Purpose This paper aims to study the short take-off characteristics and longitudinal controllability of FanWing. As a new structural plane, it has achieved great success at the air shows, but the existing literature is mostly on feasibility and prototype study while little on short take-off performance analysis and controllability. Thus, the paper will do some research on those two aspects. Design/methodology/approach This paper focuses on a certain type of a 3.5 kg FanWing and builds the longitudinal model based on its structure characteristics and operation principle. Its take-off process is simulated and the longitudinal control law is designed. Findings The short take-off performance and the large load characteristic are verified. To attain a better short take-off performance, several factors that influence the take-off distance are researched, and the optimal no-load take-off distance 5 m is obtained when the elevator deflection angle is −30°, the center of gravity is 0.42 m and the cross-flow fan rotation speed is 2500 r/min. The longitudinal controllability is verified through simulation. And without variable cross-flow fan rotation speed control, the longitudinal control of FanWing is the same to that of the conventional aircraft. Practical implications The presented efforts provide markers for designing the fan wing aircraft that would have better performances. And the control of FanWing is similar to that of a conventional airplane. Originality/value It is proved that FanWing can offer a better take-off performance through reasonable configuration. The paper also offers a useful reference on the control of FanWing.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to investigate the problem of fault accommodation in bilinear dynamic systems. Design/methodology/approach – Solution to this problem is related to constructing the control law which provides full decoupling with respect to the fault effects. The so-called logic-dynamic approach will be used to solve this problem. The main steps of this approach are: replacing the initial bilinear system by certain linear one, solving the problem under consideration for this linear system by well-known linear methods with some restrictions, taking into account the bilinear term to correct the obtained linear solution. Findings – Existing conditions of the fault accommodation problem in a form of rank equalities and inequalities are formulated. Calculating relations for the control law and the auxiliary systems are given. Practical implications – The suggested method allows determining such a control law that preserves the main performances of the system in the faulty case, while the minor performances may degrade. Originality/value – The main advantage of the logic-dynamic approach is a possibility to solve the problem of fault accommodation for nonlinear systems by linear methods without decreasing the main properties of the obtained solution.

Purpose The purpose of the paper is to design a nonlinear dynamic inversion (NDI) based robust fault-tolerant control (FTC) for aircraft longitudinal dynamics subject to system nonlinearities, aerodynamic parametric variations, external wind disturbances and fault/failure in actuator. Design/methodology/approach An uncertainty and disturbance estimator (UDE) technique is used to provide estimate of total disturbance enabling its rejection and thereby achieving robustness to the proposed NDI controller. As needed in the NDI design, the successive derivatives of the output are obtained through an UDE robustified observer making the design implementable. Further, a control allocation scheme consigns control command from primary actuator to the secondary one in the event of fault/failure in the primary actuator. Findings The robustness is achieved against the perturbations mentioned above in the presence of actuator fault/failure. Practical implications Lyapunov analysis proves practical stability of the controller–observer structure. The efficacy and superiority of the proposed design has been demonstrated through Monte-Carlo simulation. Originality/value Unlike in many FTC designs, robustness is provided against system nonlinearities, aerodynamic parametric variations, external wind disturbances and sinusoidal input disturbance using a single control law which caters for fault-free, as well as faulty actuator scenario.

FanWing has been taken to the visual field because of its performance combination of fixed-wing aircraft and helicopter. Its flight mode is currently limited mainly by a remote control, while the research of automated flight control is on the rise. The fan wing could offer lift, thrust, and the additional pitch moment for longitudinal control. At the same time, the roll moment and the yaw moment can be generated by the differential rotation of the cross-flow fan to realize the lateral control. It provides the possibility for its emergency flight control when the aerodynamic control becomes inefficient at a low speed. The difficulties in designing the emergency control system in both the longitudinal and lateral controls are analyzed. And it emphasizes the importance of selecting its center of gravity and the emergency control method of longitudinal control in engineering. The simulation results show that as an emergency flight control system, fan wing control is feasible. The study of the fan wing control will provide a reference solution for its further engineering applications.

