Two Gram-stain-positive, mycelium-forming actinobacteria (strains 14-Be-013T and 02-Gi-014) were isolated from walls colonized with moulds and studied taxonomically. The isolates formed yellowish-pigmented substrate mycelium showing no fragmentation. Comparative analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that these bacteria are most closely related to genera within the family Nocardiopsaceae, but form a separate lineage within this family. Highest sequence similarities were to the type strains of Marinactinospora thermotolerans (96.0 % to 14-Be-013T), Nocardiopsis dassonvillei subsp. albirubida and Nocardiopsis lucentensis (both 95.3 % to 14-Be-013T). Whole-cell hydrolysates contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid of the cell wall and no diagnostic sugars. Mycolic acids were absent. The major menaquinones were MK-10(H4), MK-11(H4) and MK-12(H2). The polar lipid profile consisted of phosphatidylcholine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and unknown lipids. Major fatty acids iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and C18 : 1 ω9c supported the affiliation of these isolates to the family Nocardiopsaceae. Phenotypic analysis (including chemotaxonomy) further differentiated strains 14-Be-013T and 02-Gi-014 from the most closely related members of the genera Marinactinospora and Nocardiopsis. Since the two strains form a distinct lineage in the 16S rRNA gene sequence-based phylogenetic tree, the novel genus Murinocardiopsis gen. nov. with the type species Murinocardiopsis flavida sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Murinocardiopsis flavida is 14-Be-013T (=DSM 45312T =CCM 7612T).

The taxonomic position of a Gram-stain-positive, aerobic strain, designated 03-9939T, isolated from a soil sample collected from Xinjiang Province, China, was established using a polyphasic approach. Whole-cell hydrolysates of strain 03-9939T contained galactose and ribose as diagnostic sugars and meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diamino acid. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4). The phospholipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylcholine. The major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0 (61.5 %) and iso-C16 : 1 H (11.6 %). The genomic DNA G+C content was 68.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain 03-9939T should be placed within the family Actinosynnemataceae, in which the strain formed a distinct lineage. Signature nucleotides in the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that the strain contained a genus-specific diagnostic nucleotide signature pattern. The combination of phylogenetic analysis, phenotypic characteristics and chemotaxonomic data supported the conclusion that strain 03-9939T represents a novel species in a new genus of the family Actinosynnemataceae, for which the name Alloactinosynnema album gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. Strain 03-9939T (=DSM 45114T =KCTC 19294T =CCM 7461T) is the type strain of Alloactinosynnema album.

A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-motile, non-spore-forming and coccus-shaped strain, designated strain G463T, was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of Salicornia europaea L. collected from Lake Gudzhirganskoe in Siberia. Based on 16S rRNA gene phylogeny, strain G463T belonged to the genus Hoyosella , with the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Hoyosella altamirensis DSM 45258T (96.1%). The major fatty acids were C17:1 ω8c, C16:0, C15 : 0 and C17:0. The strain contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the cell-wall diagnostic diamino acid and arabinose, galactose and ribose as the whole-cell sugars. MK-8 and MK-7 were the predominant menaquinones. The polar lipid profile comprised diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, one unidentified phosphoglycolipid, two unidentified glycolipids and several unidentified lipids. Acetyl was the muramyl residue. Mycolic acids (C28–C34) were present. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 68.3 mol%. Based on its phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic features, strain G463T was considered to represent a novel species of the genus Hoyosella , for which the name Hoyosella lacisalsi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is G463T (=JCM 33650T=CGMCC 1.17230T).

The taxonomic position of two mycolic-acid-producing actinomycetes, isolates J81T and J82, which were recovered from activated sludge foam, was clarified. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence studies indicated that the organisms formed a distinct lineage within the Corynebacterineae 16S rRNA gene tree. The taxonomic integrity of this group was underpinned by a wealth of phenotypic data, notably characteristic rudimentary right-angled branching. In addition, isolate J81T contained the following: meso-diaminopimelic acid, arabinose and galactose; N-glycolated muramic acid residues; a dihydrogenated menaquinone with eight isoprene units as the predominant isoprenologue; a fatty acid profile rich in oleic and palmitoleic acids and with relatively small proportions of myristic, stearic and tuberculostearic acids; mycolic acids with 44–52 carbons; and diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylinositol mannosides as major polar lipids. Strain J81T was found to have a chemotaxonomic profile that serves to distinguish it from representatives of all of the other taxa classified as belonging to the suborder Corynebacterineae. In the light of these data, it is proposed that the two isolates be classified in a novel monospecific genus. The name proposed for this taxon is Millisia brevis gen. nov., sp. nov.; strain J81T (=DSM 44463T=NRRL B-24424T) is the type strain of Millisia brevis.

