A novel type of rock-weathering bacterium was isolated from weathered rock (tuff) surface collected from Dongxiang (Jiangxi, eastern China). Cells of strain G19T were Gram-reaction-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming and non-motile. The strain was aerobic, catalase- and oxidase-positive, and grew optimally at 30 °C and pH 7.0. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain G19T was shown to belong to the genus Bacillus and the closest phylogenetic relatives were Bacillus aryabhattai B8W22T (97.4 %) and Bacillus megaterium IAM 13418T (97.1 %). The DNA G+C content was 36.7 mol% and the predominant respiratory quinone was MK-7. The major fatty acids were iso-C14 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. The polar lipid profile of strain G19T contained phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified lipid. Based on the low level of DNA–DNA relatedness (ranging from 49.4 % to 55.0 %) to these type strains of species of the genus Bacillus and unique phenotypic characteristics, strain G19T represents a novel species of the genus Bacillus , for which the name Bacillus qingshengii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is G19T ( = CCTCC AB 2013273T = JCM 19454T).

A novel type of mineral-weathering bacterium was isolated from the weathered surface of rock (mica schist) collected from Susong (Anhui, China). Cells of strain L226T were Gram-stain-negative. The strain grew optimally at 30 °C, with 1 % (w/v) NaCl and at pH 7.0 in trypticase soy broth. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene phylogeny, strain L226T was shown to belong to the genus Burkholderia and the closest phylogenetic relatives were Burkholderia sprentiae WSM5005T (98.3 %), Burkholderia acidipaludis NBRC 101816T (98.2 %), Burkholderia tuberum STM678T (97.2 %) and Burkholderia diazotrophica JPY461T (97.1 %). The DNA G+C content was 63.5 mol% and the respiratory quinone was Q-8. The major fatty acids were C16 : 0, C17 : 0 cyclo and C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c. The polar lipid profile of strain L226T consisted of a mixture of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, unknown lipids and unidentified aminophospholipids. Based on the low level of DNA–DNA relatedness (ranging from 25.8 % to 34.4 %) to the tested type strains of species of the genus Burkholderia and unique phenotypic characteristics, it is suggested that strain L226T represents a novel species of the genus Burkholderia , for which the name Burkholderia susongensis sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is L226T ( = CCTCC AB2014142T = JCM 30231T).

A bacterial strain, designated Dd16T, was isolated from a hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) dumpsite at Lucknow, India. Cells of strain Dd16T were Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped and yellow-pigmented. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain belonged to the genus Sphingomonas in the family Sphingomonadaceae , as it showed highest sequence similarity to Sphingomonas asaccharolytica IFO 15499T (95.36 %), Sphingosinicella vermicomposti YC7378T (95.30), ‘Sphingomonas humi’ PB323 (95.20 %), Sphingomonas sanxanigenens NX02T (95.14 %) and Sphingomonas desiccabilis CP1DT (95.00 %). The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c) C14 : 0 2-OH, summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c) and C16 : 0. The polar lipid profile of strain Dd16T also corresponded to those reported for species of the genus Sphingomonas (phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, and a sphingoglycolipid), again supporting its identification as a member of the genus Sphingomonas . The predominant respiratory quinone was ubiquinone Q10, and sym-homospermidine was the major polyamine observed. The total DNA G+C content of strain Dd16T was 65.8 mol%. The results obtained on the basis of phenotypic characteristics and phylogenetic analysis and after biochemical and physiological tests, clearly distinguished strain Dd16T from closely related members of the genus Sphingomonas . Thus, strain Dd16T represents a novel species of the genus Sphingomonas for which the name Sphingomonas indica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Dd16T ( = DSM 25434T = CCM 7882T).

