A facultatively anaerobic, moderately alkaliphilic, Gram-positive, spore-forming and rod-shaped bacterial strain, Shu-P-Ggiii25-2T, was isolated from lake sediment in Shizuoka, Japan, and was characterized taxonomically using a polyphasic approach. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that the novel isolate clustered with the type strain of Amphibacillus xylanus and it exhibited sequence similarities of 94.9–95.6 % to the type strains of species of the genus Amphibacillus. Isoprenoid quinones and oxidase and catalase activities were not detected for strain Shu-P-Ggiii25-2T. The DNA G+C content was 42.3 mol%, the cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid and the major cellular fatty acids were iso-C14 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. On the basis of phylogenetic position and phenotypic properties, strain Shu-P-Ggiii25-2T represents a novel species of the genus Amphibacillus, for which the name Amphibacillus sediminis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Shu-P-Ggiii25-2T (=MBIC08269T=IAM 15428T=KCTC 13120T). An emended description of the genus Amphibacillus is also given.

A novel actinobacterium, designated strain C4-31T, was isolated from soil collected from a cave. Cells were aerobic, Gram-reaction-positive, oxidase-negative, catalase-positive and non-motile cocci. Comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the organism occupied a distinct phylogenetic position within the suborder Frankineae, with sequence similarity values of less than 93.2 % to members of this suborder. The diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major menaquinone was MK-9(H4). The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside, an unknown aminophospholipid and an unknown phospholipid. The major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1ω6c and C16 : 0. The G+C content of the DNA was 62.8 mol%. On the basis of morphological and chemotaxonomic data as well as phylogenetic evidence, strain C4-31T ( = KCTC 39556T = DSM 100065T) is considered to represent the type strain of a novel species of a new genus in the suborder Frankineae, for which the name Antricoccus suffuscus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed.

Three actinomycetes (strains HKI 0478T, HKI 0479 and HKI 0480) isolated from the surfaces of rocks in the Feengrotten medieval alum slate mine (Thuringia, Germany) were examined in a polyphasic taxonomic study. The following morphological and chemotaxonomic features supported their classification as members of the genus Kribbella: the presence of ll-diaminopimelic acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan; glucose together with minor amounts of mannose and ribose as the whole-cell sugars; polar lipids comprising phosphatidylcholine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and unknown phospho- and glycolipids; fatty acid profiles characterized by the predominance of anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and C16 : 0 9-methyl; and the presence of MK-9(H4) as the main menaquinone. The isolates had almost identical 16S rRNA gene sequences (99.9–100 %) and were most closely related to the type strains of Kribbella jejuensis (98.9 % sequence similarity), Kribbella swartbergensis and Kribbella solani (both 98.8 %). A wide range of genotypic and phenotypic markers as well as the low levels of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain HKI 0478T and the type strains of K. jejuensis (41.3 %), K. swartbergensis (18.6 %) and K. solani (14.2 %) distinguished the novel strains from their closest phylogenetic neighbours. On the basis of these results, strain HKI 0478T represents a novel member of the genus Kribbella, for which the name Kribbella aluminosa sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HKI 0478T (=DSM 18824T =JCM 14599T).

Two facultatively anaerobic bacterial strains, designated WR061T and WR054, were isolated from rice-straw residue in a methanogenic reactor treating waste from cattle farms in Japan. The two strains were phylogenetically positioned close to one another and had almost the same phenotypic properties. Cells were Gram-reaction-positive, non-motile, non-spore-forming, irregular rods. Cobalamin (vitamin B12) was required for growth. The strains utilized various carbohydrates, including hexoses and disaccharides, and produced acetate and propionate from these carbohydrates. Pentoses and polysaccharides were not utilized. They grew at 20–37 °C (optimum 35 °C) and pH 5.3–8.0 (optimum pH 6.8–7.5). Catalase and nitrate-reducing activities were detected. Aesculin was hydrolysed. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and C15 : 0 DMA, the major respiratory quinone was menaquinone MK-9(H4) and the genomic DNA G+C content was 69.3–69.5 mol%. The diagnostic diamino acid in the peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences placed the strains in the phylum Actinobacteria. Both strains were remotely related to the species in the family Propionibacteriaceae and Propionibacterium propionicum JCM 5830T was the most closely related type strain with a sequence similarity of 91.6 %. Based on phylogenetic, physiological and chemotaxonomic analyses, the two novel strains together represent a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Propioniciclava tarda gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is WR061T ( = JCM 15804T  = DSM 22130T).

Two actinomycete strains were isolated from soil surrounding mangrove roots. The isolates formed short spore chains with spores showing diverse shapes. The isolates contained glutamic acid, glycine, alanine and meso-diaminopimelic acid in the cell wall, 3-O-methylmannose, mannose, galactose and glucose as the whole-cell sugars and MK-10(H6), MK-10(H4), MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H4) as the predominant isoprenoid quinones. The isolates formed a distinct taxon in the phylogenetic tree of the Micromonosporaceae based on analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences and showed chemical and phenotypic properties that were different from members of all of the other genera of this family. Based on these observations, it is proposed that the novel isolates belong to a new genus, Polymorphospora gen. nov. The type species of the genus is proposed as Polymorphospora rubra sp. nov., with strain TT 97-42T (=NBRC 101157T=DSM 44947T) as the type strain.