Purpose Denim, a common fade fabric, can present different degrees of fade under different washing conditions. The phenomenon is similar to the washing efficiency. This study aims to discuss the relationship between impact factors and washing efficiency as well as the color fastness. Design/methodology/approach JMP software was used to design different experiments and 40 experimental groups were obtained. Then Statistical Package for the Social Sciences was used to analyze the results about washing efficiency and chromatic aberration. Findings Results showed that washing temperature, washing time and rotation speed have an effect on color fastness after washing in turn. In a certain range, when washing temperature, washing time or rotation speed increases, color fastness gradually increases as well. These three washing parameters work on washing efficiency as well. After setting and analyzing the mathematical model, the R² between the three washing parameters and washing efficiency is 0.855 and the R² between the three washing parameters and the post-wash chromatic is 0.849. There is a correlation between “Washing Efficiency of Sebum RM (P)” and “Post-wash Chromatic aberration (Q)”. Practical implications Denim could be used in some tests in laboratories instead of sebum standard stain cloth. Originality/value This paper provides an indirect research and feasible method for exploring a new object instead of the standard pollution cloth in the test of related textile study in the future.

PurposeIn the community of visual tracking or object tracking, discriminatively learned correlation filter (DCF) has gained more importance. When it comes to speed, DCF gives the best performance. The main objective of this study is to anticipate the object visually. For tracking the object visually, the authors proposed a new model based on the convolutional regression technique. Features like HOG & Harris are used for the process of feature extraction. The proposed method will give the best results when compared to other existing methods.Design/methodology/approachThis paper introduces the concept and research status of tracks; later the authors focus on the representative applications of deep learning in visual tracking.FindingsBetter tracking algorithms are not mentioned in the existing method.Research limitations/implicationsVisual tracking is the ability to control eye movements using the oculomotor system (vision and eye muscles working together). Visual tracking plays an important role when it comes to identifying an object and matching it with the database images. In visual tracking, deep learning has achieved great success.Practical implicationsThe authors implement the multiple tracking methods, for better tracking purpose.Originality/valueThe main theme of this paper is to review the state-of-the-art tracking methods depending on deep learning. First, we introduce the visual tracking that is carried out manually, and secondly, we studied different existing methods of visual tracking based on deep learning. For every paper, we explained the analysis and drawbacks of that tracking method. This paper introduces the concept and research status of tracks, later we focus on the representative applications of deep learning in visual tracking.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand in-depth how consumers create value in their lives using WhatsApp, the leading mobile instant messaging (MIM) application. Design/methodology/approach The study adopts the perspective of customer-dominant logic (CDL) and uses a qualitative multimethod design involving 3 focus groups and 25 subsequent in-depth interviews. The research setting was Ecuador, a Latin American country. Findings Analysis and interpretation of the participants’ stories made it possible to identify and understand the creation of four types of value: maintaining and strengthening relationships; improving role performance; emotional support; and entertainment and fun. In addition, the present study proposes a conceptual model of consumer value creation as it applies to MIM. Practical implications Understanding the way consumers create value in their lives using MIM is important not only for organizations that offer MIM applications, but also for those companies that develop other applications for mobile phones or for those who wish to use MIM as an electronic word-of-mouth vehicle. Originality/value The current study is one of the first to address the topic of consumer behavior in the use of technologies from the perspective of CDL; this perspective enables an integrated qualitative vision of value creation in which the consumer is the protagonist.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to understand data management challenges in e-maintenance systems from a holistically viewpoint through summarizing the earlier scattered research in the field, and second, to present a conceptual approach for addressing these challenges in practice. Design/methodology/approach The study is realized as a combination of a literature review and by the means of analyzing the practices on an industry leader in manufacturing and maintenance services. Findings This research provides a general understanding over data management challenges in e-maintenance and summarizes their associated proposed solutions. In addition, this paper lists and exemplifies different types and sources of data which can be collected in e-maintenance, across different organizational levels. Analyzing the data management practices of an e-maintenance industry leader provides a conceptual approach to address identified challenges in practice. Research limitations/implications Since this paper is based on studying the practices of a single company, it might be limited to generalize the results. Future research topics can focus on each of mentioned data management challenges and also validate the applicability of presented model in other companies and industries. Practical implications Understanding the e-maintenance-related challenges helps maintenance managers and other involved stakeholders in e-maintenance systems to better solve the challenges. Originality/value The so-far literature on e-maintenance has been studied with narrow focus to data and data management in e-maintenance appears as one of the less studied topics in the literature. This research paper contributes to e-maintenance by highlighting the deficiencies of the discussion surrounding the perspectives of data management in e-maintenance by studying all common data management challenges and listing different types of data which need to be acquired in e-maintenance systems.