Two Gram-stain-positive strains, WPCB074T and WPCB165, were isolated from fresh water collected from the Woopo wetland (Republic of Korea). Both strains were strictly aerobic, motile, endospore-forming rods. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strains WPCB074T and WPCB165 belonged to the genus Bacillus and that strain WPCB074T was most closely related to Bacillus solisalsi YC1T (98.4 % sequence similarity), B. barbaricus V2-BIII-A2T (97.7 %), B. macauensis ZFHKF-1T (96.9 %), B. arsenicus Con a/3T (96.4 %) and B. gelatini LMG 21880T (95.1 %). The 16S rRNA gene sequences of strains WPCB074T and WPCB165 differed at one position (99.9 % similarity), suggesting that these two strains constitute a single species. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain WPCB074T and the type strains of B. solisalsi, B. barbaricus, B. macauensis, B. arsenicus and B. gelatini were 26, 17, 20, 14 and 7 %, respectively. Strain WPCB074T was characterized by having cell-wall peptidoglycan based on meso-diaminopimelic acid, MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0 as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content of strain WPCB074T was 41.9 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic properties, phylogeny and genomic distinctiveness, strain WPCB074T represents a novel species of the genus Bacillus for which the name Bacillus rigui sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is WPCB074T (=KCTC 13278T =JCM 16348T).

Three Gram-positive, rod- or coccoid-shaped bacterial strains, KSL-2T, KSL-5 and KSL-6, were isolated from an alkaline soil in Korea and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomical analysis. These isolates grew optimally at pH 9·0 and 30 °C. They were characterized chemotaxonomically as having cell wall peptidoglycan based on ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid, MK-8(H4) as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C16 : 0 as the major fatty acid. The DNA G+C content of the isolates was 73–74 mol%. Strains KSL-2T, KSL-5 and KSL-6 were identical in their 16S rRNA gene sequences and exhibited DNA–DNA relatedness values of 88–93 %. Phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the three isolates fell within the evolutionary radiation encompassed by the genus Nocardioides. Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between the three strains and the type strains of Nocardioides species ranged from 93·6 % (with Nocardioides albus) to 97·2 % (with Nocardioides aquiterrae). DNA–DNA relatedness levels between the three isolates and N. aquiterrae CJ-14T were 8–15 %. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genetic data, strains KSL-2T, KSL-5 and KSL-6 were classified in the genus Nocardioides as members of a novel species for which the name Nocardioides kribbensis sp. nov. is proposed, with KSL-2T (=KCTC 19038T=DSM 16314T) as the type strain.

A novel aerobic actinomycete, designated strain I12A-02601T, was isolated from a desert soil crusts sample collected from the Shapotou region of Tengger Desert, north-west China. The substrate mycelia of this isolate were well-developed and branched, but not fragmented. The maturity aerial mycelia formed short chains of small, rod-shaped spores. The strain contained ll-diaminopimelic acid, dd-diaminopimelic acid, galactose, glucose, ribose and xylose in its whole-cell hydrolysates. The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, N-acetylglucosamine-containing phospholipids, phosphatidylinositolmannoside and glycolipids. The predominant menaquinones were MK-10(H6) and MK-10(H8). The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 72.2 mol%. The 16S rRNA gene sequences comparison showed that strain I12A-02601T was most closely related to members of the family Nocardioidaceae, such as Actinopolymorpha alba YIM 48868T (93.3 % sequence similarity), Actinopolymorpha pittospori PIP 143T (93.2 %), and Flindersiella endophytica EUM 378T (93.2 %). In the phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain I12A-02601T formed a clade with the members of the genera Flindersiella, Thermasporomyces, and Actinopolymorpha in the family Nocardioidaceae. Combined data from this taxonomic study using a polyphasic approach, led to the conclusion that strain I12A-02601T represents a novel species of a new genus in the family Nocardioidaceae, for which the name Tenggerimyces mesophilus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is I12A-02601T ( = CPCC 203544T = DSM 45829T = NBRC 109454T).

