An aerobic, Gram-reaction-positive, non-motile, psychrophilic bacterium, designated strain S6-3T, was isolated from alpine soil. Cells exhibited a rod–coccus growth cycle and produced a yellow pigment. Growth occurred at 1–25 °C. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain S6-3T was related to members of the genus Arthrobacter, sharing highest sequence similarities with the type strains of Arthrobacter psychrolactophilus (97.9 %) and Arthrobacter stackebrandtii (97.6 %). Strain S6-3T had MK-9(H2) as the major menaquinone and anteiso-C15 : 0 as the major fatty acid. The cell-wall peptidoglycan was of type A3α l-Lys–l-Thr–Ala3. The predominant cell-wall sugars were galactose and rhamnose. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain S6-3T was 61.9 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA relatedness data, strain S6-3T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Arthrobacter, for which the name Arthrobacter alpinus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S6-3T (=DSM 22274T =CGMCC 1.8950T).

Strain BZ30T was isolated from hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. The Gram-negative, aerobic bacterium was psychrophilic and able to grow at temperatures ranging from 1 to 30 °C. The predominant cellular fatty acids of strain BZ30T were summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) (37.4 %), C18 : 1 ω7c (19.6 %), C16 : 0 (8.2 %), C14 : 0 2-OH (8.0 %) and C16 : 0 2-OH (5.0 %). The predominant ubiquinone was Q-10. Major polar lipids were sphingoglycolipids, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine. Spermidine was the major polyamine. The genomic DNA G+C content was 64.4 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity showed that strain BZ30T belonged to the family Sphingomonadaceae of the α-4 group of the phylum Proteobacteria, and was related to the members of the genus Sphingopyxis, sharing the highest sequence similarities with the type strains of Sphingopyxis chilensis (98.3 %), S. witflariensis (98.2 %), S. taejonensis (97.4 %) and S. ginsengisoli (97.2 %). On the basis of the phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA relatedness data, strain BZ30T represents a novel species of the genus Sphingopyxis, for which the name Sphingopyxis bauzanensis is proposed. The type strain is BZ30T (=DSM 22271T =CGMCC 1.8959T =CIP 110136T).

Two novel Gram-stain-positive bacteria, designated HR08-7T and HR08-43T, were isolated from a sea sediment sample from Rishiri Island, Hokkaido, Japan, and their taxonomic positions were investigated by a polyphasic approach. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons revealed that strains HR08-7T and HR08-43T and the members of the genus Demequina formed a monophyletic cluster with similarity range of 95.5–99.0 %. The peptidoglycan type of strains HR08-7T and HR08-43T was A4β. The predominant menaquinone of both strains was demethylmenaquinone DMK-9(H4) and the major fatty acid was anteiso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C contents of strains HR08-7T and HR08-43T were 64.5 and 62.4 mol%, respectively. The results of phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA hybridization, along with differences of strains HR08-7T and HR08-43T from the recognized Demequina species in phenotypic characteristics, indicate that the two strains merit classification as representatives of two novel species of the genus Demequina , for which the names Demequina flava sp. nov. and Demequina sediminicola sp. nov. are proposed; the type strains are HR08-7T ( = NBRC 105854T = DSM 24865T) and HR08-43T ( = NBRC 105855T = DSM 24867T), respectively.

A Gram-stain-negative, Na+-requiring bacterial strain, designated B20-1T, was isolated from soil of the root system of mangrove forest. Cells were curved rods and motile by means of a polar flagellum. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain B20-1T belonged to the genus Marinomonas , sharing highest sequence similarities with Marinomonas rhizomae IVIA-Po-145T (97.6 %), Marinomonas dokdonensis DSW10-10T (97.0 %) and Marinomonas foliarum IVIA-Po-155T (96.9 %). The predominant cellular fatty acids of strain B20-1T were C10 : 0 3-OH, C18 : 1ω7c, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) and C16 : 0. Phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol were identified as the predominant phospholipids. The predominant ubiquinone was Q-8. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain B20-1T was 46.6 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA relatedness, a novel species, Marinomonas mangrovi sp. nov., is proposed with B20-1T ( = DSM 28136T = LMG 28077T) as the type strain.

A Gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic, motile, spore-forming bacterium, designated Gsoil 1411T, was isolated from soil of a ginseng field in Pocheon Province (South Korea) and was characterized using a polyphasic approach. Comparative analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain Gsoil 1411T belongs to the family Paenibacillaceae, with closest sequence similarity to the type strains of Paenibacillus xylanilyticus (95.7 %), Paenibacillus illinoisensis (95.2 %) and Paenibacillus pabuli (94.8 %). Strain Gsoil 1411T showed less than 94 % sequence similarity to the type strains of other recognized members of the genus Paenibacillus. In addition, the presence of MK-7 as the major menaquinone, anteiso-C15 : 0 as a major fatty acid (44.8 %) and the presence of PAEN513F and PAEN862F signature sequences suggest that it is affiliated to the genus Paenibacillus. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 53.9 mol%. On the basis of its phenotypic characteristics and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain Gsoil 1411T is suggested to represent a novel species within the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus panacisoli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Gsoil 1411T (=KCTC 13020T=LMG 23405T).

Gram-positive, spore-forming rods were isolated from blood cultures of three different patients. Based on phylogenetic analyses, these strains were placed within the Paenibacillus cluster and specific phenotypic characteristics for each strain were described. Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between existing Paenibacillus species and the three novel strains 2301065T, 2301032T and 2301083T were 87·6–94·4, 88·5–95·4 and 87·5–96·0 %, respectively, and anteiso-branched C15 : 0 was the major fatty acid. On the basis of phenotypic data and phylogenetic inference, it is proposed that these strains should be designated Paenibacillus massiliensis sp. nov., Paenibacillus sanguinis sp. nov. and Paenibacillus timonensis sp. nov. The type strains are respectively strain 2301065T (=CIP 107939T=CCUG 48215T), strain 2301083T (=CIP 107938T=CCUG 48214T) and strain 2301032T (=CIP 108005T=CCUG 48216T).

A rod-shaped Gram-staining-negative, non-motile, aerobic and fucoidan-digesting strain, designated TC2T, was isolated from marine algae collected from the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk at Abashiri, Hokkaido, Japan. The bacterium formed yellow, translucent, circular and convex colonies. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that the strain belonged to the genus Flavobacterium, with the highest sequence similarities of 97.1 to 97.3 % to the type strains of Flavobacterium frigidarium, Flavobacterium frigoris, Flavobacterium limicola and Flavobacterium psychrolimnae. DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain TC2T and the above-mentioned species were lower than 28 %. The genomic DNA G+C content was 33.9 mol%. The major respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6 and the predominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (which comprises iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1 ω7c). Strain TC2T could be differentiated from related species by several phenotypic characteristics. Thus, on the basis of these results, strain TC2T represents a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium, for which the name Flavobacterium algicola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TC2T (=NBRC 102673T =CIP 109574T).

A non-motile, rod-shaped, red-pigmented bacterium, designated strain BZ33rT, was isolated from soil of an industrial site. Cells stained Gram-negative and were aerobic and psychrophilic, showing good growth at 1–20 °C. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BZ33rT was related to members of the genus Hymenobacter and had highest sequence similarity with Hymenobacter aerophilus DSM 13606T (97.5 %). The predominant cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (20.3 %), summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH; 20.2 %), iso-C15 : 0 (20.0 %), summed feature 4 (iso-C17 : 1 I and/or anteiso-C17 : 1 B; 8.2 %) and C16 : 1ω5c (7.9 %). Strain BZ33rT had MK-7 as the major menaquinone. The polyamine pattern contained sym-homospermidine as the major compound with moderate amounts of spermidine. Phosphatidylethanolamine, three unknown aminophospholipids, two unknown aminolipids, two unknown glycolipids and five unknown polar lipids were present in the polar lipid profile. The G+C content of the DNA was 61.6 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA relatedness data, strain BZ33rT is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Hymenobacter, for which the name Hymenobacter psychrophilus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BZ33rT ( = DSM 22290T  = CGMCC 1.8975T  = LMG 25548T).

