A Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, yellow-pigmented bacterium, strain LQY-7T, was isolated from activated sludge treating synthetic pyrethroid-manufacturing wastewater. The taxonomic status of the strain was determined using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain LQY-7T was a member of the genus Flavobacterium but had low similarities with other species of this genus (95.0 % similarity with Flavobacterium indicum GPTSA100-9T and <94 % similarities with other Flavobacterium species). On the basis of phenotypic, genetic and phylogenetic data, strain LQY-7T should be classified as a representative of a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium, for which the name Flavobacterium haoranii sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is LQY-7T (=ACCC 05409T =KCTC 23008T).

A novel strain, designated 311-10T, isolated from soil of Xinjiang, China, was characterized by using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The isolate was Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, non-motile, oxidase-negative and catalase-positive. The predominant menaquinone of strain 311-10T was MK-7 and the genomic DNA G+C content was 47.8 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolate formed a cluster with the genera Pontibacter and [Effluviibacter] in the phylum ‘Bacteroidetes’, with sequence similarities of 93.9–95.6 %. Phylogenetic evidence and the results of phenotypic, genotypic and chemotaxonomic analyses support the reclassification of [Effluviibacter] roseus as Pontibacter roseus comb. nov. (type strain, SRC-1T=MTCC 7260T=DSM 17521T) and the establishment of a novel species, Pontibacter xinjiangensis sp. nov., with strain 311-10T (=CCTCC AB 207200T=NRRL B-51335T) as the type strain.

A novel, non-pigmented, rod-shaped, Gram-negative strain was isolated from mesotrophic lake water in Zealand, Denmark. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the bacterium, designated strain 389T, indicated that the strain belonged to the genus Vogesella and formed a monophyletic group with Vogesella perlucida DS-28T (99.1 % nucleotide similarity); it was less related to Vogesella indigofera ATCC 19706T (96.9 % similarity) and Vogesella lacus LMG 24504T (96.8 % similarity). Hybridization of DNA from strain 389T and V. perlucida demonstrated a reassociation of 50.6±9.6 %. The DNA G+C content of strain 389T was 61.2 mol%. The fatty acid profile of the strain differed from those of the other strains representing the genus Vogesella by a high content of C16 : 1 ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH (71.6 %) and a lower content of C16 : 0. Strain 389T was capable of degrading peptidoglycan and had chitinase and lysozyme activities, possibly associated with the degradation of peptidoglycan, and had capacity for degradation of several other polymer compounds. Based on phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, strain 389T represents a novel species, for which we propose the name Vogesella mureinivorans sp. nov. The type strain is 389T (=DSM 21247T =LMG 25302T).

A Gram-negative, motile and egg-shaped bacterium, strain TF-218T, was isolated from a tidal flat at Daepo Beach (Yellow Sea), Korea, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic analysis. Strain TF-218T grew optimally at pH 7.0–8.0 and 37 °C in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. It contained Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and C18 : 1 ω7c and 11-methyl C18 : 1 ω7c as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified lipids and an aminolipid. The DNA G+C content was 64.9 mol%. A neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain TF-218T is phylogenetically closely related to the genera Phaeobacter, Leisingera and Marinovum of the Alphaproteobacteria. The phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic similarities suggest that strain TF-218T represents a member of the genus Phaeobacter. DNA–DNA relatedness data and differential phenotypic properties, together with the phylogenetic distinctiveness, demonstrated that strain TF-218T differs from the recognized Phaeobacter species. On the basis of the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain TF-218T represents a novel species of the genus Phaeobacter, for which the name Phaeobacter daeponensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TF-218T (=KCTC 12794T=JCM 13606T).
