A novel, aerobic, psychrotolerant, Gram-stain-positive, endospore-forming strain, NHI-2T, was isolated from oil-contaminated soil near a gas station in Mongolia. This strain was characterized by motile rods and grew over a wide range of temperatures ( − 2 to 40 °C) with optimal growth at 28–30 °C. It tolerated salt concentrations of up to 7 % over a five-day incubation period. Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain NHI-2T belongs to the genus Psychrobacillus. Sequence similarity between NHI-2T and members of the genus Psychrobacillus with validly published names ranged from 97.83 to 98.18 %. DNA–DNA hybridization indicated less than 70 % relatedness to reference strains within the genus. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 36 mol%. This strain contained MK-8 as a predominant isoprenoid menaquinone. NHI-2T had ornithine in the cell wall similar to reference strains of the genus Psychrobacillus. The major fatty acids present in NHI-2T were anteiso-C15 : 0 (51.0 %), iso-C15 : 0 (9.1 %) and anteiso-C17 : 0 (8.0 %). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol. These data highlight that the phenotype of strain NHI-2T differs from that of related species in terms of chemotaxonomic properties and genotype characteristics. Therefore, this strain is proposed as a representative of a novel species, named Psychrobacillus soli. The type strain is NHI-2T ( = KEMB 9005-135T = KACC 18243T = NBRC 110600T).

A novel Gram-negative, motile, bacteriochlorophyll b-containing purple non-sulfur bacterium, strain JA248T, was isolated from phototrophic enrichments of a yellow–green epilithic biofilm sample collected from Gulmarg, India. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain JA248T was 63.8 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain JA248T had highest similarity to members of the genus Blastochloris and was closely related to Blastochloris sulfoviridis DSM 729T (98.5 % sequence similarity) and Blastochloris viridis DSM 133T (98.4 %) of the class Alphaproteobacteria. Strain JA248T was characterized based on polyphasic taxonomy, and distinct phenotypic and molecular differences based on DNA–DNA hybridization (relatedness of <46.5 % with the two species of the genus Blastochloris), multilocus sequence analysis, and phenotypic and chemotaxonomic evidence separated strain JA248T from other species of the genus Blastochloris. Strain JA248T therefore represents a novel species in the genus Blastochloris, for which the name Blastochloris gulmargensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JA248T ( = JCM 14795T  = DSM 19786T).

In this study, a novel betaproteobacterium, strain DPN7T, was isolated under mesophilic conditions from compost because of its capacity to utilize the organic disulfide 3,3′-dithiodipropionic acid. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain DPN7T revealed 98.5 % similarity to that of Tetrathiobacter kashmirensis LMG 22695T. Values for sequence similarity to members of the genera Alcaligenes, Castellaniella and Taylorella, the nearest neighbours of the genus Tetrathiobacter, were about 95 % or less. The DNA G+C content of strain DPN7T was 55.1 mol%. The level of DNA–DNA hybridization between strain DPN7T and T. kashmirensis LMG 22695T was 41 %, whereas it was much lower between strain DPN7T and Alcaligenes faecalis LMG 1229T (7 %) or Castellaniella defragrans LMG 18538T (5 %). This genotypic divergence was supported by differences in biochemical and chemotaxonomic characteristics. For this reason, and because of the differences in the protein and fatty acid profiles, strain DPN7T should be classified within a novel species of Tetrathiobacter, for which the name Tetrathiobacter mimigardefordensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is strain DPN7T (=DSM 17166T=LMG 22922T).

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, pleomorphic rod-shaped, orange–red-pigmented, facultatively aerobic and haloalkaliphilic archaeon, strain MK13-1T, was isolated from commercial rock salt imported from Pakistan. The NaCl, pH and temperature ranges for growth of strain MK13-1T were 3.0–5.2 M NaCl, pH 8.0–11.0 and 15–50 °C, respectively. Optimal growth occurred at 3.2–3.4 M NaCl, pH 9.0–9.5 and 45 °C. Addition of Mg2+ was not required for growth. The major polar lipids of the isolate were C20C20 and C20C25 archaeol derivatives of phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol phosphate methyl ester. Glycolipids were not detected. The DNA G+C content was 64.1 mol%. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain MK13-1T was most closely related to those of the species of the genus Halorubrum, Halorubrum luteum CECT 7303T (95.9 % similarity), Halorubrum alkaliphilum JCM 12358T (95.3 %), Halorubrum kocurii JCM 14978T (95.3 %) and Halorubrum lipolyticum JCM 13559T (95.3 %). The rpoB′ gene sequence of strain MK13-1T had < 90 % sequence similarity to those of other members of the genus Halorubrum. Based on the phylogenetic analysis and phenotypic characterization, strain MK13-1T may represent a novel species of the genus Halorubrum, for which the name Halorubrum gandharaense sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain MK13-1T ( = JCM 17823T = CECT 7963T).

