scholarly journals On the distribution of intensity in the X-ray spectra of certain long-chain organic compounds

Recently, many compounds, having as the basis of their structure a long chain of carbon atoms, have been investigated by means of X-rays. Although the complete solution of the crystal structure of these compounds presents great difficulties, certain measurements, which can readily be made, appear capable of a simple interpretation in terms of the molecular structure. It is found, for example, that there is one plane in the crystal which has a very much larger spacing than any of the others, and the magnitude of this spacing is very simply related to the number of carbon atoms in the molecule. In any series, as the molecular chain is increased by the continued addition of CH 2 groups, this spacing increases uniformly. This must mean that the molecules are oriented lengthwise between such planes, so that an increase in the length of the molecule results in a corresponding increase in the spacing. It does not follow that the molecules are so arranged that the direction of their length is perpendicular to these planes ; but, for any one series, the angle which this direction makes with the normal to the plane must remain very nearly constant; in certain series the molecules appear to be very nearly at right angles to the planes. A consideration of the results of many such measurements led to the conclusion that, from an X-ray point of view, the various series may be divided into two groups, ( a ) those in which the planes are separated by the length of a single molecule, ( b ) those in which the spacing corresponds to the length of two molecules. It is possible to predict with considerable certainty to which of these two classes a series will belong. If, at the end of the molecule, there is a group which is chemically active as in the cases of the fatty acids, alcohols, etc., series, it seems reasonable to conclude that, where the double length is found, the two molecules will be arranged end-to-end in opposite directions, the active group of the one molecule being oriented towards the active group of the other.

The substances which are investigated in this paper have the following chemical formula: CH 3 . (CH 2 ) m A or CH 3 (CH 2) n CH ⋮ CH (CH 2 ) p A. These molecules consist of two parts. One which is called the chain or hydrocarbon-chain contains a relatively large number of CH 2 groups. All these groups are chemically identical ( n -compounds) except those near the unsaturated bond or near the ends of the chain. The other part “A” is a comparatively small radical such as — CH 3 or — COOH or —CH . Br . COOH and is called the end group. Substances with hydrocarbon chains occur very frequently in the organic world. An X-ray investigation of a few typical representatives is likely to supply the key for the crystal structure of a large number of chemically similar substances. Such an investigation is not only interesting from the point of view of stereo-chemistry but also in connection with monomolecular films. Considerable work has been done in recent years on very thin films which these long-chain compounds form on a water surface. Langmuir (1) and later Adam (2) have measured the area occupied by a single molecule in such a film. A corresponding area has been obtained from measurements on a solid crystal by means of X-rays. A comparison of the two data leads to several interesting conclusions. This work was started more than three years ago. It is far from being complete now, but it has reached a stage where a publication does not seem to be premature.

AbstractAn x-ray spectrometer with experimental results is herewith described using a radiosotope source Fe55 having a halflife of 2.6 years. As a result of the disintegration, the managanese x-rays are capable of exciting fluorescent x-rays of such elements as sulfur, chlorine, potassium, calcium, scandium and titanium in aqueous solutions. These elements with the Ka wavelengths ranging from 5.3729 Å to 2.7496 Å may be designated as between the very soft x-rays on the one hand and the hard x-rays on the other. The x-ray spectrometer presently described has achieved a resolution of 136 ev, FWHM.Simultaneously, these elements have also been quantitatively determined by conventional x-ray fluorescent spectrometers. Since one of the spectrometers is designed to operate in vacuum as well as in helium or air, determination of sulfur, potassium and calcium were carried out in vacuum. Determination of chlorine was carried out in a helium atmosphere, Calcium, scandium and titanium were determined in air with an air-path spectrometer.In the present study aqueous solutions containing these elements were used. The use of aqueous solutions has the inherent advantages of being homogeneous and free from effect of particle size.


The technique of sterilising one ovary and allowing the other ovary to remain untreated was originally evolved (Parkes, 8) in order to make possible the accurate study of the rôle of the corpus luteum during pregnancy and lactation. Early in the experiments, however, it was noticed that litters from such unilaterally sterilised mice approximated closely to the normal size. It was later found that, with one ovary sterilised by X-rays, the other ovary undergoes true compensatory hypertrophy, such as has been observed by many authors to follow unilateral or sub-total ovariotomy (1, 4, 5, 6). Since the facts appeared to be of interest from the point of view of the mechanism of compensatory hypertrophy, the experiments on the corpus luteum were so arranged as to permit of collecting the data required to demonstrate hypertrophy of the reamining ovary. II.— Methods and Material . Sterilisation Technique .—The method of carrying out these unilateral irradiations has been described elsewhere (Parkes, 8) and it need only be said here that irradiation took place at 4 weeks old, and that in every case the right ovary was exposed, while the left was protected.

ZnOTe compounds were grown by DC magnetron cosputtering from pure Tellurium (Te) and Zinc (Zn) cathodes in O2/Ar atmosphere. The applied power on the Zn target was constant equal to 100 W, while the one applied on the Te target took two values, i.e., 5 W and 10 W. Thus, two sample series were obtained in which the variable parameter was the distance from the Te targets to the substrate. Sample compositions were determined by Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS) experiments. Structural analysis was done using X-Ray diffraction (XRD) spectrometry and the growth of the hexagonal w-ZnO phase was identified in the XRD spectra. RBS results showed high bulk homogeneity of the samples forming ZnOTe alloys, with variable Te molar fraction (MF) ranging from 0.48–0.6% and from 1.9–3.1% for the sample series obtained at 5 W and 10 W, respectively. The results reflect great differences between the two sample series, particularly from the structural and optical point of view. These experiments point to the possibility of Te doping ZnO with the permanence of intrinsic defects, as well as the possibility of the formation of other Te solid phases when its content increases. The results and appreciable variations in the band gap transitions were detected from Photoluminescence (PL) measurements.

