A yellow-pigmented bacterial strain, designated Y2T, was isolated from farmland soil in Bengbu, Anhui province, China. Cells of strain Y2T were Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, non-motile and rod-shaped. Strain Y2T grew optimally at pH 7.0, 30 °C and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. The DNA G+C content was 68.9 mol%. The major fatty acids (>5 %) were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0, summed feature 9 (C16 : 0 10-methyl and/or iso-C17 : 1ω9c), iso-C11 : 0 3-OH and iso-C11 : 0. The major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-8 (Q-8), and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain Y2T was most closely related to Luteimonas mephitis B1953/27.1T (99.1 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), followed by Luteimonas lutimaris G3T (98.6 %), Luteimonas abyssi XH031T (96.2 %) and Luteimonas aquatica RIB1-20T (96.0 %). Strain Y2T exhibited low DNA–DNA relatedness with Luteimonas mephitis B1953/27.1T (43.6 ± 0.5 %) and Luteimonas lutimaris G3T (43.9 ± 2.1 %). On the basis of phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic evidence, strain Y2T represents a novel species of the genus Luteimonas, for which the name Luteimonas soli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Y2T ( = ACCC 19799T = KCTC 42441T).

Abstract Strain SZY PN-1T, representing a novel Gram-negative, aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped and yellow-pigmented bacterium, was isolated from a skin sample of a healthy Chinese people. Growth of SZY PN-1T optimally occurred at pH 7.0, at 30 ºC and tolerate up to 1.0 % (w/v) NaCl. According to the absorption spectrum, carotenoid was present in the cells. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene revealed that strain SZY PN-1T shared high similarities with Sandaracinobacter sibiricus RB16-17T (97.1 %) and Sandaracinobacter neustonicus JCM 30734T (96.6 %), respectively. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences together with protein-concatamer tree showed that SZY PN-1T formed a separate branch within the genus Sandaracinobacter. The DNA G+C content of the strain SZY PN-1T was 65.0 % (genome). The polar lipid profile included phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, two sphingoglycolipids, diphosphatidylglycerol, five unidentified glycolipids and seven unidentified lipids. The predominant fatty acids (> 10.0 %) were identified as C18:1 ω7c and/or C18:1 ω6c, C17:1 ω6c, C16:1 ω7c and/or C16:1 ω6c. The major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone Q-10. Based on the phenotypic and genotypic features, we proposed Sandaracinobacter hominis sp. nov. with type strain SZY PN-1T (= KCTC 82150T = NBRC 114675T).

A Gram-negative, yellow-pigmented, rod-shaped, strictly aerobic, non-flagellated, oxidase- and catalase-positive, marine bacterium, designated A2T, was isolated from a marine sponge, Hymeniacidon flavia, collected from the coast of Jeju Island, South Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on nearly complete 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain A2T was a member of the family Flavobacteriaceae. Its closest relatives were Formosa agariphila KMM 3901T and Formosa algae KMM 3553T (96.99 and 96.98 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, respectively). DNA–DNA relatedness between strain A2T and F. agariphila KMM 3901T and F. algae KMM 3553T was 14.1 and 26.8 %, respectively. The dominant fatty acids (>5 %) of strain A2T were iso-C15 : 0 (33.9 %), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (20.8 %), iso-C15 : 1 G (10.5 %) and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH (6.1 %). The DNA G+C content of strain A2T was 36.0 mol% and the major respiratory quinone was MK-6. On the basis of phenotypic and phylogenetic analysis, strain A2T represents a novel species of the genus Formosa, for which the name Formosa spongicola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is A2T (=KCTC 22662T =DSM 22637T).

A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped, manganese-oxidizing bacterial strain, designated DY2–5T, was isolated from surface sediment of Pacific Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCFZ). Growth occurred at 0–37 °C (optimum 28 °C), pH 6.5–9.0 (optimum pH 7.0–7.5) and in the presence of 1–11 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 3–4 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the novel strain was most closely related to Celeribacter halophilus ZXM137T with 96.13 % sequence similarity, and had 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities in the range 93.89–95.87 % with other species of the genus Celeribacter. The dominant fatty acids were summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c) and C16 : 0. The polar lipids of strain DY2–5T comprised phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine and two unknown aminolipids. The major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone–10 (Q–10). The DNA G+C content of strain DY2–5T was 64.8 mol%. On the basis of the phenotypic, genotypic and physiological evidence, strain DY2–5T represents a novel species of the genus Celeribacter, for which the name Celeribacter manganoxidans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DY2–5T ( = JCM 19384T = KCTC 32473T).

