A slightly halophilic, Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, non-motile rod, designated TW15T, was isolated from an ark clam in South Korea. Growth occurred at 10–37 °C, with 1–5 % (w/v) NaCl and at pH 7.0–10.0. Optimal growth occurred at 25–30 °C, with 2 % (w/v) NaCl and at pH 8.0. Strain TW15T exhibited both oxidase and catalase activities. The major fatty acids of strain TW15T were summed feature 8 (consisting of C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c) and 11-methyl C18 : 1ω7c. The predominant isoprenoid quinone was ubiquinone-10 (Q-10). The polar lipids of strain TW15T comprised phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified phospholipid, an unidentified aminolipid and five unidentified lipids. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain TW15T was most closely related to Ruegeria lacuscaerulensis DSM 11314T (98.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). DNA–DNA relatedness with closely related strains was <52±3 %. The DNA G+C content was 55.7 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic data, strain TW15T represents a novel species of the genus Ruegeria , for which the name Ruegeria conchae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TW15T ( = KACC 15115T  = JCM 17315T).

A novel bacterium, designated strain F051-1T, isolated from a seawater sample collected from the coast at Damupo beach in Pohang, Korea, was investigated in a polyphasic taxonomic study. Cells were yellow-pigmented, strictly aerobic, Gram-staining-negative and rod-shaped. The temperature, pH and NaCl ranges for growth were 4–30 °C, pH 6.0–9.0 and 1.0–6.0 % (w/v), respectively. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain F051-1T belongs to the genus Psychroserpens in the family Flavobacteriaceae . Its closest relatives were Psychroserpens burtonensis ACAM 188T (96.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Psychroserpens mesophilus KOPRI 13649T (95.7 %). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G and anteiso-C15 : 0. The polar lipid profile consisted of a mixture of phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids, one unidentified phospholipid and eight unidentified lipids. The major respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6 and the genomic DNA G+C content of the strain was 33.5 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genotypic data, strain F051-1T represents a novel species within the genus Psychroserpens , for which the name Psychroserpens damuponensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is F051-1T ( = KCTC 23539T  = JCM 17632T).

A novel halophilic, Gram-reaction-negative, strictly aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped and oxidase- and catalase-positive bacterial strain, designated WCC 4520T, was isolated from a semi-hard, Raclette-type cheese. The colonies were yellow–orange; flexirubin-type pigments were not found. The strain hydrolysed gelatin, hippurate, tyrosine and Tweens 20 and 80. Optimal growth was observed with 6–8 % (w/v) NaCl, at pH 7–8 and at 27–30 °C. The genomic DNA G+C content was 33.6 mol%. In phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain WCC 4520T appeared to be a member of the family Flavobacteriaceae and the closest phylogenetic neighbours were identified as Psychroflexus gondwanensis DSM 5423T (94.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Psychroflexus salinarum CCUG 56752T (94.0 %). The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The only detected quinone was MK-6 and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, an unidentified aminolipid and an unidentified polar lipid. Minor polar lipids and traces of polyamines were also detected. On the basis of the data presented, strain WCC 4520T represents a novel species of the genus Psychroflexus , for which the name Psychroflexus halocasei sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is WCC 4520T ( = LMG 25857T = CCUG 59705T).

A polyphasic taxonomic study was performed on two previously unidentified Arcanobacterium -like Gram-positive strains isolated from harbour seals. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that both bacteria belonged to the genus Arcanobacterium and were most closely related to Arcanobacterium haemolyticum CIP 103370T (98.4 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), A. canis P6775T (97.4 %), A. phocae DSM 10002T (97.4 %), A. pluranimalium M430/94/2T (95.7 %) and A. hippocoleae CCUG 44697T (95.5 %). The presence of the major menaquinone MK-9(H4) supported the affiliation of the isolates with the genus Arcanobacterium . The polar lipid profile consisted of major amounts of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside, an unidentified phospholipid and two unidentified glycolipids. The major fatty acids were C16 : 0, C18 : 0, C18 : 1ω9c and summed feature 5 (comprising C18 : 2ω6,9c and/or anteiso-C18 : 0). Physiological and biochemical tests clearly distinguished the isolates from other members of the genus Arcanobacterium . Based on the common origin and various physiological properties comparable to those of A. phocae , it is proposed that the isolates are classified as members of a novel species with the name Arcanobacterium phocisimile sp. nov. The type strain is 2698T ( = LMG 27073T  = CCM 8430T).