A bacterial strain, designated NSW-5T, was isolated from a water sample taken from Niao-Song Wetland Park in Taiwan and characterized using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Cells of strain NSW-5T were strictly aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, non-motile and polymorphic, being straight, vibrioid, curved and spiral-shaped rods surrounded by a thick capsule and forming light pink-coloured colonies. Some rings consisting of several cells were present. Growth occurred at 10–40 °C (optimum, 25 °C), with 0–3.0 % NaCl (optimum, 0 %) and at pH 6.0–8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain NSW-5T belonged to the genus Arcicella with sequence similarities of 98.6, 98.0 and 97.3 % with Arcicella aquatica NO-502T, Arcicella rosea TW5T and Arcicella aurantiaca TNR-18T, respectively. The predominant cellular fatty acids were summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c; 20.8 %), C16 : 0 (14.6 %), iso-C15 : 0 (13.8 %), C16 : 1ω5c (12.5 %) and C18 : 0 (11.4 %), and the only respiratory quinone was MK-7. The polar lipid profile consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine and several uncharacterized glycolipids, aminolipids, phospholipids and aminophospholipids. The DNA G+C content of strain NSW-5T was 44.1 mol%. The DNA–DNA relatedness of strain NSW-5T with respect to recognized species of the genus Arcicella was less than 70 %. On the basis of phylogenetic inference and phenotypic data, strain NSW-5T should be classified as a representative of a novel species, for which the name Arcicella rigui sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NSW-5T ( = KCTC 23307T = BCRC 80260T). Emended descriptions of the genus Arcicella and of Arcicella aquatica , Arcicella rosea and Arcicella aurantiaca are also proposed.

The Gram-strain-negative, rod-shaped, facultatively anaerobic, non-motile bacterial strain, designated S1-10T, was isolated from marine sediment. Strain S1-10T grew at 4–42 °C (optimally at 30–35 °C), at pH 7.0–10 (optimally at pH 9) and in the presence of 0.5–8 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain S1-10T was related to the genus Aequorivita and had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Aequorivita viscosa 8-1bT (97.7%). The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. The main respiratory quinone was menaquinone 6 (MK-6). The genomic DNA G+C content of strain S1-10T was 34.6 mol%. The polar lipid profile of strain S1-10T contained phosphatidylethanolamine, two aminolipids, two glycolipids, one phosphoglycolipid and three unidentified polar lipids. In addition, the maximum values of in silico DNA–DNA hybridization (isDDH) and average nucleotide identity (ANI) between strain S1-10T and A. viscosa CGMCC 1.11023T were 15.4 and 75.7 %, respectively. Combined data from phenotypic, phylogenetic, isDDH and ANI analyses demonstrated that strain S1-10T is the representative of a novel species of the genus Aequorivita , for which we propose the name Aequorivita sinensis sp. nov. (type strain S1-10T=CGMCC 1.12579T=JCM 19789T). We also propose that Vitellibacter todarodis and Vitellibacter aquimaris should be transferred into genus Aequorivita and be named Aequorivita todarodis comb. nov. and Aequorivita aquimaris comb. nov., respectively. The type strain of Aequorivita todarodis comb. nov. is MYP2-2T (= KCTC 62141T= NBRC 113025T) and the type strain of Aequorivita aquimaris comb. nov. is D-24T (=KCTC 42708T=DSM 101732T).