A novel, moderately halophilic bacterium belonging to the genus Salinicoccus was isolated from crabs preserved in soy sauce: a traditional Korean fermented seafood. Colonies of strain CrmT were ivory and the cells were non-motile, Gram-positive cocci. The organism was non-sporulating, catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. The major fatty acids of strain CrmT were iso-C15 : 0 (22.0 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (40.6 %) and anteiso-C17 : 0 (12.1 %). The cell wall peptidoglycan contained lysine and glycine, and the major isoprenoid quinone was MK-6. The polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified glycolipid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 47.8 mol%. Strain CrmT was closely related to the type strain of Salinicoccus halodurans, with which it shared 96.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. The DNA–DNA hybridization value between strains CrmT and S. halodurans DSM 19336T was 7.6 %. Based on phenotypic, genetic and phylogenetic data, strain CrmT should be classified as a novel species within the genus Salinicoccus, for which the name Salinicoccus carnicancri sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CrmT (=KCTC 13301T =JCM 15796T).

A Gram-positive, yellowish bacterium strain AK-1Twas isolated from soil sample collected from peanut (Arachis hypogaea) crop field and studied by using a polyphasic approach. The organism had morphological and chemotaxonomic properties consistent with its classification in the genusAgromyces. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain AK-1Twas closely related toAgromyces aurantiacus(98.6%) followed byAgromyces soli(98.3%),Agromyces tropicus(97.6%),Agromyces ulmi(97.3%),Agromyces flavus(97.2%), andAgromyces italicus(97.0%), whereas the sequence similarity values with respect to the otherAgromycesspecies with validly published names were between 95.3 and 96.7 %. However, the DNA-DNA hybridization values obtained between strain AK-1Tand other related strains were well below the threshold that is required for the proposal of a novel species. The DNAG+Ccontent of the strain is 71.8 mol%. The above data in combination with the phenotypic distinctiveness of AK-1Tclearly indicate that the strain represents a novel species, for which the nameAgromyces arachidissp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AK-1T(=MTCC 10524T= JCM 19251T).

A novel halophilic archaeon, strain EJ-32T, was isolated from water from Lake Ejinor in Inner Mongolia, China. The taxonomy of strain EJ-32T was studied by using a polyphasic approach. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, strain EJ-32T was shown to be phylogenetically related to Halorubrum coriense (97.9 %), Halorubrum trapanicum (97.9 %), Halorubrum sodomense (97.8 %), Halorubrum tebenquichense (97.8 %), Halorubrum xinjiangense (97.6 %), Halorubrum terrestre (97.4 %), Halorubrum distributum (97.1 %) and Halorubrum saccharovorum (96.4 %). Strain EJ-32T was found to be neutrophilic, non-motile and Gram-negative. It grew in medium containing saturation concentrations of NaCl and did not require magnesium for optimal growth. The G+C content of the DNA is 64.0 mol%. Values for DNA–DNA hybridization with respect to phylogenetically related Halorubrum species were ≤49 %, indicating that EJ-32T constitutes a different genospecies. The data show that strain EJ-32T represents a novel species of the genus Halorubrum, for which the name Halorubrum ejinorense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is EJ-32T (=CECT 7194T=CGMCC 1.6782T=JCM 14265T).

YF-3T is a Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming, yellow–orange, rod-shaped bacterium. Optimal growth conditions were at 30 °C, pH 7.0 and 1 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis, on the basis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence, showed that strain YF-3T was closely related to the strains Chryseobacterium hispalense AG13T and Chryseobacterium taiwanense Soil-3-27T with 98.71 % and 96.93 % sequence similarity, respectively. Strain YF-3T contained MK-6 as the main menaquinone and had a polyamine pattern with sym-homospermidine as the major component. Its major polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine. The dominant fatty acids of strain YF-3T were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, summed feature 9 (comprising iso-C17 : 1ω9c and/or C16 : 0 10-methyl) and summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c). The DNA G+C content of strain YF-3T was 37 mol%. The DNA–DNA relatedness levels between strain YF-3T and the most closely related strains, C. hispalense AG13T and C. taiwanense Soil-3-27T, were 31.7 ± 2.1 % and 28.4 ± 5.4 %, respectively. Based on these results, a novel species named Chryseobacterium shandongense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YF-3T ( = CCTCC AB 2014060T = JCM 30154T).