Three Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, rod-shaped with single polar flagellum, yellow-pigmented bacteria, designated strains XH031T, XH038-3 and XH80-1, were isolated from deep-sea sediment of the South Pacific Gyre (41° 51′ S 153° 6′ W) during the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 329. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolates belonged to the genus Luteimonas and showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Luteimonas aestuarii B9T (96.95 %), Luteimonas huabeiensis HB2T (96.93 %) and Xanthomonas cucurbitae LMG 690T (96.92 %). The DNA G+C contents of the three isolates were 70.2–73.9 mol%. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, iso-C11 : 0 and C16 : 010-methyl and/or iso-C17 : 1ω9c. The major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-8 (Q-8). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and one unknown phospholipid. On the basis of data from polyphasic analysis, the three isolates represent a novel species of the genus Luteimonas , for which the name Luteimonas abyssi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is XH031T ( = DSM 25880T = CGMCC 1.12611T).

A Gram-staining-negative, strictly aerobic, rod-shaped, pale-pink pigmented bacterial strain, designated TF8T, was isolated from leaf mould in Cheonan, Republic of Korea. Its taxonomic position was determined through a polyphasic approach. Optimal growth occurred on R2A agar without NaCl supplementation, at 25–28 °C and at pH 6.0–7.0. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain TF8T belongs to the genus Mucilaginibacter in the family Sphingobacteriaceae . The sequence similarity between 16S rRNA genes of strain TF8T and the type strains of other species of the genus Mucilaginibacter ranged from 92.1 to 94.7 %. The closest relatives of strain TF8T were Mucilaginibacter lutimaris BR-3T (94.7 %), M. soli R9-65T (94.5 %), M. litoreus BR-18T (94.5 %), M. rigui WPCB133T (94.0 %) and M. daejeonensis Jip 10T (93.8 %). The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-7 and the major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (33.0 %), summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c; 24.8 %) and summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c; 13.0 %). The major polar lipids of TF8T were phosphatidylethanolamine and three unidentified aminophospholipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 46.2 mol%. On the basis of the data presented here, strain TF8T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter , for which the name Mucilaginibacter koreensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TF8T ( = KACC 17468T = JCM 19323T).

A Gram-stain-negative bacterium, designated strain CBA4601T, was isolated from a seawater sample obtained off the coast of Jeju Island, Korea. The organism grew in the presence of 0–4 % (w/v) NaCl and at 20–35 °C and pH 7.0–9.0, with optimal growth in 2 % NaCl, and at 25 °C and pH 8.0. Phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain CBA4601T was related to the genus Ferrimonas within the class Gammaproteobacteria . 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain CBA4601T and Ferrimonas marina A4D-4T, the most closely related species, was 96.9 %. The G+C content of the genomic DNA from strain CBA4601T was 54.2 mol%, and the isoprenoid quinones menaquinone 7 (MK-7), ubiquinone 7 (Q-7) and ubiquinone 8 (Q-8) were detected. The major fatty acids were C17 : 1ω8c, C18 : 1ω9c and C16 : 0, and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified ninhydrin-positive phospholipid. On the basis of this taxonomic study using a polyphasic approach, strain CBA4601T represents a novel species of the genus Ferrimonas , for which the name Ferrimonas pelagia sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CBA4601T ( = KACC 16695T = KCTC 32029T = JCM 18401T).