A Gram-variable, motile, endospore-forming, slightly halophilic bacterial strain, DSW-10T, was isolated from Dokdo, an island located at the edge of the East Sea, Korea, and was characterized taxonomically by using a polyphasic approach. This isolate grew optimally at 37 °C and in the presence of 4–5 % NaCl. Strain DSW-10T had cell-wall peptidoglycan based on meso-diaminopimelic acid, MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone, and anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0 as major fatty acids. Major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and unidentified phospholipids. The DNA G+C content was 36·7 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DSW-10T is phylogenetically affiliated to the genus Virgibacillus, and exhibited sequence similarity of 95·3–98·7 % to the type strains of Virgibacillus species. DNA–DNA relatedness levels between strain DSW-10T and the type strains of some phylogenetically related Virgibacillus species were in the range 8·4–17·5 %. On the basis of phenotypic properties and phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, strain DSW-10T (=KCTC 3933T=DSM 16826T) was classified as the type strain of a novel Virgibacillus species, for which the name Virgibacillus dokdonensis sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-positive, spore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium, designated J1T was isolated from deep-sea mud collected from the South China Sea and subjected to polyphasic taxonomic investigation. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that J1T clustered with the type strains of Amphibacillus cookii , Amphibacillus sediminis and Amphibacillus jilinensis and exhibited a range of similarity of 93.9–97.0 % to members of the genus Amphibacillus . The DNA G+C content was 36.7 mol%. Chemotaxonomic analysis showed no quinones, and the cell wall contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid for strain J1T. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. Strain J1T was positive for catalase activity and negative for oxidase activity. On the basis of phylogenetic position and phenotypic properties, strain J1T represents a novel species of the genus Amphibacillus and the name Amphibacillus marinus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is J1T ( = CGMCC 1.10434T = JCM 17099T).

A rod-shaped, endospore-forming, Gram-reaction-positive bacterium, designated strain WPCB018T, was isolated from a fresh water sample collected from Woopo wetland, Korea. The isolate was identified as a member of the genus Paenibacillus on the basis of phenotypic characteristics and phylogenetic inference based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and unknown aminophospholipids. The diamino acid found in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. The predominant menaquinone was MK-7. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (32.2 %), C16 : 0 (20.1 %) and C18 : 0 (18.1 %). The DNA G+C content was 56.0 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain WPCB018T belongs to a cluster comprising species of the genus Paenibacillus, its closest neighbours being Paenibacillus humicus PC-147T (97.5 %) and Paenibcillus pasadenensis SAFN-007T (96.2 %). Genomic DNA–DNA hybridizations performed with strain WPCB018T and type strains of the species P. humicus, P. pinihumi, P. phyllosphaerae, P. pasadenensis and P. tarimensis showed relatedness values of only 10, 17, 18, 19 and 20 %, respectively. On the basis of phenotypic, molecular and genetic evidence, strain WPCB018T represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus wooponensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the novel species is WPCB018T ( = KCTC 13280T  = JCM 16350T).

A Gram-variable, motile and rod-shaped bacterial strain, ASL-1T, was isolated from a marine saltern located on the coast of the Yellow Sea, Korea. A neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain ASL-1T clustered with Jeotgalibacillus alimentarius YKJ-13T and that this cluster joined the clade comprising the type strains of two Marinibacillus species. Strain ASL-1T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 97.3 % to J. alimentarius YKJ-13T and 96.5 % to the type strains of Marinibacillus marinus and Marinibacillus campisalis. The chemotaxonomic properties of strain ASL-1T were similar to those of one or two of the genera Jeotgalibacillus and Marinibacillus. The peptidoglycan type was A1α linked directly through l-lysine as the diamino acid. Strain ASL-1T contained MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone with the presence of a significant amount of MK-8. The predominant fatty acid was anteiso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 42.9 mol%. Differential phenotypic properties, together with the phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, revealed that strain ASL-1T could be differentiated from J. alimentarius and the two Marinibacillus species. On the basis of the data presented, strain ASL-1T represents a novel species within the genus Jeotgalibacillus, for which the name Jeotgalibacillus salarius sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is ASL-1T (=KCTC 13257T=CCUG 56751T). It is also proposed that Marinibacillus marinus and Marinibacillus campisalis be reclassified as Jeotgalibacillus marinus comb. nov. (type strain 581T=DSM 1297T=ATCC 29841T=CCUG 28884T=CIP 103308T=LMG 6930T) and Jeotgalibacillus campisalis comb. nov. (type strain SF-57T=KCCM 41644T=JCM 11810T), respectively.

The crude-oil-degrading strain BAS3T represents a novel Nocardioides species, according to a taxonomic study. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain BAS3T was most similar to that of Nocardioides ganghwensis (IMSNU 14028T; 99 % similarity), but the DNA–DNA relatedness to this type strain was only 32 %. The physiological properties of strain BAS3T differ from those of N. ganghwensis (IMSNU 14028T) and other species of Nocardioides. The diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan of strain BAS3T is ll-diaminopimelic acid and the major menaquinone is MK-8(H4). The name Nocardioides oleivorans sp. nov. is proposed for the novel Nocardioides species, since its type strain, BAS3T (=DSM 16090T=NCIMB 14004T), is able to degrade crude oil.

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-motile and rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated W-WS13T, was isolated from wood falls collected around Wando, an island in the South Sea of South Korea, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Strain W-WS13T grew optimally at 30 °C, at pH 7.5 and in the presence of 0.5 % NaCl. A neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain W-WS13T belonged to the genus Pedobacter, clustering robustly with the type strain of Pedobacter arcticus, sharing 95.9 % sequence similarity. Strain W-WS13T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 90.1–95.6 % to the type strains of the other species of the genus Pedobacter. Strain W-WS13T contained MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c) and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipid detected in strain W-WS13T was phosphatidylethanolamine. The DNA G+C content of strain W-WS13T was 36.9 mol%. Phylogenetic distinctiveness and differential phenotypic properties of strain W-WS13T revealed that the novel strain is separated from recognized species of the genus Pedobacter. On the basis of the data presented, strain W-WS13T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Pedobacter, for which the name Pedobacter lignilitoris sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is W-WS13T ( = KCTC 42500T = CECT 8725T).
