The taxonomic position of two soil actinomycetes, strains A2012T and A2019T, isolated from Turkish soils, was determined using a polyphasic approach. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the strains belonged to the family Nocardiaceae . Strains A2012T and A2019T were most closely related to Nocardia caishijiensis DSM 44831T (98.9 %) and Nocardia mexicana CIP 108295T (98.6 %), respectively; similarity to other type strains of the genus Nocardia ranged from 96.9 to 97.9 %. However, DNA–DNA relatedness and phenotypic data demonstrated that strains A2012T and A2019T could be clearly distinguished from members of the most closely related Nocardia species. It is evident from the genotypic and phenotypic data that the two isolates represent two novel species of the genus Nocardia . It is proposed, therefore, that strains A2012T and A2019T be classified in the genus Nocardia as representatives of Nocardia goodfellowii sp. nov. (type strain A2012T = DSM 45516T = NRRL B-24833T = KCTC 19986T) and Nocardia thraciensis sp. nov. (type strain A2019T = DSM 45517T = NRRL B-24834T = KCTC 19985T), respectively.

A novel Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile, non-sporulating bacterium, designated strain K1T, was isolated from an estuarine water sample collected from Kochi, Kerala, India. Colonies on marine agar were circular, 2.0–2.5 mm in diameter, shiny, yellow, translucent and convex with entire margins. Strain K1T was negative for ornithine decarboxylase, lysine decarboxylase, nitrate reduction and H2S production. The fatty acids were dominated by iso-branched components with a high abundance of iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH; MK-6 (64 %) and MK-7 (34 %) were found as major respiratory quinones; and phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids, four unidentified phospholipids and two unidentified lipids were major polar lipids. The DNA G+C content of strain K1T was 46.1 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain K1T was related most closely to the type strain of Zhouia amylolytica (pairwise sequence similarity of 93.0 %). Phylogenetic analysis showed that strain K1T formed a distinct branch within the family Flavobacteriaceae and clustered with the clade comprising species of the genera Zhouia , Coenonia and Capnocytophaga , being phylogenetically most closely related to the type strain of Zhouia amylolytica at a distance of 9.2 % (90.8 % similarity). Other species of the genera within the same clade were related to strain K1T at distances of 15.0–23.1 %. Based on phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics and on phylogenetic inference, strain K1T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Imtechella halotolerans gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Imtechella halotolerans is K1T ( = MTCC 11055T = JCM 17677T).

‘Bacillus macroides’ ATCC 12905T ( = DSM 54T = LMG 18474T), isolated in 1947 from cow dung, was not included in the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names and so it lost standing in bacteriological nomenclature. Reinvestigation of the strain, including DNA–DNA relatedness experiments, revealed that ‘Bacillus macroides’ is genomically distinct from its closest relatives Lysinibacillus xylanilyticus , Lysinibacillus boronitolerans and Lysinibacillus fusiformis (as determined by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, with pairwise similarity values of 99.2, 98.8 and 98.5 %, respectively, with the type strains of these species). Further analysis showed that ‘Bacillus macroides’ shares the A4α l-Lys–d-Asp peptidoglycan type with other members of the genus Lysinibacillus and can thus be attributed to this genus. These results, combined with additional phenotypic data, justify the description of strain LMG 18474T ( = DSM 54T = ATCC 12905T) as Lysinibacillus macroides sp. nov., nom. rev.

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-motile and rod-shaped marine bacterium, CW2-9T, was isolated from algae collected from Fujian Province in PR China. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that this strain was affiliated with the genus Tamlana in the family Flavobacteriaceae of the class Flavobacteriia and was very similar to the type strain Tamlana sedimentorum MCCC 1A10799T (96.3 % sequence similarity). The whole genome of strain CW2-9T comprised 3 997 513 bp with a G+C content of 34.3 mol%. The average nucleotide identity value between strain CW2-9T and T. sedimentorum MCCC 1A10799T was 73.8 %. Growth was observed from 15 to 40 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH from pH 5.0 to 10.0 (pH 8.0) and in the presence of 0–4 % (w/v) NaCl (0–1 %). The major fatty acids (>10 % of the total) were iso-C15 : 0, iso G-C15 : 1, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and anteiso-C15 : 0. The predominant menaquinone was MK-6. The combined phylogenetic, physiological and chemotaxonomic data indicate that strain CW2-9T represents a novel species in the genus Tamlana , for which the name Tamlana fucoidanivorans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CW2-9T (=CICC 24749T=KCTC 72389T).