Two novel Gram-stain-positive, irregular rod-shaped actinomycetes, S-1144T and 4053, were isolated from leaves of Lamiophlomis rotata on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, PR China. Cells were aerobic, catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. Colonies on Reasoner’s 2A agar were light yellow, circular, shiny, smooth and convex after 2 days of incubation. The isolates grew optimally at 25 °C, pH 7.5 and with 0 % (w/v) NaCl. The results of polyphasic analyses indicated that strain S-1144T belonged to the genus Nocardioides and its close phylogenetic neighbours (16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) were Nocardioides litoris DSM 103718T (98.4 %), Nocardioides rubriscoriae DSM 23986T (98.2%) and Nocardioides plantarum DSM 11054T (97.8 %). The genome of strain S-1144T showed less than 70 % digital DNA–DNA hybridization and < 95–96 % average nucleotide identity values to the above reference strains. The DNA G+C content of strain S-1144T was 73.5 mol%. MK-8(H4) was the predominant respiratory quinone (96.0 %) and llLL-2,6-diaminopimelic acid was the diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. The polar lipid profile of strain S-1144T consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, three unidentified phospholipids, one unidentified glycolipid and one unidentified lipid. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1  ω8c, C17 : 0 and C18 : 1  ω9c. On the basis of obtained data, strain S-1144T represented a novel species of the genus Nocardioides , for which the name Nocardioides dongxiaopingii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S-1144T (=CGMCC 4.7568T=JCM 33469T).

Two Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-motile bacterial strains, 36D10-4-7T and 30C10-4-7T, were isolated from bark canker tissue of Populus × euramericana, respectively. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain 36D10-4-7T shows 98.0 % sequence similarity to Sphingomonas adhaesiva DSM 7418T, and strain 30C10-4-7T shows highest sequence similarity to Sphingobacterium arenae H-12T (95.6 %). Average nucleotide identity analysis indicates that strain 36D10-4-7T is a novel member different from recognized species in the genus Sphingomonas . The main fatty acids and respiratory quinone detected in strain 36D10-4-7T are C18 : 1  ω7c and/or C18 : 1  ω6c and Q-10, respectively. The polar lipids are diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, aminolipid, phosphatidylethanolamine, sphingoglycolipid, two uncharacterized phospholipids and two uncharacterized lipids. For strain 30C10-4-7T, the major fatty acids and menaquinone are iso-C15 : 0, C16 : 1  ω7c and/or C16 : 1  ω6c and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and MK-7, respectively. The polar lipid profile includes phosphatidylethanolamine, phospholipids, two aminophospholipids and six unidentified lipids. Based on phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, these two strains represent two novel species within the genera Sphingomonas and Sphingobacterium . The name Sphingomonas corticis sp. nov. (type strain 36D10-4-7T=CFCC 13112T=KCTC 52799T) and Sphingobacterium corticibacterium sp. nov. (type strain 30C10-4-7T=CFCC 13069T=KCTC 52797T) are proposed.

A novel slightly halophilic Gram-stain-negative bacterial strain (MKS20T) was isolated from a brine sample collected from one of the Anderton brine springs in the Cheshire salt district, located in Northern England. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed a close proximity to Motilimonas eburnea (98.30 %), followed by Motilimonas pumila (96.62 %), the two currently described species within the genus Motilimonas . Strain MKS20T forms white-beige-pigmented colonies and grows optimally at 28–30 °C, in 1–3 % (w/v) NaCl and at pH 7–7.5. The strain was facultatively anaerobic and showed a broader range of carbohydrate use than other species in the genus Motilimonas . Q-8 was the sole respiratory quinone and the major fatty acids (>10 %) were summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω6c and/or C16 : 1 ω7c) and C16 : 0. The polar lipid profile included diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidyglycerol and several unidentified lipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 44.2 mol%. Average nucleotide identity and DNA–DNA hybridization data were consistent with assignment to a separate species. Based on the phylogenetic and genomic-based analyses, as well as physiological and biochemical characteristics, we propose that strain MKS20T (=DSM 109936T, MCCC 1K04071T) represents a new species of the genus Motilimonas , with the name Motilimonas cestriensis sp. nov.

