ABSTRACTThe genus Corythomantis currently comprises a single species, Corythomantis greeningi, a hylid widely distributed in xerophilic and subhumid morphoclimatic regions of Brazil, mainly in the Northeast region. Recently the external morphology, internal oral anatomy, and chondrocranium of C. greeningi tadpoles were described from specimens collected in the state of Bahia, however, we observed some differences in morphology of individuals from the state of Piauí, northeastern Brazil. The tadpoles were collected during the 2019 rainy season and 14 individuals were used to describe and compare the larval characters. We observed differences in external, internal oral and chondrocranial morphology in relation to specimens previously described, especially in oral disc, number and shape of oral cavity papillae, and some chondrocranium structures, as: cartilago suprarostralis, cornua trabeculae, fontanella frontoparietalis, cartilago orbitalis e planum hypobranchiale. Our results point to the occurrence of heterochrony in C. greeningi, but we do not rule out the possibility that tadpoles belong to different species. Further studies involving a greater number of tadpoles at different stages, combined with genetic, acoustic, and morphological factors of adult specimens may establish the variation degree of C. greeningi in different regions of northeastern Brazil.RESUMOO gênero Corythomantis compreende atualmente uma única espécie, Corythomantis greeningi, um hilídeo amplamente distribuído nas regiões morfoclimáticas xerofílicas e subúmidas do Brasil, principalmente na região Nordeste. Recentimente foram descritas a morfologia externa, anatomia oral interna e condrocrânio do girino de C. greeningi a partir de espécimes coletados no estado da Bahia, no entanto, observamos algumas diferenças na morfologia dos indivíduos coletados na região norte do estado do Piauí, Nordeste do Brasil. Os girinos foram coletados durante o período chuvoso de 2019 e 14 indivíduos foram utilizados para descrição e comparação dos caracteres larvais. Observamos diferenças na morfologia externa, oral interna e no condrocranio do girino em relação ao descrito anteriormente, sobretudo no disco oral, no número e formato de papilas cavidade oral e algumas estruturas do condrocrânio, como: cartilago suprarostralis, cornua trabeculae, fontanella frontoparietalis, cartilago orbitalis e planum hypobranchiale. Nossos resultados apontam a ocorrência de heterocronia em C. greeningi, porém não descartamos a possibilidade dos girinos pertencerem a espécies diferentes. Estudos futuros envolvendo uma maior área de distribuição e maior número de indivíduos em estágios diferentes, aliados a fatores genéticos, acústico e morfológicos dos espécimes adultos poderão estabelecer o grau de variação de C. greeningi em diferentes regiões do Nordeste brasileiro.

Abstract The Conde municipality is located in the northern coast of the state of Bahia (NC), northeastern Brazil, and is part of the Atlantic Tropical domain. The anuran fauna of the northern portion of the NC is still poorly known if compared to the southern portion. The Restinga is one of the predominant environments of the coastal plains of the NC and it is characterized essentially by presenting sandy soil covered by herbaceous and shrubby vegetation. The objective of this study was to determine the anuran species composition and diversity for the Restinga of the Conde municipality. Sampling was carried out at night by active search over four periods of five consecutive days each, two over the 'main rainy season' and two in a 'lesser rainy season', using 14 sample units (SUs) and five extra sample plots (EPs). We calculated dominance and species diversity using the Berger-Parker and Shannon-Wiener H' indices, respectively. We used accumulation curves and the Jackknife 1 estimator to estimate anuran species richness, considering only the data obtained from the SUs. We recorded 713 anuran specimens distributed within 33 species, 13 genera and five families (Bufonidae, Craugastoridae, Hylidae, Leptodactylidae and Microhylidae). The Hylidae and Leptodactylidae families had the highest species richness. Considering only the SUs (Jackknife 1 estimator in brackets), we recorded 28 species in the study area (33.9 ± 2.3), 13 in Shrubby Vegetation Zones - SVZ (20.8 ± 2.9) and 25 in Freshwater Wetland Zones - FWZ (28.9 ± 1.9). The abundance and species diversity of the FWZ (n = 638 specimens; H'= 2.4) were higher than those recorded for the SVZ (n = 52 specimens; H' = 1.9). The SVZ and FWZ showed distinct dominant species, wherein Pristimantis paulodutrai was the dominant species in SVZ and Scinax fuscomarginatus in FWZ. The Restinga of the Conde municipality stands out as the one with the highest anuran species richness already recorded considering only SVZ and FWZ. Moreover, its anuran species composition represented 55% of the anuran species known for the NC and included taxa common to three different morphoclimatic domains (Tropical Atlantic, Cerrado and Caatinga).

A list of liverworts from Alagoas State was compiled and is presented here. The list is based on catalogues and previous papers as well as the results of an unpublished survey carried out at the Murici Ecological Station (EsEc), an important protected area of the Brazilian Northeast (9º11'05" - 9º16'48"S; 35º45'20" - 35º55'12"W). One-hundred and sixteen liverworts have been recorded for the state of Alagoas, of which 106 occur at EsEc Murici. Seventy-eight are new occurrences for Alagoas, and seven of these are also new occurrences for northeastern Brazil. Data on geographic distribution in Brazil and worldwide is given here, in addition to ecological and taxonomic comments on the species that are new occurrences for the Northeast region.

