The objective of this study was to determine the coumarin content of ground cinnamon purchased from retail markets in the Czech Republic. No sample was labelled with information on the botanical source, but, in some cases, the countries of origin were specified. For comparison, a single cinnamon sample imported directly from a plantation in Sri Lanka that came fromCinnamomum verumwas analyzed. Results from 60 ground cinnamon samples comprising twelve brands confirmed a high content of coumarin, with mean levels ranging from 2 650 to 7 017 mg · kg−1. The high coumarin content confirmed that these cinnamon samples obtained from cassia cinnamon were in contrast to the sample from Sri Lanka, which was coumarin-free.

Brand personality is recognized as a key platform for developing a loyal customer base for service organizations. When it comes to the modern retail sector, self-service supermarkets are highly concerned about branding strategies for attracting customers to their stores. However, the impacts of brand personality of supermarkets can vary in different cross-cultural contexts. Hence, in this study, researchers examined this issue by selecting two samples: from Sri Lanka and from the Czech Republic, with the purpose of comparing the impact of brand personality on customer behavioral intentions in two different cultural contexts. For the first sample, 150 regular shoppers were randomly selected in Colombo (Sri Lanka), and data was collected from a researcher administrated questionnaire. The second sample was drawn from Zlin, (the Czech Republic) where data was collected from 120 customers via using a self-administrated questionnaire. Principle component analysis and multiple regressions were used for data analysis and for testing hypotheses. This paper concludes by explaining the implications for modern retailers in designing their branding strategies, and by comparing which aspects of brand personalities of supermarkets are important in two different contexts.

The study objectives were to test ready-to-eat food from the retail market in the Czech Republic for the presence of L. monocytogenes and, based on typing methods, to investigate probable causes of contamination. A total 2180 samples of ready-to-eat food (meat, dairy, fish, delicatessen and confectionery products and fresh fruit and vegetables) were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. L. monocytogenes isolates were characterised by serotyping and macrorestriction analysis after digestion with the restriction enzyme AscI. In 2004–2008 L. monocytogenes was most often detected in delicatessen (5.2%), meat (3.4%) and dairy products (1.8%). In the analysed samples, L. monocytogenes was mostly present at counts lower than 102 CFU/g. Only in 2004, higher counts of L. monocytogenes were found in two heat-processed meat products (103 CFU/g). The obtained macrorestriction patterns helped in tracing the source of contamination and routes of the spread of L. monocytogenes in the manufacturing plant and retail market.