A Gram-stain-negative, short rod-shaped, non-flagellated, yellow bacterium, designated strain 5GHs7-2T, was isolated from a greenhouse soil sample in South Korea. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of strain 5GHs7-2T indicated that the isolate belonged to the family Chitinophagaceae , and exhibited the highest sequence similarities with members of the genera Terrimonas (89.2–92.6 %), Sediminibacterium (90.8–91.4 %) and Chitinophaga (89.2–91.7 %), Filimonas lacunae YT21T (91.7 %), members of the genus Segetibacter (90.2–91.6 %), Parasegetibacter luojiensis RHYL-37T (90.9 %) and Flavihumibacter petaseus T41T (91.2 %). Flexirubin-type pigments were present. The major cellular fatty acids of the novel strain were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 1 G. The polar lipid profile consisted of a large amount of phosphatidylethanolamine, and moderate and small amounts of several unknown aminolipids and lipids. The only respiratory quinone of strain 5GHs7-2T was MK-7, and the DNA G+C content was 47.6 mol%. On the basis of the evidence presented, it is concluded that strain 5GHs7-2T represents a novel species of a new genus in the family Chitinophagaceae , for which the name Parafilimonas terrae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is 5GHs7-2T ( = KACC 17343T = DSM 28286T).

A novel Gram-stain-negative, facultative aerobic and rod-shaped bacterium, designated as MKL-01T and isolated from the blood of immunocompromised patient, was genotypically and phenotypically characterized. The colonies were found to be creamy yellow and convex. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene and whole-genome sequences revealed that strain MKL-01T was most closely related to Cupriavidus gilardii LMG 5886T, present within a large cluster in the genus Cupriavidus . The genome sequence of strain MKL-01T showed the highest average nucleotide identity value of 92.1 % and digital DNA–DNA hybridization value of 44.8 % with the closely related species C. gilardii LMG 5886T. The genome size of the isolate was 5 750 268 bp, with a G+C content of 67.87 mol%. The strain could grow at 10–45 °C (optimum, 37–40 °C), in the presence of 0–10 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0.5%) and at pH 6.0–10.0 (optimum, pH 7.0). Strain MKL-01T was positive for catalase and negative for oxidase. The major fatty acids were C16 : 0, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1  ω7c/C16 : 1  ω6c and/or C16 : 1  ω6c/C16 : 1  ω7c) and summed feature 8 (C18 : 1  ω7c and/or C18 : 1  ω6c). The polar lipid profile consisted of phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified phospholipids and one unidentified polar lipid. Moreover, strain MKL-01T contained ubiquinone Q-8 as the sole respiratory quinone. Based on its molecular, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic properties, strain MKL-01T represents a novel species of the genus Cupriavidus ; the name Cupriavidus cauae sp. nov. is proposed for this strain. The type strain is MKL-01T.

A Gram-negative bacterium, designated S1-65T, was isolated from soil samples collected from a cotton field located in the Xinjiang region of PR China. Results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain S1-65T was affiliated to the genus Steroidobacter with its closest phylogenetic relatives being ‘Steroidobacter cummioxidans’ 35Y (98.4 %), ‘ Steroidobacter agaridevorans ’ SA29-B (98.3 %) and Steroidobacter agariperforans KA5-BT (98.3 %). 16S rRNA-directed phylogenetic analysis showed that strain S1-65T formed a unique phylogenetic subclade next to ‘ S. agaridevorans ’ SA29-B and S. agariperforans KA5-BT, suggesting that strain S1-65T should be identified as a member of the genus Steroidobacter . Further, substantial differences between the genotypic properties of strain S1-65T and the members of the genus Steroidobacter , including average nucleotide identity and digital DNA–DNA hybridization, resolved the taxonomic position of strain S1-65T and suggested its positioning as representing a novel species of the genus Steroidobacter . The DNA G+C content of strain S1-65T was 62.5 mol%, based on its draft genome sequence. The predominant respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-8. The main fatty acids were identified as summed feature 3 (C16:1ω6c/C16:1ω7c), C16 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0. In addition, its polar lipid profile was composed of aminophospholipid, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. Here, we propose a novel species of the genus Steroidobacter : Steroidobacter gossypii sp. nov. with the type strain S1-65T (=JCM 34287T=CGMCC 1.18736T).