A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic and rod-shaped motile bacterium with peritrichous flagella, designated strain LZB041T, was isolated from offshore surface seawater of the East China Sea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain LZB041T formed a lineage within the family ‘ Aurantimonadaceae ’ that was distinct from the most closely related genera Aurantimonas (96.0–96.4 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Aureimonas (94.5–96.0 %). Optimal growth occurred in the presence of 1–7 % (w/v) NaCl, at pH 7.0–8.0 and at 28–37 °C. Ubiquinone-10 was the predominant respiratory quinone. The major fatty acids (>10 % of total fatty acids) were C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c (summed feature 8) and cyclo-C19 : 0ω8c. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, one unknown aminolipid, one unknown phospholipid and one unknown polar lipid. The DNA G+C content of strain LZB041T was 71.3 mol%. On the basis of polyphasic analysis, strain LZB041T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the class Alphaproteobacteria , for which the name Jiella aquimaris gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is LZB041T ( = JCM 30119T = MCCC 1K00255T).

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated SW123T, was isolated from a deep-sea water sample collected from the Indian Ocean. Strain SW123T was strictly aerobic, catalase- and oxidase-positive. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 and summed feature 9 (comprising C16 : 0-methyl or iso-C17 : 1 ω9c). Ubiquinone-8 was the sole respiratory quinone. The major polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. The genomic DNA G+C content was 49.4 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain SW123T was closely related to Aliidiomarina shirensis AIST (96.7 % sequence similarity), Aliidiomarina iranensis GBPy7T (96.3%), Aliidiomarina haloalkalitolerans AK5T (96.0%) and Aliidiomarina celeris F3105T (95.9%). Phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain SW123T represented a novel member of the genus Aliidiomarina , forming a distinct cluster with A. celeris F3105T. On the basis of phylogenetic inference and phenotypic characteristics, we propose that strain SW123T represents a novel species of the genus Aliidiomarina , with the name Aliidiomarina indica sp. nov. The type strain is SW123T (=CGMCC1.16169T=KCTC 82234T).

A strictly aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile and yellow-pigmented bacterial strain, designated KMM 6208T, was isolated from a sea urchin. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that this novel isolate was affiliated to the class Gammaproteobacteria and formed a robust cluster with Arenicella xantha KMM 3895T with 98.2 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. Strain KMM 6208T grew in the presence of 0.5–5 % NaCl and at a temperature range of 4–38 °C. The isolate was oxidase-positive and hydrolysed aesculin, casein, chitin, gelatin, starch and Tweens 40 and 80. The prevalent fatty acids of strain KMM 6208T were C16 : 1ω7c, iso-C16 : 0, iso-C18 : 0, C18 : 1ω7c and C16 : 0. The polar lipids consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified aminophospholipid, and the major isoprenoid quinone was Q-8. The DNA G+C content of strain KMM 6208T was 46.3 mol%. The DNA–DNA relatedness value of strain KMM 6208T with Arenicella xantha KMM 3895T was 5 %. Molecular data in a combination with phenotypic findings strongly suggest inclusion of this novel strain in the genus Arenicella as a representative of a novel species for which the name Arenicella chitinivorans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KMM 6208T ( = KCTC 12711T = LMG 26983T).

A Gram-negative bacterium, designated CKTN2T, was isolated from compost. Cells of strain CKTN2T were strictly aerobic rods. The isolate grew at 20–50 °C (optimum 40–45 °C), but not below 15 °C or above 52 °C, and at pH 5.9–8.8 (optimum pH 7.0), but not below pH 5.4 or above pH 9.3. The DNA G+C content was 40.3 mol%. The predominant menaquinone was MK-7. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (45.2 %), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (11.1 %) and C18 : 0 (14.5 %). Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain CKTN2T revealed that it is a member of the genus Sphingobacterium and is most closely related to Sphingobacterium alimentarium DSM 22362T (93.2 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). Strain CKTN2T could be distinguished from its closest phylogenetic relatives by different phenotypic characteristics. According to the phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, strain CKTN2T represents a novel species of the genus Sphingobacterium , for which the name Sphingobacterium thermophilum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CKTN2T ( = JCM 17858T  = KCTC 23708T).