© 2017 IUMS. A novel anaerobic pectinolytic bacterium (strain 14T) was isolated from human faeces. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain 14T belonged to the family Ruminococcaceae, but was located separately from known clostridial clusters within the taxon. The closest cultured relative of strain 14T was Acetivibrio cellulolyticus (89.7% sequence similarity). Strain 14T shared ~99% sequence similarity with cloned 16S rRNA gene sequences from uncultured bacteria derived from the human gut. Cells were Gram-stain-positive, non-motile cocci approximately 0.6μm in diameter. Strain 14T fermented pectins from citrus peel, apple, and kiwifruit as well as carbohydrates that are constituents of pectins and hemicellulose, such as galacturonic acid, xylose, and arabinose. TEM images of strain 14T, cultured in association with plant tissues, suggested extracellular fibrolytic activity associated with the bacterial cells, forming zones of degradation in the pectin-rich regions of middle lamella. Phylogenetic and phenotypic analysis supported the differentiation of strain 14T as a novel genus in the family Ruminococcaceae. The name Monoglobus pectinilyticus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is 14T (JCM 31914T=DSM 104782T).

Strain B538T is a Gram-positive, motile, rod-shaped bacterium, which was isolated from Xinjiang province in China. This organism grew optimally at 30–35 °C and pH 8.0–8.5. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain B538T belonged to the genus Paenibacillus and chemotaxonomic data (DNA G+C content, 47.0 mol%; major isoprenoid quinone, MK-7; cell wall type, A1γ meso-diaminopimelic acid; major fatty acids, anteiso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 0) supported affiliation of the isolate with the genus Paenibacillus. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses showed that the isolate was most closely related to Paenibacillus glycanilyticus DS-1T, with 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 98.1 %; sequence similarities to other members of the genus Paenibacillus used in the phylogenetic tree were less than 96.5 %. The DNA–DNA relatedness between strain B538T and P. glycanilyticus DS-1T was about 8.0 %. On the basis of physiological and molecular properties, strain B538T (=KCTC 3952T=DSM 16970T) is proposed as the type strain of a novel species within the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus xinjiangensis sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-positive, aerobic, actinobacterial strain with rod-shaped spores, designated YIM 63158T, was isolated from the surface-sterilized roots of Artemisia annua L. collected from Yunnan province, south-west China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain YIM 63158T belonged to the genus Pseudonocardia. The closest neighbours were ‘Pseudonocardia sichuanensis’ KLBMP 1115 (99.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Pseudonocardia adelaidensis EUM 221T (99.1 %) and Pseudonocardia zijingensis DSM 44774T (98.8 %); sequence similarities to other members of the genus Pseudonocardia ranged from 98.6 to 94.4 %. The chemotaxonomic characteristics, such as the cell-wall diaminopimelic acid, whole-cell sugars, fatty acid components and major menaquinones, suggested that the isolate belonged to the genus Pseudonocardia. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 73.3 mol%. On the basis of physiological, biochemical and chemotaxonomic data, including low DNA–DNA relatedness between the isolate and other members of the genus Pseudonocardia, it is proposed that strain YIM 63158T represents a novel species in this genus, with the name Pseudonocardia kunmingensis sp. nov. The type strain is YIM 63158T ( = DSM 45301T  = CCTCC AA 208081T).

A Gram-negative, non-sporulating, non-flagellated rod, designated BR-9T, was isolated from soil collected on the Korean peninsula. Strain BR-9T grew optimally at pH 6.0–7.0, at 30 °C and in the absence of NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain BR-9T belonged to the genus Pedobacter and clustered with Pedobacter insulae DS-139T and Pedobacter koreensis WPCB189T. Strain BR-9T exhibited 98.2 and 97.5 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with P. insulae DS-139T and P. koreensis WPCB189T, respectively, and <96.7 % sequence similarity with the type strains of other species in the genus Pedobacter. Strain BR-9T contained MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content of strain BR-9T was 38.5 mol%. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain BR-9T and P. insulae DS-139T and P. koreensis KCTC 12536T was 3.4–4.2 %, which indicated that the isolate was genetically distinct from these type strains. Strain BR-9T was also distinguishable by differences in phenotypic properties. On the basis of the data presented, strain BR-9T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Pedobacter, for which the name Pedobacter boryungensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BR-9T ( = KCTC 23344T  = CCUG 60024T).

A Gram-staining-negative, yellow-coloured, strictly aerobic, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium, designated HS39T, isolated from a soil sample collected from a natural Populus euphratica forest in Xinjiang, China, was characterized using a polyphasic approach. The isolate grew optimally at 30–37 °C, at pH 6.5–8.0 and with 0–3 % NaCl. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain HS39T revealed that it is a member of the genus Sphingobacterium. Sphingobacterium mizutaii ATCC 33299T was the nearest relative (94.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 40.2 mol%. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1 ω6c and/or C16 : 1 ω7c). The predominant isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. On the basis of phenotypic properties and phylogenetic inference, strain HS39T represents a novel species of the genus Sphingobacterium, for which the name Sphingobacterium shayense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HS39T (=CCTCC AB 209006T =NRRL B-59203T).