A marine actinomycete strain, designated KSW2-15T, was isolated from a dried seaweed sample collected from a sandy beach on the coast of Jeju in the Republic of Korea. The organism produced non-motile, non-endospore-forming, Gram-positive, coccoid cells. The colonies were circular, translucent and yellow in colour with entire margins. meso-Diaminopimelic acid was present as the diamino acid of the peptidoglycan. The acyl type of the muramic acid was acetyl. Mycolic acids were not present. The predominant menaquinone was MK-8(H4). The polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and diphosphatidylglycerol. The major cellular fatty acids were of the saturated, unsaturated and iso-branched methyl types. The DNA G+C content was 74 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain KSW2-15T formed a loose association with ‘Candidatus Nostocoida limicola’, within the radiation of the family Intrasporangiaceae of the suborder Micrococcineae. The organism showed the highest levels of sequence similarity with ‘Candidatus Nostocoida limicola’ (96.1 %), Terrabacter tumescens (96.1 %) and Terrabacter terrae (96.0 %). The levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between the isolate and members of other genera of the family Intrasporangiaceae were in the range 92.1–95.5 %. On the basis of the polyphasic evidence, the isolate should be classified within a novel genus and species, for which the name Phycicoccus jejuensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Phycicoccus jejuensis is strain KSW2-15T (=KCCM 42315T=NRRL B-24460T).

A Gram-positive, non-motile, spherical, non-spore-forming bacterial strain, DS-52T, was isolated from soil from Dokdo, Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. It grew optimally at 25 °C and pH 6.0–7.0. Strain DS-52T had meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan, and galactose, mannose, xylose and rhamnose as whole-cell sugars. It contained MK-8(H4) and MK-9(H4) as the predominant menaquinones and anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and C17 : 0 as major fatty acids. Major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidyldimethylethanolamine. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DS-52T is most closely related to the genus Nakamurella of the suborder Frankineae. Strain DS-52T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 96.5 % to Nakamurella multipartita JCM 9543T and 92.0–93.9 % to other members of the suborder Frankineae. The diagnostic diamino acid type and polar lipid profile of strain DS-52T were the same as those of the genus Nakamurella. However, strain DS-52T could be clearly distinguished from the genus Nakamurella by differences in predominant menaquinones, major fatty acids and cell-wall sugars. Accordingly, based on combined phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain DS-52T (=KCTC 19127T=CIP 108919T) is proposed as the type strain of a novel species in a new genus, Humicoccus flavidus gen. nov., sp. nov.

A novel Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacterial strain YN3T was isolated from ripened Pu'er tea. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain belonged to the family Sporolactobacillaceae and was closely related to Pullulanibacillus naganoensis DSM 10191T (95.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Pullulanibacillus uraniitolerans DSM 19429T (95.4 %). Growth of the strain was observed at 20–50 °C (optimum 30–37 °C), at pH 4.0–8.0 (optimum pH 5.0–6.0). The strain had a cell-wall type A1γ peptidoglycan with meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. The predominant menaquinone was menaquinone-7 (MK-7). The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15:0, anteiso-C17:0 and C18:1ω7c. The DNA G+C content of strain YN3T was 38.7 mol%. Strain YN3T could be differentiated from recognized species of the genus Pullulanibacillus based on phenotypic characteristics, chemotaxonomic differences, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA hybridization data. On the basis of polyphasic evidence from this study, Pullulanibacillus pueri sp. nov., is proposed, with strain YN3T ( = CGMCC 1.12777T = JCM 30075T) as the type strain.

