Acidophilic actinomycete strains that represent the two major neutrotolerant clusters defined by numerical taxonomy (Seong, 1992) were the subject of a polyphasic taxonomic study. The centrotypes of each cluster, designated as strain JL164 (=KCTC 9924) of cluster 21 and strain CN732T (=KCTC 9926T=IMSNU 50114T=NRRL B-24245T) of cluster 13, were assigned initially to the genus Streptomyces on the basis of morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics; this assignation was confirmed by 16S rRNA gene sequence data. Strain CN732T formed a distinct phyletic line within the Streptomyces tree, whereas strain JL164 was related closely to the type strain of Streptomyces mirabilis. It is evident from the present and previous studies that neutrotolerant acidophilic actinomycetes comprise taxonomically diverse groups within the variation encompassed by the genus Streptomyces. It is also apparent that strain CN732T and other members of cluster 13 merit recognition as a novel species, for which the name Streptomyces yeochonensis sp. nov. is proposed.

A taxonomic study was performed on strain D7015T, which was isolated from coastal sediment close to a coal-fired power station in Qingdao, China. Cells of strain D7015T were Gram-positive, non-motile, diphtheroid rods that grew in the presence of 0–8 % (w/v) NaCl and at 4–37 °C, with optimum growth at 1 % (w/v) NaCl and 30–32 °C. The DNA G+C content was 65.0 mol%. The major fatty acids were C18 : 1 ω9c (56.18 %), C16 : 0 (38.02 %), C16 : 1 ω7c (4.45 %), C18 : 0 (1.0 %) and C14 : 0 (0.35 %). On the basis of morphological, physiological and phylogenetic characteristics, strain D7015T was classified in the genus Corynebacterium. It exhibited a 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 95.9 % and a DNA–DNA relatedness value of 20.4 % with Corynebacterium halotolerans DSM 44683T. Strain D7015T was sufficiently different from recognized species of the genus Corynebacterium to be considered to represent a novel species. The name Corynebacterium marinum sp. nov. is proposed, with strain D7015T (=CGMCC 1.6998T=NRRL B-24779T) as the type strain.

An actinomycete, designated strain E71T, was isolated from the stem of Sambucus adnata Wall, a Chinese medicinal plant, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that the organism was a member of the genus Glycomyces, and formed a distinct phyletic line distantly related to recognized species of the genus Glycomyces. Morphological and chemotaxonomic data supported the affiliation of strain E71T to the genus Glycomyces. A number of physiological properties and a unique menaquinone profile allowed differentiation of the strain from related Glycomyces species. It is therefore proposed that strain E71T represents a novel species of the genus Glycomyces, for which the name Glycomyces sambucus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is E71T (=CGMCC 4.3147T=DSM 45047T).

Strain CCM 2783, previously classified as representing Arthrobacter aurescens, was subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and chemotaxonomic characteristics such as peptidoglycan type A3α Lys–Ala2, major menaquinone MK-9(H2) and fatty acid composition confirmed assignment of the strain to the genus Arthrobacter. The results of phylogenetic analysis, DNA–DNA relatedness experiments and physiological and chemotaxonomic characteristics indicate that CCM 2783 differs from its nearest phylogenetic relative Arthrobacter psychrolactophilus and from other recognized Arthrobacter species. Therefore, a novel species, Arthrobacter stackebrandtii sp. nov., is proposed with the type strain CCM 2783T (=DSM 16005T).

In order to clarify the taxonomic position of an actinobacterium from the Roman catacomb of Domitilla, a combination of phenotypic characterization, phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence and DNA–DNA relatedness studies was used. The results from the polyphasic taxonomic study of this organism showed that strain HKI 0342T (=DSM 16849T=NCIMB 14033T) should be considered as the type strain of a novel species of the genus Isoptericola, for which the name Isoptericola hypogeus sp. nov. is proposed.

Three indigo-reducing obligately alkaliphilic strains, M3T, 41A and 41C, were isolated. The isolates grew at pH 9–12, but not at pH 7–8. They were Gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic, straight rod-shaped strains with peritrichous flagella. The isolates grew in 0–14 % (w/v) NaCl, with optimum growth at 3–13 %. They grew at temperatures between 10 and 45 °C, with optimum growth at around 30–37 °C. They did not hydrolyse starch or gelatin. dl-lactate was the major end-product from d-glucose. No quinones could be detected. The peptidoglycan type was A4β, Orn–d-Asp. The major cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0, C16 : 17c and C18 : 19c. The DNA G+C content was 42·6–43·2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence data indicated that the isolates belong to the genus Alkalibacterium. DNA–DNA hybridization revealed low similarity (less than 16 %) of the isolates with respect to the two closest phylogenetically related strains, Alkalibacterium olivapovliticus and Alkalibacterium psychrotolerans. On the basis of phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, phylogenetic data and DNA–DNA relatedness, the isolates merit classification as a novel species of the genus Alkalibacterium, for which the name Alkalibacterium iburiense is proposed. The type strain is M3T (=JCM 12662T=NCIMB 14024T).