The reproductive ecology of Ameivula ocellifera was studied from September 2009 to August 2010 in a coastal area of the state of Ceará, Brazil. Females reproduced continuously throughout the year, with a peak at the end of the rainy season. Even though there was a predominance of pre-reproductive individuals in the sample, gonadal activity of males peaked synchronously to female reproduction. Mean clutch size was 1.98 ± 0.56 and positively associated with female body size, while mean egg volume was 510.54 ± 84.29 mm3 and unrelated to female body size. We did not find any association between clutch size and average egg volume.

We report the first record of Voyria caerulea from the state of Maranhão, northeastern Brazil. A fertile specimen was collected in a gallery forest during the rainy season, within the boundaries of the municipality of São Raimundo das Mangabeiras. This find contributes to the knowledge on the micoheterotrophic flora of Maranhão and expands the geographic distribution of this species in Brazil. We also present a taxonomic description, illustrations, an occurrence map of the newly found population, and an identification key for all the species of Voyria that occur in Maranhão.

There are 45 species currently described for the genus Physalaemus that are allocated into seven morphological groupsand 29 of them have their tadpoles described, of which 12 have information on their internal oral anatomy. In order to helpresolving taxonomic and systematic problems, tadpoles from this genus had their external and internal oral morphologiesstudied, described and compared. During this study, it was noticed that different terms are sometimes used to refer to thesame character and a standardized nomenclature is suggested. This study is divided into two parts. First, we describe theoral cavity anatomy of the tadpoles of Physalaemus aguirrei, P. atlanticus, P. camacan, P. cicada, P. gracilis, P. irroratus,P. maximus, P. rupestris, P. signifer and P. soaresi. Second, we present a comparison among tadpoles of these ten speciesplus the tadpoles of P. albifrons, P. angrensis, P. centralis, P. crombiei, P. cuvieri, P. henselii, P. jordanensis, P. marmora-tus, P. moreirae and P. spiniger. This study adds information on tadpoles of the genus Physalaemus that corroborates someof the species groups proposed for adult specimens, but also shows that although they have a typical pond-living externalmorphology, being very similar to one another, the oral disc and the internal oral morphologies present many features with interspecific variation that may be used to identify the specimens.

The state of Sergipe, located in the Northeast Region of Brazil, covers an area of 21,994 km² and is the smallest state in the country. The vegetation of this region is predominantly caatinga, but there are also mangroves, dunes, restinga, fragments of original Atlantic Forest (which are intermingled with pastures, secondary growth, and agricultural land) and cerrado. During intensive fieldwork in Sergipe, we observed various Orchidaceae species that had not been recorded for the state, which made it necessary to update the list of species for this region. Within the state, the family is represented by 63 species and 34 genera, of which Habenaria (10 spp.) Epidendrum (4 spp.) and Encyclia (4 spp.) are highlights. Orchidaceae species from this region are generally terrestrial and occur in grasslands (59%, 37 of 63 spp.). The remaining species are epiphytes (21 spp.) and hemiepiphytes (3 spp.). The majority of the species flower at the beginning of the rainy season. Of the 61 species that were recorded during this study, 34 species are new records for the state of Sergipe. This work includes a list of the species of Orchidaceae from Sergipe, and provides data about the phenology and habitat for each taxon.

Abstract Mangrove swamps and forests cover over 137,000 km2 distributed latitudinally among subtropical zones, 7% of which are in Brazil, with a greater density in the country’s northernmost region. Considering that the community of Myxomycetes recorded for this environment is hardly known, three areas located in the state of Maranhão were investigated. Two field trips were conducted, one at the beginning of the rainy season and another during the dry season. In each area, two plots (125 m2) equidistant 100 m apart from each other were surveyed. In these areas, standing dead tree trunks and dead branches still attached to the mother plant that were above the tideline, were examined. On these same occasions, samples of the aerial litter and from the cortex of living trees (Rhizophora) were collected for the preparation of moist chambers cultures. Twenty-one specimens were obtained from field and moist chambers, belonging to 11 species, distributed in nine genera and five families. Seven species are new records from Maranhão. There was a predominance of r-strategist (73%) over K-strategist (27%) species. Cribraria violacea, Comatricha tenerrima, Echinostelium minutum, and Fuligo septica are new worldwide records from mangrove environments, and Oligonema flavidum is reported for the first time from Brazil.

Abstract We conducted a taxonomic survey of the Bignoniaceae from the “Fazenda Aba,” located at the municipality of Passagem, within the state of Paraiba (Northeastern Brazil). This inventory was based on material collected during monthly field expeditions between 2014 and 2017. For all collected species, we provide descriptions, information on the distribution, taxonomic comments, an identification key, illustrations, and photos. We recorded nine species distributed in six genera. The most representative genus is Tanaecium with three species, followed by Anemopaegma, with two species. The other four genera, Dolichandra, Fridericia, Handroanthus, and Tabebuia are represented by a single species each.

The external morphology and oral disc of the tadpole of Leptodactylus pustulatus Peters, 1870, are described and illustrated for Gosner stage 39. The internal oral anatomy was analyzed with SEM at Gosner stage 36 whereas chondrocranial anatomy is reported for Gosner stage 35. The overall characteristics do not depart from those known for the genus Leptodactylus and they particularly agree for those of the melanonotus species group. The labial tooth row formula is 2(2)/3. Observations are presented that suggest that L. pustulatus engages in larval parental care.