Two novel strains, SL014B61AT and SL014B11A, were isolated from an oil-polluted saline soil from Gudao in the coastal Shengli Oilfield, eastern China. Cells of strains SL014B61AT and SL014B11A were motile, Gram-negative and rod-shaped. Growth occurred at NaCl concentrations of between 0 and 15 % and at temperatures of between 10 and 45 °C. Strain SL014B61AT had Q9 as the major respiratory quinone and C16 : 0 (21.2 %), C18 : 1ω9c (20.3 %), C16 : 1ω7c (7.3 %) and C16 : 1ω9c (6.4 %) as predominant fatty acids. The G+C content of the DNA was 57.9 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain SL014B61AT belonged to the genus Marinobacter in the class Gammaproteobacteria. Strain SL014B61AT showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Marinobacter bryozoorum (97.9 %) and showed 97.8 % sequence similarity to Marinobacter lipolyticus. DNA–DNA relatedness to the reference strains Marinobacter bryozoorum and Marinobacter lipolyticus was 35.5 % and 33.8 %, respectively. On the basis of these data, it is proposed that strains SL014B61AT and SL014B11A represent a novel species, Marinobacter gudaonensis sp. nov. The type strain is strain SL014B61AT (=DSM 18066T=LMG 23509T=CGMCC 1.6294T).

A yellow-pigmented, Gram-staining-negative, non-motile, strictly aerobic and rod-shaped bacterium, designated CS100T, was isolated from soil in Chungbuk, Korea. Phylogenetic analysis and comparative studies based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain CS100T belonged to the genus Flavobacterium in the family Flavobacteriaceae. Strain CS100T showed the highest sequence similarities to Flavobacterium glaciei JCM 13953T (97.6 %) and Flavobacterium johnsoniae KACC 11410T (97.1 %). Sequence similarity to other members of the genus Flavobacterium was 91.5–97.0 %. Growth occurred at 4–30 °C, at pH 5.0–9.0 and in the presence of 0–2 % (w/v) NaCl. Flexirubin-type pigments were produced. Menaquinone-6 (MK-6) was the major respiratory quinone and the major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (17.3 %), summed feature 3 (comprising iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c, 15.5 %) and C16 : 0 (11.8 %). The DNA G+C content was 36.4 mol%. Strain CS100T hydrolysed skimmed milk and gelatin, but not chitin or pectin, and showed oxidase and catalase activities. DNA–DNA relatedness was 3.0 % with F. glaciei JCM 13953T and 11.5 % with F. johnsoniae KACC 11410T. On the basis of the evidence from this study, strain CS100T represents a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium, for which the name Flavobacterium chungbukense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CS100T ( = KACC 15048T = JCM 17386T).

A Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, yellow-pigmented rod, designated DK69T, was isolated from soil collected from the waste liquid treatment facility of Bafeng Pharmaceutical Company in the city of Enshi, Hubei Province, China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences placed strain DK69T in the genus Flavobacterium of the family Flavobacteriaceae . The highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities were found with Flavobacterium cauense R2A-7T (96.9 %), Flavobacterium saliperosum AS 1.3801T (96.3 %) and Flavobacterium suncheonense GH29-5T (95.7 %). The major fatty acids (≥5 %) were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 1ω9c, C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminolipid and one unidentified lipid. The major respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6. The genomic DNA G+C content was 34.4 mol%. Strain DK69T represents a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium , for which the name Flavobacterium enshiense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DK69T ( = CCTCC AB 2011144T  = KCTC 23775T). Emended descriptions of the genus Flavobacterium and Flavobacterium cauense , Flavobacterium saliperosum and Flavobacterium suncheonense are also proposed.

A novel aerobic, chemoheterotrophic bacterium, strain YO-36T, isolated from the rhizoplane of an aquatic plant (a reed, Phragmites australis) inhabiting a freshwater lake in Japan, was morphologically, physiologically and phylogenetically characterized. Strain YO-36T was Gram-negative and ovoid to rod-shaped, and formed pinkish hard colonies on agar plates. Strain YO-36T grew at 20–40 °C with optimum growth at 30–35 °C, whilst no growth was observed at 15 °C or 45 °C. The pH range for growth was 5.5–8.5 with an optimum at pH 6.5. Strain YO-36T utilized a limited range of substrates, such as sucrose, gentiobiose, pectin, gellan gum and xanthan gum. The strain contained C16 : 0, C16 : 1, C14 : 0 and C15 : 0 as the major cellular fatty acids and menaquinone-12 as the respiratory quinone. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 62.4 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain YO-36T belonged to the candidate phylum OP10 comprised solely of environmental 16S rRNA gene clone sequences except for two strains, P488 and T49 isolated from geothermal soil in New Zealand; strain YO-36T showed less than 80 % sequence similarity to strains P488 and T47. Based on the phylogetic and phenotypic findings, a new genus and species, Armatimonas rosea gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed for the isolate (type strain YO-36T  = NBRC 105658T  = DSM 23562T). In addition, a new bacterial phylum named Armatimonadetes phyl. nov. is proposed for the candidate phylum OP10 represented by A. rosea gen. nov., sp. nov. and Armatimonadaceae fam. nov., Armatimonadales ord. nov., and Armatimonadia classis nov.

