Three novel strains were isolated from a soil sample collected in Japan using GPM agar plates supplemented with superoxide dismutase and/or catalase. The strains were Gram-positive, catalase-positive, irregular rod-shaped bacteria with meso-diaminopimelic acid as a peptidoglycan diagnostic diamino acid, and the acyl type of the peptidoglycan was acetyl. The major menaquinone was MK-8(H4). Mycolic acids were not detected. The G+C content of the DNA was 72–73 mol%. On the basis of morphological and chemotaxonomic properties and a phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequences, these strains were classified as a novel genus and species, Oryzihumus leptocrescens gen. nov., sp. nov., in the family Intrasporangiaceae of the order Actinomycetales. The type strain is KV-628T (=NRRL B-24347T=JCM 12835T=NBRC 100762T).

A novel strain of the genus Paenibacillus, KFC91T, was isolated from the Kafni glacier of the Himalayas. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain KFC91T clustered with Paenibacillus antarcticus LMG 22078T (98.9 %) and Paenibacillus macquariensis LMG 6935T (98.7 %). The cell wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diamino acid, anteiso-C15 : 0 as the predominant fatty acid and MK-7 as the major isoprenoid quinone. Based on the phylogenetic analysis, chemotaxonomic characteristics and other phenotypic traits, strain KFC91T was assigned to the genus Paenibacillus. DNA–DNA hybridization experiments of KFC91T with P. antarcticus and P. macquariensis showed reassociation values of 39 and 52 %, respectively. Thus, it is proposed that strain KFC91T should be assigned the status of a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus and the name proposed is Paenibacillus glacialis sp. nov., with KFC91T (=NCCB 100252T =DSM 22343T) as the type strain.

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, non-sporulating, motile and moderately halophilic bacterium, designated strain H96B60T, was isolated from a saline soil sample of the Qaidam basin, China. The strain was facultatively anaerobic. Major end products formed from glucose fermentation were acetate, ethanol and lactic acid. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. The isoprenoid quinone component was menaquinone-6 (MK-6). The predominant cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0, anteiso-C13 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain H96B60T was 36.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on comparative 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain H96B60T represented a novel phyletic lineage within the family Bacillaceae and was related most closely to Halolactibacillus species (96.1–96.4 % similarity). Based on the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data presented, strain H96B60T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Streptohalobacillus salinus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Streptohalobacillus salinus is H96B60T ( = DSM 22440T  = CGMCC 1.7733T).

A novel actinobacterium, designated strain C4-31T, was isolated from soil collected from a cave. Cells were aerobic, Gram-reaction-positive, oxidase-negative, catalase-positive and non-motile cocci. Comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the organism occupied a distinct phylogenetic position within the suborder Frankineae, with sequence similarity values of less than 93.2 % to members of this suborder. The diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major menaquinone was MK-9(H4). The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside, an unknown aminophospholipid and an unknown phospholipid. The major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1ω6c and C16 : 0. The G+C content of the DNA was 62.8 mol%. On the basis of morphological and chemotaxonomic data as well as phylogenetic evidence, strain C4-31T ( = KCTC 39556T = DSM 100065T) is considered to represent the type strain of a novel species of a new genus in the suborder Frankineae, for which the name Antricoccus suffuscus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed.

A novel Gram-positive, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain RB-62T, was isolated during a study of culturable bacteria from the gut of Moechotypa diphysis (Pascoe) and its taxonomic position was investigated. Strain RB-62T grew at 15–30 °C and pH 5.0–8.5. The isoprenoid quinones were menaquinones MK-11 (77.1 %), MK-10 (11.7 %) and MK-12 (11.2 %). The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (34.6 %), anteiso-C17 : 0 (29.8 %), iso-C16 : 0 (17.0 %) and cyclohexyl-C17 : 0 (11.4 %). The diagnostic diamino acid of the cell-wall peptidoglycan was 2,4-diaminobutyric acid. The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain RB-62T was 70.3 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain RB-62T was affiliated with the genus Herbiconiux cluster within the family Microbacteriaceae, and was related most closely to Herbiconiux ginsengi wged11T (98.08 % similarity). The level of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain RB-62T and H. ginsengi wged11T was 43.2 % (reciprocal 66.7 %). Phenotypic and phylogenetic characteristics clearly distinguished strain RB-62T from recognized species of the genus Herbiconiux. Based on data from the present polyphasic study, strain RB-62T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Herbiconiux, for which the name Herbiconiux moechotypicola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is RB-62T ( = KCTC 19653T = JCM 16117T).