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore insights methodology and technology by using behavioral to create a mind-set change in the way people work, especially in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). Design/methodology/approach The approach is to examine how AI is driving workplace change, introduce the idea that most organizations have untapped analytics, add the idea of what we know future work will look like and look at how greater, data-driven human behavioral insights will help prepare future human-to-human work and inform people’s work with and alongside AI. Findings Human (behavioral) intelligence will be an increasingly crucial part of behaviorally smart organizations, from hiring to placement to adaptation to team building, compliance and more. These human capability insights will, among other things, better prepare people and organizations for changing work roles, including working with and alongside AI and similar tech innovation. Research limitations/implications No doubt researchers across the private, public and nonprofit sectors will want to further study the nexus of human capability, behavioral insights technology and AI, but it is clear that such work is already underway and can prove even more valuable if adopted on a broader, deeper level. Practical implications Much “people data” inside organizations is currently not being harvested. Validated, scalable processes exist to mine that data and leverage it to help organizations of all types and sizes be ready for the future, particularly in regard to the marriage of human capability and AI. Social implications In terms of human capability and AI, individuals, teams, organizations, customers and other stakeholders will all benefit. The investment of time and other resources is minimal, but must include C-suite buy in. Originality/value Much exists on the softer aspects of the marriage of human capability and AI and other workplace advancements. What has been lacking – until now – is a 1) practical, 2) validated and 3) scalable behavioral insights tech form that quantifiably informs how people and AI will work in the future, especially side by side.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the experiences of working women in a male-dominated country (Morocco) and unveil the unique challenges and everyday gender-bias they face, the psychological impact of the perceived gender-bias and, finally, identify a variety of coping strategies or combatting mechanisms affecting their motivation and retention in the workplace. Design/methodology/approach Empirical evidence was obtained using a qualitative research method. The Critical Incident Technique (CIT) was used to collect incidents recalled by women in the select institution reflecting their perceptions of their managers’ ineffective behaviors towards them and the impact of these behaviors. The critical incidents were inductively coded, and behavioral statements were derived from the coded data. Findings The qualitative data analysis led them to structure the data according to two theme clusters: The perceived gender-bias behaviors (Covert and evident personal and organizational behaviors) and Psychological impacts resulting from the perceived bias. These behavioral practices included abusive behaviors, unfair treatment, bias and lack of recognition. The psychological impact elements involved decreased productivity, depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. Practical implications Understanding these experiences can facilitate the identification of strategies geared towards the retention of women in the workforce, and Moroccan organizations can develop and implement strategies and policies that are geared towards eliminating gender-bias in the workplace and to retaining and motivating women who remain ambitious to work in male-dominated environments and cultures. Originality/value This paper provides evidence that sufficient organizational mechanisms to support women in male-dominated environments are still unavailable, leaving them to find the proper coping mechanisms to persevere and resist.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to develop a profile of whistleblowers and to determine whether whistleblowing legislation would encourage those individuals to bring to light some illegal or unethical behaviour that otherwise would remain in the shadows. Design/methodology/approach Having identified whistleblowing correlation, a survey was carried out in Cyprus of actual whistleblowers and could-have-been whistleblowers. Findings Males between 46 and55 years of age, regardless of whether they have dependents or hold senior positions in organizations are significantly more likely to blow the whistle. However, could-have-been whistleblowers did not go ahead because they felt that the authorities would not act on their information. Research limitations/implications Because of the sensitive nature of the research topic and the fact that only whistleblowers or intended whistleblowers could participate in the study, the sample size is limited as a result. This, in turn, limits both the number of respondents in each category (actual and intended) as well as constrains the statistical analysis that could be carried out on the data. Practical implications It remains to be seen whether EU Member States shall implement the European Directive 2019/1937 on the protection of persons who report breaches of Union Law, in its entirety by the due date, namely December 2021. Originality/value This study provides a literature review of whistleblowing and reports an original survey against the backdrop of the European Directive.