A novel Gram-stain-positive, slightly halophilic, facultatively alkaliphilic, catalase-positive, oxidase-negative, endospore-forming, motile, rod-shaped, aerobic bacterium, designated strain JSM 082006T, was isolated from an oyster collected from Naozhou Island in the South China Sea. The isolate grew in 0–18 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0.5–4.0 %), at pH 6.0–10.5 (optimum, pH 8.0) and at 15–45 °C (optimum, 30 °C). meso-Diaminopimelic acid was present in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 0. Strain JSM 082006T contained MK-7 as the predominant respiratory quinone and diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine as the major polar lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 40.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons revealed that strain JSM 082006T should be assigned to the genus Bacillus and that it was most closely related to the type strains of Bacillus barbaricus (sequence similarity 99.1 %) and Bacillus arsenicus (97.5 %), followed by those of Bacillus rigui (96.6 %) and Bacillus solisalsi (96.1 %). Phylogenetic analysis, DNA–DNA relatedness values, phenotypic characteristics and chemotaxonomic data support the view that strain JSM 082006T represents a novel species of the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus nanhaiensis sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is JSM 082006T ( = DSM 23009T  = KCTC 13712T).

Three novel Gram-stain-positive bacteria, designated IY07-20T, IY07-56T and IY07-113, were isolated from soil samples from Iriomote Island, Okinawa, Japan, and their taxonomic positions were investigated by a polyphasic approach. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons showed that the three isolates were closely related to the members of the genus Agromyces , with similarity range of 95.6–98.7 %. The isolates contained l-2,4-diaminobutylic acid, d-alanine, d-glutamic acid and glycine in their peptidoglycans. The predominant menaquinone was MK-12 and the major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The DNA G+C contents were 70.9–72.9 mol%. The chemotaxonomic characteristics of the isolates matched those described for members of the genus Agromyces . The results of phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA hybridization, along with differences in phenotypic characteristics between strains IY07-20T, IY07-56T and IY07-113 and the species of the genus Agromyces with validly published names, indicate that the three isolates merit classification as representatives of two novel species of the genus Agromyces , for which the names Agromyces iriomotensis sp. nov. and Agromyces subtropica sp. nov. are proposed; the type strains are IY07-20T ( = NBRC 106452T = DSM 26155T) and IY07-56T ( = NBRC 106454T = DSM 26153T), respectively.

Abstract A novel Gram-stain positive, oval shaped and non-flagellated bacterium, designated YIM S02566T, was isolated from alpine soil in Shadui Towns, Ganzi County, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, PR China. Growth occurred at 23–35°C (optimum, 30°C) in the presence of 0.5-4 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 1%) and at pH 7.0–8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0). The phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain YIM S02566T was most closely related to the genus Aestuariimicrobium, with Aestuariimicrobium kwangyangense R27T and Aestuariimicrobium soli D6T as its closest relative (sequence similarities were 96.3% and 95.4%, respectively). YIM S02566T contained LL-diaminopimelic acid in the cell wall. MK-9(H4) was the predominant menaquinone. The major fatty acid patterns were anteiso-C15:0 (60.0%). The major polar lipid was DPG. The genome size of strain YIM S02566T was 3.1 Mb, comprising 3078 predicted genes with a DNA G + C content of 69.0 mol%. Based on these genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic evidences, strain YIM S02566T was identified as a novel species in the genus Aestuariimicrobium, for which the name Aestuariimicrobium ganziense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YIM S02566T (= CGMCC 1.18751 T =KCTC 49477 T).