A novel actinomycete strain, designated KLBMP 1356T, was isolated from the root of halophyte Tamarix chinensis Lour. collected from the coastal area of Jiangsu province, PR China. The isolate was characterized using a polyphasic approach. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain KLBMP 1356T was phylogenetically related to members of the family Pseudonocardiaceae and formed a distinct monophyletic clade between the genera Amycolatopsis (93.1–94.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Prauserella (93.6–95.1 %) and Saccharomonospora (93.2–94.3 %). The isolate displayed long spore chains containing rod-shaped and smooth-surfaced spores. Strain KLBMP 1356T contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid, and galactose, arabinose and glucose as the whole-cell sugars. The major menaquinone was MK-9(H4) and the fatty acid profile was characterized by the predominance of iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1ω8c, C17 : 1ω6c and C17 : 0. The polar lipids comprised diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, unknown aminophospholipids and an unknown glycolipid. Mycolic acids were not present. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 67.2 mol%. On the basis of the evidence from this polyphasic study, strain KLBMP 1356T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the family Pseudonocardiaceae, for which the name Tamaricihabitans halophyticus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is KLBMP 1356T ( = DSM 45765T = NBRC 109361T).

A mesophilic, endophytic, filamentous bacterium, designated strain NEAU-gxj18T, was isolated from soybean root [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] collected from Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, China and characterized using a polyphasic approach. Growth was observed at 20–40 °C (optimum 37 °C). Aerial mycelium was absent on all the media tested. Substrate mycelia were well-developed and formed abundant single endospores with smooth surfaces. The only menaquinone was MK-7.The diagnostic diamino acid was meso-diaminopimelic acid. The whole-cell sugars were ribose, glucose and galactose. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, C13 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0. The polar lipid profile consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, one unidentified aminophospholipid and one undientified phospholipid. The DNA G+C content was 49.9 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain NEAU-gxj18T was phylogenetically related to members of the family Thermoactinomycetaceae, with the highest sequence similarity to Geothermomicrobium terrae YIM 77562T (93.35 %). On the basis of morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and characteristic patterns of 16S rRNA gene signature nucleotides, strain NEAU-gxj18T represents a novel species of a new genus within the family Thermoactinomycetaceae, for which the name Baia soyae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is NEAU-gxj18T ( = CGMCC 4.7223T = DSM 46831T).

A novel, Gram-stain-positive bacterial strain, Mer 29717T, was isolated from the branchia (gills) of a Japanese codling, Physiculus japonicus, collected from bottom waters of Suruga Bay in Shizuoka, Japan. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that this strain represents a distinct lineage within the family Dermacoccaceae and was related most closely to members of the genera Demetria and Yimella. It shared highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (95.1 %) with Yimella lutea YIM 45900T. Strain Mer 29717T contained MK-8(H2) and MK-8(H4) as menaquinones, and iso-C16 : 0, C16 : 0, C17 : 1 cis-9, C17 : 0, C18 : 1 cis-9 and C19 : 1 cis-10 were the major cellular fatty acids. The cell-wall peptidoglycan of strain Mer 29717T was composed of l-Lys, d-Ser, l-Ser, Gly, d-Glu and d-Ala. Polar lipids were phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and one unidentified phospholipid. Mycolic acids were not detected. The G+C content of the DNA of strain Mer 29717T was 68 mol%. On the basis of differential chemotaxonomic, physiological and biochemical data, strain Mer 29717T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Branchiibius hedensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Branchiibius hedensis is Mer 29717T ( = NBRC 106121T  = DSM 22951T).

Strain M-SA3-94T, an aerobic, Gram-stain-positive, ovoid- to rod-shaped, non-motile bacterium, was isolated from the marine sediment of Ardley cove, King George Island, Antarctica. Strain M-SA3-94T grew optimally at pH 5.0–6.0, 20 °C and in the presence of 1.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis, based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, indicated that strain M-SA3-94T belonged to the genus Nocardioides in the family Nocardioidaceae, clustering with Nocardioides plantarum NCIMB 12834T, Nocardioides ginsengagri BX5-10T, Nocardioides marinquilinus CL-GY44T and Nocardioides lianchengensis D94-1T (with 96.1 %, 95.9 %, 94.5 % and 94.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, respectively). The chemotaxonomic properties of strain M-SA3-94T were similar to those of members of the genus Nocardioides with validly published names. The major fatty acid was iso-C16 : 0. The polar lipid pattern contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and three unknown phospholipids. The diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was ll-2, 6-diaminopimelic acid. MK-8(H4) was the predominant menaquinone and the DNA G+C content of this strain was 66.7 mol%. On the basis of these phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic data, strain M-SA3-94T represents a novel species of the genus Nocardioides, for which the name Nocardioides antarcticus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is M-SA3-94T ( = CCTCC AB2014053T = LMG 28254T).