A novel, yellow-pigmented actinobacterium was isolated from a small stone collected in Jeju, Republic of Korea. The cells of the organism, designated strain R-Ac013T, were Gram-positive, aerobic, non-motile cocci that occurred singly or in pairs. The strain showed growth at 10–37 °C and pH 4.1–11.1, and tolerated 2 % NaCl. On the basis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence, the organism was phylogenetically related to members of the genera Tetrasphaera (94.6–97.1 % sequence similarity), Terrabacter (96.5 %), Knoellia (96.4 %), Terracoccus (96.4 %), Oryzihumus (96.4 %), Janibacter (96.1–96.4 %) and Intrasporangium (96.2 %). The chemotaxonomic results for the organism were as follows: ll-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid in the peptidoglycan, acetyl-type murein, MK-8(H4) as the major menaquinone, a DNA G+C content of 74.1 mol%, and a polar lipid profile that comprised diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol. The fatty acid profile consisted of iso- and anteiso-methyl-branched, straight-chain saturated and monounsaturated types, the major components being iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1 ω8c and iso-C15 : 0. The combination of the phenotypic and phylogenetic data revealed that this strain represents a novel genus and species of the family Intrasporangiaceae, for which the name Lapillicoccus jejuensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is strain R-Ac013T (=KCTC 19200T=DSM 18607T).

Two novel filamentous bacteria, strains SCSIO 11157T and SCSIO 11154T, were isolated from a deep-sea sediment sample. Strain SCSIO 11157T grew optimally at 55–60 °C, while strain SCSIO 11154T grew optimally at 40 °C. Both strains produced aerial and substrate mycelia. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences of strains SCSIO 11157T and SCSIO 11154T showed that the isolates were affiliated to the family Thermoactinomycetaceae. The two isolates contained ll-diaminopimelic acid as the cell-wall diamino acid, and did not have diagnostic sugars. The major polar lipids of strain SCSIO 11157T were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylmethylethanolamine, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol, and the major polar lipids of SCSIO 11154T were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine. The predominant menaquinone of both strains was MK-7. The major cellular fatty acids of strain SCSIO 11157T were iso-C15 : 0, C18 : 1ω9c and iso-C17 : 0, and strain SCSIO 11154T contained iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 as major fatty acids. The DNA G+C contents of strains SCSIO 11157T and SCSIO 11154T were 54.2 and 51.8 mol %, respectively. On the basis of its phenotypic and phylogenetic properties, strain SCSIO 11157T represents a novel species in the new genus, for which we propose the name Marinithermofilum abyssi gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain of Marinithermofilum abyssi is SCSIO 11157T ( = CGMCC 1.15179T = NBRC 109939T). Strain SCSIO 11154T represents a novel species of the genus Desmospora, for which we propose the name Desmospora profundinema sp. nov. The type strain is SCSIO 11154T ( = DSM 45903T = NBRC 109626T).

Strain KV-657T was isolated from a paddy field soil sample collected in Japan using GPM agar plates supplemented with catalase. The strain was a Gram-positive, aerobic organism that formed branching hyphae with ll-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic peptidoglycan diamino acid. The major menaquinone was MK-8(H4). Mycolic acids were not detected. The G+C content of the DNA was 70 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that this strain is closely related to Intrasporangium calvum DSM 43043T, with a similarity of 97.6 %. Based on the morphological, biochemical and chemotaxonomic properties of this strain and phylogenetic analysis, it was concluded that this isolate represents a new genus and species in the family Intrasporangiaceae, for which the name Humihabitans oryzae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Humihabitans oryzae is KV-657T (=NRRL B-24470T =NBRC 101802T).

