We consider a compactification of extra dimensions and numerically calculate Casimir energy which is provided by the mass of Kaluza–Klein modes. For the extra space we consider a torus with shape moduli and show that the corresponding vacuum energy is represented as a function of the moduli parameter of the extra dimensions. By assuming that the Casimir energy may be identified with cosmological constant, we evaluate the size of extra dimensions in terms of the recent data given by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) measurement and the supernovae observations. We suggest that the observed cosmological constant may probe the shape moduli of the extra space by the study of the Casimir energy of the compactified extra dimensions.

It is pointed out in a class of models with large extra dimensions that the cross-section of processes with virtual Kaluza–Klein graviton exchanges becomes either much smaller or much larger by many orders of magnitude than what is expected from that of the on-shell production of the Kaluza–Klein gravitons. We demonstrate how the problem arises using a toy model. The cause of this new problem lies in the fact that we do not have momentum conservation in the extra dimensions. To search for the signal of the large extra dimensions with high energy collider experiments, we need more care in interpreting the earlier results on the cross-sections of these processes.

We present arguments that show why it is difficult to see rich extra dimensions in the universe. Conditions are found where significant size and variation of the extra dimensions in a Kaluza–Klein compactification lead to a black hole in the lower-dimensional theory. The idea is based on the hoop conjecture concerning black hole existence, as well as on the observation that dimensional reduction on macroscopically large, twisted, or highly dynamical extra dimensions contributes positively to the energy density in the lower-dimensional theory and can induce gravitational collapse. A threshold for the size is postulated on the order of [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]m, whereby extra dimensions of length above this level must lie inside black holes, thus cloaking them from the view of outside observers. The threshold depends on the size of the universe, leading to speculation that in the early stages of evolution truly macroscopic and large extra dimensions would have been visible.

A numerical study of static, spherically symmetric monopole solutions coupled to the dilaton field, inspired by the Kaluza–Klein theory with large extra dimensions is presented. The generalised Prasad?Sommerfield solution is obtained. We show that the monopole may also have the dilaton cloud configurations.

We discuss the phenomenological consequences of theories which describe sterile neutrinos in large extra dimensions, in the so-called bulk. We briefly outline how the cumulative non-decoupling effect due to the tower of Kaluza-Klein singlet neutrinos may equivalently be described by a higher-dimensional effective theory with original order-unity Yukawa couplings. Based on this cumulative phenomenon, we obtain strong constraints on the fundamental quantum gravity scale and/or on the higher-dimensional Yukawa couplings.

We investigate the possible large extra dimensions (LED) effects induced by the Kaluza–Klein (KK) gravitons up to the QCD next-to-leading order (NLO) on ZZW production at the large hadron collider (LHC). The integrated cross-sections and some kinematic distributions are presented in both the Standard Model (SM) and the LED model. The numerical results demonstrate that the NLO QCD corrections are sizeable and remarkably reduce the leading order (LO) LED effect depending strongly on the phase space. The NLO LED relative discrepancies of the total cross-section could become sizable for the ZZW production, if we apply proper event selection criteria. We find that the LO result overestimates the LED effect and is insufficient to provide a believable theoretical prediction.