A Gram-staining-negative, halophilic, facultatively anaerobic, motile, rod-shaped and nitrogen-fixing bacterium, designated strain S37T, was isolated from an artificial oil-spill sediment sample from the coast of Taean, South Korea. Cells grew at 10–37 °C and pH 5.0–9.0, with optimal growth at 28 °C and pH 6.0–8.0. Growth was observed with 1–9 % (w/v) NaCl in marine broth, with optimal growth with 3–5 % NaCl, but no growth was observed in the absence of NaCl. According to the results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain S37T represents a member of the genus Vibrio of the class Gammaproteobacteria and forms a clade with Vibrio plantisponsor MSSRF60T (97.38 %), Vibrio diazotrophicus ATCC 33466T (97.31 %), Vibrio aestuarianus ATCC 35048T (97.07 %) Vibrio areninigrae J74T (96.76 %) and Vibrio hispanicus LMG 13240T (96.76 %). The major fatty acids were C16 : 0, C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c and C18 : 1ω7c/C18 : 1ω6c. The DNA G+C content was 41.9 %. The DNA–DNA hybridization analysis results showed a 30.2 % association value with the closely related type strain V. plantisponsor DSM 21026T. On the basis of phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, strain S37T represents a novel species of the genus Vibrio, for which the name Vibrio oceanisediminis sp. nov., is proposed with the type strain S37T ( = KEMB 2255-005T = JCM 30409T).

A novel actinobacterium, designated strain NEAU-QY2T, was isolated from the leaves of Sonchus oleraceus L. specimen, collected from Wuchang, Heilongjiang Province, China. A polyphasic study was carried out to establish the taxonomic position of this strain. The organism formed single spores with rough surfaces on substrate mycelia. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain NEAU-QY2T belonged to the genus Plantactinospora and formed a monophyletic clade with its closest related strains Plantactinospora endophytica YIM 68255T (99.2 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Plantactinospora veratri NEAU-FHS4T (98.8 %) and Plantactinospora mayteni YIM 61359T (98.7 %), an association that was supported by a bootstrap value of 90 % in the neighbour-joining tree and also recovered with the maximum-likelihood algorithm. However, DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain NEAU-QY2T and the three closely related strains were below 70 %. With reference to phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic data and DNA–DNA hybridization results, strain NEAU-QY2T was distinguished from closely related strains and is classified as representing a novel species of the genus Plantactinospora, for which the name Plantactinospora sonchi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NEAU-QY2T ( = CGMCC 4.7216T = JCM 30345T).

A halotolerant, psychrotolerant and methylotrophic methanogen, strain SY-01T, was isolated from the saline Lake Tus in Siberia. Cells of strain SY-01T were non-motile, cocci and 0.8–1.0 µm in diameter. The only methanogenic substrate utilized by strain SY-01T was methanol. The temperature range of growth for strain SY-01T was from 4 to 40 °C and the optimal temperature for growth was 30 °C. The pH range of growth was from pH 7.2 to 9.0, with optimal growth at pH 8.0. The NaCl range of growth was 0–1.55 M with optimal growth at 0.51 M NaCl. The G+C content of the genome of strain SY-01T was 43.6 mol % as determined by genome sequencing. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that strain SY-01T was most closely related to Methanolobus zinderi SD1T (97.3 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), and had 95.5–97.2 % similarities to other Methanolobus species with valid names. Genome relatedness between strain SY-01T and DSM 21339T was computed using average nucleotide identity and digital DNA–DNAhybridization, which yielded values of 79.7 and 21.7 %, respectively. Based on morphological, phenotypic, phylogenetic and genomic relatedness data presented here, it is evident that strain SY-01T represents a novel species of the genus Methanolobus , and the name Methanolobus halotolerans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SY-01T (=BCRC AR10051T=NBRC 113166 T=DSM 107642T).