A Gram-reaction-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile, red-pigmented bacterial strain, designated ZLD-7T, was isolated from a soil sample collected from an arid area in Xinjiang Province in north-west China, and characterized by using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain ZLD-7T was a member of the genus Pontibacter in the family Cytophagaceae , with sequence similarities of 93.7–96.2 % to type strains of other Pontibacter species. The only isoprenoid quinone of strain ZLD-7T was MK-7, and its major cellular fatty acids were summed feature 4 (anteiso-C17 : 1 B and/or iso-C17 : 1 I), iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c). The polar lipid profile consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminolipid and four unidentified polar lipids. The DNA G+C content was 47.8 mol%. On the basis of the evidence presented, it is proposed that strain ZLD-7T represents a novel species of the genus Pontibacter , for which the name Pontibacter toksunensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is ZLD-7T ( = CCTCC AB 208003T = KCTC 23984T). Emended descriptions of Pontibacter roseus and Pontibacter akesuensis are also proposed.

An actinomycete, designated SA181T, was isolated from Saharan soil in the Hoggar region (south Algeria) and was characterized taxonomically by using a polyphasic approach. The morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics of the isolate were consistent with the genus Saccharothrix , and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis confirmed that strain SA181T was a novel member of the genus Saccharothrix . DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain SA181T and its closest phylogenetic neighbours, the type strains of Saccharothrix longispora , Saccharothrix texasensis and Saccharothrix xinjiangensis , were clearly below the 70 % threshold. The genotypic and phenotypic data showed that the isolate represents a novel species of the genus Saccharothrix , for which the name Saccharothrix hoggarensis sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain SA181T ( = DSM 45457T  = CCUG 60214T).

A Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, non-flagellated and motile by gliding bacterium HL2-2T, was isolated from the surface of the brown alga Endarachne binghamiae in China. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that this strain was affiliated with the genus Winogradskyella in the family Flavobacteriaceae and presented great similarity with the type strain Winogradskyella litoriviva KMM 6491T (97.9 % sequence similarity). The whole genome of strain HL2-2T comprised 3.6 Mbp with a G+C content of 31.9 mol%. The average nucleotide identity between strain HL2-2T and Winogradskyella litoriviva KMM 6491T was 83.7 %. Growth of the isolated strain was observed from 20–40 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH ranged from 5.5 to 8.0 (optimum, pH 6.0) and in the presence of 0–5 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0–2 %). The major fatty acids (>10 % of the total) were C16 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and the predominant menaquinone was MK-6. The combined phylogenetic, physiological and chemotaxonomic analysis show that the strain HL2-2T represents a novel species belonging to the genus Winogradskyella , for which the name Winogradskyella endarachnes sp. nov. is proposed, and which the type strain is HL2-2T (=CICC 24857T=KCTC 72882T).

A novel Gram-negative, rod–coccus shaped, non-motile, strain, RS-3T, was isolated from a sediment sample collected from the marine transect of Kongsfjorden, Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, Arctic. Colonies and broth cultures were yellowish in colour due to the presence of carotenoids. Strain RS-3T was positive for oxidase, aesculinase, caseinase, gelatinase and urease activities and negative for amylase, catalase, lipase, lysine decarboxylase, ornithine decarboxylase, DNase and β-galactosidase activities. The predominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (18.0), anteiso-C15 : 0 (16.8), iso-C15 : 1 G (14.2), anteiso-C15 : 1 A (6.0) and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH (6.8). Strain RS-3T contained MK-6 (72.42 %) and MK-7 (27.58 %) as the major respiratory quinones and phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids and two unidentified lipids make up the polar lipid composition. The DNA G+C content of strain RS-3T was 34.7±1.2 mol%. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that Winogradskyella pacifica and Winogradskyella thalassocola are the most closely related species with sequence similarities to the type strains of these species of 98.5 and 97.7 %, respectively. However, DNA–DNA hybridization with Winogradskyella pacifica KCTC 22997T and Winogradskyella thalassocola DSM 15363T showed a relatedness of 22 and 42.5 % with respect to strain RS-3T. Based on the DNA–DNA hybridization values, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics and phylogenetic inference, strain RS-3T is proposed as a novel species of the genus Winogradskyella , for which the name Winogradskyella psychrotolerans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Winogradskyella psychrotolerans sp. nov. is RS-3T ( = CIP 110154T = NBRC 106169T). An emended description of the genus Winogradskyella is provided.

