BACKGROUND During a global pandemic, it is critical to rapidly deploy a psychological intervention to support the mental health and resilience of highly affected individuals and communities. OBJECTIVE This is the impetus behind the development and implementation of the Pandemic Acceptance and Commitment to Empowerment Response (PACER) Training, an online blended-skills building intervention to increase the resilience and wellbeing of participants while promoting their individual and collective empowerment and capacity-building. METHODS Based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and social justice-based Group Empowerment Psychoeducation (GEP), we developed the Acceptance and Commitment to Empowerment (ACE) model to enhance psychological resilience and collective empowerment. PACER program consists of six online interactive self-guided modules complemented by six weekly 90 minutes facilitator-led video-conference group sessions. RESULTS As of August 2021, a total of 325 participants have enrolled in the PACER program. Participants include frontline healthcare providers and Chinese Canadian community members. CONCLUSIONS The PACER program is an innovative intervention program with the potential for increasing psychological resilience and collective empowerment while reducing mental distress during the pandemic.

The arousal-cognition-expression (ACE) model of emotion suggests that all emotions have the capacity to be pleasing to God, displeasing to God, and/or morally neutral. Therefore, all emotions are potentially appropriate for the Christian. According to the ACE model, what determines the moral direction of an emotion, and thus the appropriateness of an emotion for a Christian, is factors in the cognitive and expressive domains. The ACE model originally evolved out of research with anger and this paper reports an experimental study with anger that confirms some of the earlier descriptive findings that provided a foundation for the model. In a second study, testing the generality of the model, the ACE model is applied to the emotion of love. In conclusion, it is also suggested that the ACE model may provide a general framework for understanding several other Christian perspectives on emotion.

Natural gas hydrate has been widely of concern due to its great potential in application to address problems including gas storage, transmission, separation techniques, and also as energy resource. Accurate prediction of hydrate formation phase equilibrium conditions is essential for the optimized design during natural gas production, processing, and transportation. In this study, a novel graphical alternating conditional expectation (ACE) algorithm was proposed to predict hydrate formation phase equilibrium conditions for sweet and sour natural gases. The accuracy and performance of the presented ACE model were evaluated using 1055 data points (688, 249, and 118 data points for sweet natural gas, CO2-CH4, and H2S-CO2-CH4 systems, respectively) collected from literature. Meanwhile, a comparative study was conducted between the ACE model and commonly used correlations, including thirteen models for sweet natural gases, three models for CO2-CH4 binary system, and seven thermodynamic models for H2S-CO2-CH4 ternary system. The obtained results indicated that the proposed ACE model produces the best results in prediction of hydrate phase equilibrium temperature for sweet natural gases and pressure for CO2-CH4 system with average absolute relative deviation (AARD) of 0.134% and 2.75%, respectively. The proposed quick and explicit ACE model also provides a better performance in prediction of hydrate phase equilibrium pressure for H2S-CO2-CH4 ternary systems with AARD=5.20% compared with seven thermodynamic methods considered in this work, except for CPA/Electrolyte/Chen–Guo combined model (AARD=4.45%).

Abstract Background: As the share of the older population is growing worldwide, health systems in developing countries need a policy shift to address the challenge of the optimization of healthcare across age groups. Many older people in resource-limited countries will seek specific care due to multimorbidity and frailty, as the burden of non-communicable diseases is getting heavier. Methods: Over a one-year period, we trained healthcare workers and developed new procedures of care in the geriatric unit of the Yaoundé Central Hospital in Cameroon, using the Acute Care for Elders (ACE) model. This model of care in Geriatrics is based on a patient-centered approach and is focused on preventing functional decline in acutely ill older patients. Results: During the implementation of the ACE model, 202 patients were hospitalized in the unit, of whom 60.9% (n=123) were female; the mean (SD) age was 79.3 (8.8) years. A multidisciplinary team was brought together, including a geriatrician, two general practitioners, two geriatric nurses, two advanced practice nurses and a social worker. After a thorough examination of the care procedures, nurses were given complementary missions, such as assessing functional status and providing therapeutic education to the patients and their family members. All hospitalized and ambulatory patients were offered a comprehensive geriatric assessment at the outpatient clinic. Conclusion: It was possible to establish a comprehensive model of care for older patients in our hospital with few trained personnel. Further actions are needed to improve the care of older people in resource-limited settings.