A novel bacterium, designated strain F051-1T, isolated from a seawater sample collected from the coast at Damupo beach in Pohang, Korea, was investigated in a polyphasic taxonomic study. Cells were yellow-pigmented, strictly aerobic, Gram-staining-negative and rod-shaped. The temperature, pH and NaCl ranges for growth were 4–30 °C, pH 6.0–9.0 and 1.0–6.0 % (w/v), respectively. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain F051-1T belongs to the genus Psychroserpens in the family Flavobacteriaceae . Its closest relatives were Psychroserpens burtonensis ACAM 188T (96.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Psychroserpens mesophilus KOPRI 13649T (95.7 %). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G and anteiso-C15 : 0. The polar lipid profile consisted of a mixture of phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids, one unidentified phospholipid and eight unidentified lipids. The major respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6 and the genomic DNA G+C content of the strain was 33.5 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genotypic data, strain F051-1T represents a novel species within the genus Psychroserpens , for which the name Psychroserpens damuponensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is F051-1T ( = KCTC 23539T  = JCM 17632T).

A novel Gram-stain-positive, white-pigmented, non-motile, non-sporulating, catalase- and oxidase-positive, strictly aerobic coccus, designated strain ZXM223T, was isolated from a seawater sample collected from the coast of Qingdao, PR China, during a green algal bloom. It grew at pH 6.0–10.5 and 0–25.0 % (w/v) NaCl, with optimum growth at pH 8.5 and 3.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Growth occurred at 16–42 °C (optimum at 28 °C). The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0. Menaquinone 6 (MK-6) was the major respiratory quinone. The polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, three unidentified phospholipids and two unknown glycolipids. The peptidoglycan type was l-Lys–Gly5–6. The genomic DNA G+C content was 43.5 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence placed strain ZXM223T within the genus Salinicoccus, with sequence similarity of 92.2–97.1 % between ZXM223T and the type strains of this genus. The closest relatives were Salinicoccus kunmingensis YIM Y15T, ‘S. salitudinis’ YIM-C678 and S. alkaliphilus T8T. The DNA–DNA relatedness between strain ZXM223T and S. kunmingensis CGMCC 1.6302T and ‘S. salitudinis’ CGMCC 1.6299 ( = YIM-C678) was 37±3 and 30±2 %, respectively. The phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic characteristics and low DNA–DNA relatedness support the proposal of a novel species of the genus Salinicoccus, Salinicoccus qingdaonensis sp. nov., with the type strain ZXM223T ( = LMG 24855T  = CGMCC 1.8895T).

A novel marine, Gram-staining-negative, yellow-pigmented, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated CNU004T, was isolated from a seawater sample collected on the coastline of Jeju Island, South Korea. The strain was strictly aerobic, non-flagellated, non-gliding and oxidase- and catalase-positive. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain CNU004T belongs to a distinct lineage in the family Flavobacteriaceae. Strain CNU004T exhibited levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 93.8–93.9 % to its nearest phylogenetic neighbours, members of the genera Gaetbulibacter, Yeosuana and Algibacter. The new isolate required sea salts or artificial seawater for growth. The optimum ranges of temperature and pH for growth were 30–35 °C and pH 7.0–8.0. The DNA G+C content of strain CNU004T was 37.7 mol%. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH. Menaquinone-6 was the major respiratory quinone. Zeaxanthin was the major carotenoid pigment produced, and flexirubin-type pigments were not produced. Strain CNU004T was able to degrade starch and agar. Based on its phenotypic and genotypic characteristics and on the phylogenetic evidence presented, strain CNU004T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the family Flavobacteriaceae, for which the name Hyunsoonleella jejuensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Hyunsoonleella jejuensis sp. nov. is CNU004T (=KCTC 22242T =DSM 21035T).