Two strains of Gram-staining-negative, rod-shaped bacteria that were motile by gliding, N7d-4T and B4a-b5, were isolated during a study of culturable bacteria in soil cultivated with potatoes. These isolates grew at 15–37 °C and at pH 6.5–7.0. The major cellular fatty acids were summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c), anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C17 : 1ω9c. The major polar lipids were phosphatidyl-N-methylethanolamine and phosphatidylethanolamine. The strains contained d-18 : 0 and d-19 : 0 sphingosines. The DNA G+C contents of strains N7d-4T and B4a-b5 were 48.5 and 46.9 mol% (HPLC), respectively. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strains N7d-4T and B4a-b5 were affiliated with Pedobacter species in the family Sphingobacteriaceae . Strains N7d-4T and B4a-b5 shared 99.9 % sequence similarity, and the most closely related Pedobacter type strains were Pedobacter composti TR6-06T (96.5 and 96.7 % sequence similarity, respectively), P. oryzae N7T (95.4 and 95.6 %) and P. caeni LMG 22862T (94.0 and 94.4 %). Phenotypic data and phylogenetic inference clearly distinguished the two isolates from other Pedobacter species. Based on these data, the isolates are considered to represent a novel species of the genus Pedobacter , for which the name Pedobacter luteus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is N7d-4T ( = KCTC 22699T  = DSM 22385T).

A novel actinobacterium, designated strain BR-34T, was isolated from rhizosphere soil of bamboo (Phyllostachys nigro var. henonis) sampled in Damyang, Korea. The strain was found to have morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics typical of the genus Catenulispora . The strain contained iso-C16 : 0 as the major fatty acid and MK-9(H4), MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H8) as major isoprenoid quinones. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BR-34T formed a cluster separate from members of the genus Catenulispora and was related most closely to Catenulispora acidiphila ID139908T (97.4 % similarity), Catenulispora rubra Aac-30T (97.3 %), Catenulispora yoronensis TT N02-20T (97.3 %) and Catenulispora subtropica TT 99-48T (97 %). However, the level of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain BR-34T and C. acidiphila ID139908T was only 45.32 %. Based on DNA–DNA relatedness, morphological and phenotypic data, strain BR-34T could be distinguished from the type strains of phylogenetically related species. It is therefore considered to represent a novel species of the genus Catenulispora , for which the name Catenulispora graminis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BR-34T ( = KACC 15070T = NBRC 107755T).

A novel actinobacterium, strain A8036T, isolated from soil, was investigated by using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The organism formed extensively branched substrate hyphae that generated spiral chains of spores with irregular surfaces. The cell wall contained meso-diaminopimelic acid (type III) and cell-wall sugars were glucose, madurose, mannose and ribose. The predominant menaquinones were MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H4). The phospholipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylinositol mannosides. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1 cis9, C16 : 0, C15 : 0 and 10-methyl C17 : 0. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the closest phylogenetic neighbours of strain A8036T were Actinomadura meyerae DSM 44715T (99.23 % similarity), Actinomadura bangladeshensis DSM 45347T (98.9 %) and Actinomadura chokoriensis DSM 45346T (98.3 %). However, DNA–DNA relatedness and phenotypic data demonstrated that strain A8036T could be clearly distinguished from the type strains of all closely related Actinomadura species. Strain A8036T is therefore considered to represent a novel species of the genus Actinomadura , for which the name Actinomadura geliboluensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is A8036T ( = DSM 45508T = KCTC 19868T).