SummaryThe importance and difficulties of determining the height of hard X-ray sources in the solar atmosphere, in order to distinguish source models, have been discussed by Brown and McClymont (1974) and also in this Symposium (Brown, 1975; Datlowe, 1975). Theoretical predictions of this height, h, range between and 105 km above the photosphere for different models (Brown and McClymont, 1974; McClymont and Brown, 1974). Equally diverse values have been inferred from observations of synchronous chromospheric EUV bursts (Kane and Donnelly, 1971) on the one hand and from apparently behind-the-limb events (e.g. Datlowe, 1975) on the other.

Abstract The logic of evidence in Bartolistic literature, A reading of the Summa circa testes et examinationem eorum (Ms. Bruxelles, B.R., II 1442, fol.101 ra – 103 rb). – Bartolus teaches how to read testimonies from a logical point of view. On the one hand, the facts that the witness recounts constitute the minor premise of a syllogism, its conclusion being their legal characterization; therefore he is prohibited from pronouncing directly on any legal matter. On the other hand, given that the witness' knowledge of the facts has to stem from sensory perception, the information he provides has at least to constitute the minor premise of another syllogism, making for establishing the causa of his testimony.

It is well known that in many orders of typically winged insects species occur which in the adult stage are apterous or have the wings so reduced in size that flight is impossible. Sometimes the reduction of wings affects one sex only, as in the case of the females of certain moths, but in the majority of cases it is exhibited by both sexes. In many instances wing dimorphism occurs irrespective of sex, one form of the species having fully developed wings and the other greatly reduced wings. In some species the wings are polymorphic. The problem of the origin of reduced wings and of other functionless organs is one of great interest from the evolutionary point of view. Various theories have been advanced in explanation, but in the majority of cases the various aspects of the subject are too little known to warrant discussion. More experimental work is required to show how far environmental conditions on the one hand, and hereditary factors on the other, are responsible for this phenomenon. Those species which exhibit alary dimorphism afford material for the study of the inheritance of the two types of wings, but only in a few cases has this method of research been utilized.

Rosemberg (1991) has made a critical review of a long-standing discussion between Eastern philologists and Buddhist philosophers. The discussion is centered around the translation of the doctrine on the one hand, and its philosophical systematization on the other hand. When scientific-philological translation prevails, the literal meaning of Buddhist terminology is declared to be its basis. The young scholar, who had specialized in Japan, studied Buddhism from Japanese and Chinese sources and collected lexicographic material from non-Hindu sources. After comparing them, he encountered inaccuracies in the translation. In an attempt to overcome them, he preferred the point of view of the philosophy of Buddhism. The conclusion that he has drawn in the preface of this edition is that the study should begin with a systematization of antiquity.

Prominent Japanese economist, specialist in colonial politics, a professor of Im­perial Tokyo University, Yanaihara Tadao (1893‒1961) was one of a few people who dared to oppose the aggressive policy of Japanese government before and during the Second World War. He developed his own view of patriotism and na­tionalism, regarding as a true patriot a person who wished for the moral develop­ment of his or her country and fought the injustice. In the years leading up to the war he stated the necessity of pacifism, calling every war evil in the ultimate, divine sense, developing at the same time the concept of the «just war» (gisen­ron), which can be considered good seen from the point of view of this, imper­fect life. Yanaihara’s theory of pacifism is, on one hand, the continuation of the one proposed by his spiritual teacher, the founder of the Non-Church movement, Uchimura Kanzo (1861‒1930); one the other hand, being a person of different historical period, directly witnessing the boundless spread of Japanese militarism and enormous hardships brought by the war, Yanaihara introduced a number of corrections to the idealistic theory of his teacher and proposed quite a specific explanation of the international situation and the state of affairs in Japan. Yanai­hara’s philosophical concepts influenced greatly both his contemporaries and successors of the pacifist ideas in postwar Japan, and contributed to the dis­cussion about interrelations of pacifism and patriotism, and also patriotism and religion.

AbstractRecent spectropolarimetric surveys of bright, hot stars have found that ~10% of OB-type stars contain strong (mostly dipolar) surface magnetic fields (~kG). The prominent paradigm describing the interaction between the stellar winds and the surface magnetic field is the magnetically confined wind shock (MCWS) model. In this model, the stellar wind plasma is forced to move along the closed field loops of the magnetic field, colliding at the magnetic equator, and creating a shock. As the shocked material cools radiatively it will emit X-rays. Therefore, X-ray spectroscopy is a key tool in detecting and characterizing the hot wind material confined by the magnetic fields of these stars. Some B-type stars are found to have very short rotational periods. The effects of the rapid rotation on the X-ray production within the magnetosphere have yet to be explored in detail. The added centrifugal force due to rapid rotation is predicted to cause faster wind outflows along the field lines, leading to higher shock temperatures and harder X-rays. However, this is not observed in all rapidly rotating magnetic B-type stars. In order to address this from a theoretical point of view, we use the X-ray Analytical Dynamical Magnetosphere (XADM) model, originally developed for slow rotators, with an implementation of new rapid rotational physics. Using X-ray spectroscopy from ESA’s XMM-Newton space telescope, we observed 5 rapidly rotating B-types stars to add to the previous list of observations. Comparing the observed X-ray luminosity and hardness ratio to that predicted by the XADM allows us to determine the role the added centrifugal force plays in the magnetospheric X-ray emission of these stars.