A Gram-stain-positive, endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium, designated XJ259T, was isolated from a cold spring sample from Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. The isolate grew optimally at 20–30 °C and pH 7.3–7.8. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that isolate XJ259T belonged phylogenetically to the genus Paenibacillus, and was most closely related to Paenibacillus xinjiangensis B538T (with 96.6 % sequence similarity), Paenibacillus glycanilyticus DS-1T (96.3 %) and Paenibacillus castaneae Ch-32T (96.1 %), sharing less than 96.0 % sequence similarity with all other members of the genus Paenibacillus. Chemotaxonomic analysis revealing menaquinone-7 (MK-7) as the major isoprenoid quinone, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and two unknown phosphoglycolipids as the major cellular polar lipids, a DNA G+C content of 47.0 mol%, and anteiso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids supported affiliation of the new isolate to the genus Paenibacillus. Based on these data, isolate XJ259T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus algorifonticola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is XJ259T ( = CGMCC 1.10223T  = JCM 16598T).

Two Gram-stain-positive bacterial isolates, strain 2385/12T and strain 2673/12T were isolated from a tapir and a dog's nose, respectively. The two strains were rod to coccoid-shaped, catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. The highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity identified Corynebacterium singulare CCUG 37330T (96.3 % similarity) as the nearest relative of strain 2385/12T and suggested the isolate represented a novel species. Corynebacterium humireducens DSM 45392T (98.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) was identified as the nearest relative of strain 2673/12T. Results from DNA–DNA hybridization with the type strain of C. humireducens demonstrated that strain 2673/12T also represented a novel species. Strain 2385/12T showed a quinone system consisting predominantly of menaquinones MK-8(H2) and MK-9(H2) whereas strain 2673/12T contained only MK-8(H2) as predominant quinone. The polar lipid profiles of the two strains showed the major compounds phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified glycolipid. Phosphatidylinositol was identified as another major lipid in 2673/12T whereas it was only found in moderate amounts in strain 2385/12T. Furthermore, moderate to minor amounts of phosphatidylinositol-mannoside, β-gentiobiosyl diacylglycerol and variable counts of several unidentified lipids were detected in the two strains. Both strains contained corynemycolic acids. The polyamine patterns were characterized by the major compound putrescine in strain 2385/12T and spermidine in strain 2673/12T. In the fatty acid profiles, predominantly C18 : 1ω9c and C16 : 0 were detected. The two strains are distinguishable from each other and the nearest related established species of the genus Corynebacterium phylogenetically and phenotypically. In conclusion, two novel species of the genus Corynebacterium are proposed, namely Corynebacterium tapiri sp. nov. (type strain, 2385/12T = CCUG 65456T = LMG 28165T) and Corynebacterium nasicanis sp. nov. (type strain, 2673/12T = CCUG 65455T = LMG 28166T).

Two Gram-negative, vibrioid, phototrophic, purple non-sulfur strains, JA131T and JA135T, were isolated from marine habitats. Strain JA131T is non-motile but strain JA135T is motile by means of a pair of monopolar flagella. Both strains have an obligate requirement for NaCl for growth. The intracellular photosynthetic membranes of the two novel strains are of the vesicular type. Bacteriochlorophyll a and probably rhodovibrine are present as photosynthetic pigments. Niacin, thiamine and p-aminobenzoic acid are required as growth factors for both novel strains. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, morphological and physiological characteristics, strains JA131T and JA135T are significantly different from each other and from other species of the genus Roseospira and thus represent two novel species for which the names Roseospira visakhapatnamensis sp. nov. and Roseospira goensis sp. nov. are proposed, respectively. The type strain of Roseospira visakhapatnamensis sp. nov. is JA131T (=ATCC BAA-1365T=JCM 14190T) and the type strain of Roseospira goensis sp. nov. is JA135T (=ATCC BAA-1364T=JCM 14191T).

A Gram-reaction-positive, rod-shaped, spore-forming bacterium, designated Gsoil 1105T, was isolated from soil of a ginseng field in Pocheon Province in South Korea and characterized in order to determine its taxonomic position. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that the isolate belongs to the order Bacillales, showing the highest level of sequence similarity with respect to Tumebacillus permanentifrigoris Eur1 9.5T (94.6 %). The phylogenetic distances from other described species with validly published names within the order Bacillales were greater than 9.0 %. Strain Gsoil 1105T had a genomic DNA G+C content of 55.6 mol% and menaquinone 7 (MK-7) as the major respiratory quinone. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. On the basis of its phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain Gsoil 1105T represents a novel species of the genus Tumebacillus, for which the name Tumebacillus ginsengisoli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Gsoil 1105T ( = KCTC 13942T  = DSM 18389T).

A Gram-positive, aerobic, non-motile and coccoid actinobacterium, designated P31T, was isolated from a traditional, fermented seafood. The strain was catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. Cells grew in the presence of 0–15.0 % (w/v) NaCl, and at pH 5–10 and 15–37 °C. Major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. Strain P31T contained MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone. The DNA G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain P31T was 65.2 mol%. A phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain P31T was most closely related to Kocuria kristinae DSM 20032T, with 96.9 % similarity, and these two strains clustered together in constructed phylogenetic trees. The DNA–DNA hybridization value between strain P31T and K. kristinae DSM 20032T was 21.1 %. On the basis of the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, it is suggested that strain P31T represents a novel species of the genus Kocuria, for which the name Kocuria koreensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is P31T (=KCTC 19595T=JCM 15915T).
