematic risk and return compared to other asset classes is missing. This paper investigates the time–frequency interconnectedness between stocks in the biotech sector and ten asset classes using daily cross-country data from 1995 to 2019. We capture investors' heterogeneous investment horizons by decomposing time series according to frequencies. Using a maximal overlap discrete wavelet transform (MODWT) and a dynamic conditional correlation (DCC)-Student-t copula, diversification potentials are revealed, helping investors to reap the benefits of investing in biotech. Our findings indicate that the underlying assets exhibit nonlinear asymmetric behavior that strengthens during periods of turmoil.
