Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory laser tracking systems

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory operates four laser satellite-ranging systems in support of geodetic and geophysical research. The lasers-located in Brazil, Peru, Australia, and Arizona-have been in operation for more than 5 years and have provided ranging data at accuracy levels of a metre or better. To meet new requirements in geophysics, these systems are now being upgraded to improve range accuracy and performance. The lasers are being equipped with electronic pulse processors, to analyse returnpulse wave shape, and pulse choppers, to reduce laser pulse width. Initial results indicate that the upgraded ranging system hardware will meet the decimetre ranging-accuracy requirements for the Geos 3 and Seasat satellites and for Earth-dynamics projects based on satellites such as Starlette.

Used YAG pulse laser to weld 304 stainless steel nuts, studied about the parameters such as peak power, pulse width, defocus distance impacting on the performance of the joints welded by laser. The studies showed that the tensile strength and torque of the nuts increased as the peak power and the pulse width increased.Burn through in welding easy occur when laser pulse energy is too big, pulse width is too wide or defocus distance is too low.

This paper presents a comparative study of the application of Thyristor versus IGBT in AC-DC controlled power converter. Both simulation and practical experiment have been carried out to test the relationship between the average output voltage (Vdc) with firing angle (α, for Thyristor) and triggering pulse width (, for IGBT). Also the total harmonic distortion (THD) has been observed in both the cases. It is observed that IGBT based power converter introduces more harmonics in the system, in spite of more symmetrical output voltage wave shape.