A Gram-negative-staining, non-motile and rod-shaped bacterial strain, HD-28T, was isolated from a tidal flat of the Yellow Sea, Korea. Strain HD-28T grew optimally at pH 7.0–8.0 and 30 °C in the presence of 2–3 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain HD-28T was most closely related to species of the genus Ruegeria and exhibited 95.5–96.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the type strains of Ruegeria species. A neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree based on gyrB gene sequences also showed that strain HD-28T fell within the cluster comprising recognized species of the genus Ruegeria, showing 77.5–83.9 % sequence similarity. Strain HD-28T contained Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and C18 : 1ω7c as the major fatty acid. The major polar lipids detected in strain HD-28T were phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified aminolipid and two unidentified lipids. The DNA G+C content was 57.9 mol%. Differential phenotypic properties, together with phylogenetic distinctiveness, demonstrated that strain HD-28T could be distinguished from recognized species of the genus Ruegeria. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain HD-28T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Ruegeria, for which the name Ruegeria faecimaris sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HD-28T ( = KCTC 23044T = CCUG 58878T).

A Gram-stain-positive, motile, rod-shaped bacterial strain, ISL-17T, was isolated from a marine solar saltern of the Yellow Sea, Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated by means of a polyphasic study. Strain ISL-17T grew optimally at pH 8.5–9.0, at 37 °C and in the presence of approximately 10 % (w/v) NaCl. It contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid in the peptidoglycan, MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 48.1 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain ISL-17T fell within the genus Alkalibacillus, clustering with Alkalibacillus salilacus BH163T with a bootstrap resampling value of 100 %. Strain ISL-17T exhibited 98.2 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to A. salilacus BH163T and 95.8–96.5 % similarity to the type strains of the other Alkalibacillus species. The mean DNA–DNA relatedness value between strain ISL-17T and A. salilacus KCTC 3916T was 19 %. The phenotypic properties of strain ISL-17T, together with its phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, enable this strain to be differentiated from recognized Alkalibacillus species. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genetic data, strain ISL-17T represents a novel species within the genus Alkalibacillus, for which the name Alkalibacillus flavidus sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is ISL-17T (=KCTC 13258T =CCUG 56753T).

A water sample from the North Sea was used to isolate the abundant heterotrophic bacteria that are able to grow on complex marine media. Isolation was by serial dilution and spread plating. Phylogenetic analysis of nearly complete 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that one of the strains, HEL-45T, had 97·4 % sequence similarity to Sulfitobacter mediterraneus and 96·5 % sequence similarity to Staleya guttiformis. Strain HEL-45T is a Gram-negative, non-motile rod and obligate aerobe and requires sodium and 1–7 % sea salts for growth. It contains storage granules and does not produce bacteriochlorophyll. Optimal growth temperatures are 25–30 °C. The DNA base composition (G+C content) is 60·1 mol%. Strain HEL-45T has Q10 as the dominant respiratory quinone. The major polar lipids are phosphatidyl glycerol, diphosphatidyl glycerol, phosphatidyl choline, phosphatidyl ethanolamine and an aminolipid. The fatty acids comprise 18 : 1ω7c, 18 : 0, 16 : 1ω7c, 16 : 0, 3-OH 10 : 0, 3-OH 12 : 1 (or 3-oxo 12 : 0) and traces of an 18 : 2 fatty acid. Among the hydroxylated fatty acids only 3-OH 12 : 1 (or 3-oxo 12 : 0) appears to be amide linked, whereas 3-OH 10 : 0 appears to be ester linked. The minor fatty acid components (between 1 and 7 %) allow three subgroups to be distinguished in the Sulfitobacter/Staleya clade, placing HEL-45T into a separate lineage characterized by the presence of 3-OH 12 : 1 (or 3-oxo 12 : 0) and both ester- and amide-linked 16 : 1ω7c phospholipids. HEL-45T produces indole and derivatives thereof, several cyclic dipeptides and thryptanthrin. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences and chemotaxonomic data support the description of a new genus and species, to include Oceanibulbus indolifex gen. nov., sp. nov., with the type strain HEL-45T (=DSM 14862T=NCIMB 13983T).