An orange-pigmented bacterium, designated strain 13-9-B8T, was isolated from a seawater sample collected at Marado, Jeju Island, South Korea. The novel strain was Gram-staining-negative, non-motile, non-gliding, rod-shaped and aerobic. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the strain clustered with members of the genus Lewinella of the family Saprospiraceae in the phylum Bacteroidetes and was most closely related to the species Lewinella marina (95.6 % similarity to the type strain). Strain 13-9-B8T grew optimally at 30 °C, pH 7.0 and with 2 % (w/v) NaCl. Strain 13-9-B8T contained MK-7 as the predominant menquinone and summed feature 3, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH as the major fatty acids. The polar lipids detected in strain 13-9-B8T were phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminolipid, one unidentified phospholipid and eight unidentified lipids. The DNA G+C content of strain 13-9-B8T was 59.1 mol%. Based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data presented, strain 13-9-B8T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Lewinella, for which the name Lewinella xylanilytica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 13-9-B8T ( = DSM 29526T = KCTC 32663T).

A Gram-stain-negative, coccus-shaped, obligately anaerobic, non-motile and non-spore-forming bacterium, designated strain JN500902T, was isolated from the mud in a fermentation cellar used continuously over 30 years for Chinese strong-flavour baijiu production. Colonies were white, circular, convex and smooth-edged. Growth was observed at 20–40 °C (optimum, 37 °C), at pH 5.0–10 (optimum, pH 7.5), with 0–2 % (w/v) NaCl and with 0–4 % (v/v) ethanol. The Biolog assay demonstrated positive reactions of strain JN500902T in the metabolism of l-fucose and pyruvate. The predominant cellular fatty acids (>10 %) consisted of C16 : 0 and C14 : 0. The major end metabolites of strain JN500902T were acetic acid and ethanol when incubated anaerobically in liquid reinforced clostridial medium. Acetate was the major organic acid end product. The complete genome size of strain JN500902T was 3 420 321 bp with 3327 identified genes. The G+C content was 43.5 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences affiliated strain JN500902T with the family Lachnospiraceae , having low sequence similarity (92.8 %) to the nearest type strain, Syntrophococcus sucromutans DSM 3224T and forming a clearly distinct branch. Core genome phylogenetic analysis of the isolate and 134 strains belonging to the family Lachnospiraceae also revealed that strain JN500902T was well-separated from other genera of this family as a monophyletic clade. The average nucleotide identity and amino acid identity values between strain JN500902T and 134 Lachnospiraceae strains were less than 74 and 65 %, respectively. Considering its polyphasic characteristics, strain JN500902T represents a novel genus and species within the family Lachnospiraceae , for which the name Novisyntrophococcus fermenticellae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JN500902T (=CICC 24502T=JCM 33939T).

In the context of studying the effects of transgenic fructan-producing potatoes on the community structure of phyllosphere bacteria, a group of strains closely related to the species Leifsonia ginsengi was isolated. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the new isolates and L. ginsengi DSM 19088T formed a lineage at the genus level and this finding was supported by chemotaxonomic characterization. The peptidoglycan type of the representative isolate, K134/01T, and L. ginsengi DSM 19088T was B2γ, with d- and l-diaminobutyric acid as the diagnostic diamino acid and glycine, alanine and threo-3-hydroxyglutamic acid. The almost-complete substitution of glutamic acid by threo-3-hydroxyglutamic acid supported the differentiation of the new strains from recognized species of the genus Leifsonia. Furthermore, the detection of substantial amounts of the fatty acid cyclohexyl-C17 : 0 in the new isolates and L. ginsengi DSM 19088T was a prominent chemotaxonomic feature for a clear demarcation of these strains from all genera of the family Microbacteriaceae that display the B2γ cell-wall type. Comparative phylogenetic and phenotypic analyses of the isolates and L. ginsengi DSM 19088T revealed the separate species status of the isolates. On the basis of these results, it is proposed that L. ginsengi should be classified as the type species of a novel genus, Herbiconiux gen. nov., with the name Herbiconiux ginsengi gen. nov., comb. nov. (type strain wged11T = CGMCC 4.3491T = JCM 13908T = DSM 19088T = NBRC 104580T). The phyllosphere isolates are assigned to a novel species, Herbiconiux solani sp. nov. (type strain K134/01T = DSM 19813T = LMG 24387T = NBRC 106740T).
