Purpose This paper aims to introduce a novel 4D hyperchaotic fractional-order system which can produce one-to-four-wing hyperchaotic attractors. In the study of chaotic systems with variable-wing attractors, although some chaotic systems can generate one-to-four-wing attractors, none of them are hyperchaotic attractors, which is incomplete for the dynamic characteristics of chaotic systems. Design/methodology/approach A novel 4D fractional-order hyperchaotic system is proposed based on the classical three-dimensional Lü system. The complex and abundant dynamic behaviors of the fractional-order system are analyzed by phase diagrams, bifurcation diagrams and the corresponding Lyapunov exponents. In addition, SE and C0 algorithms are used to analyze the complexity of the fractional-order system. Then, the influence of order q on the system is also investigated. Finally, the circuit is implemented using physical components. Findings The most particular interest is that the system can generate one-to-four-wing hyperchaotic attractors with only one parameter variation. Then, the hardware circuit experimental results tally with the numerical simulations, which proves the validity and feasibility of the fractional-order hyperchaotic system. Besides, under different initial conditions, coexisting attractors can be obtained by changing the parameter d or the order q. Then, the complexity analysis of the system shows that the fractional-order chaotic system has higher complexity than the corresponding integer-order chaotic system. Originality/value The circuit structure of the fractional-order hyperchaotic system is simple and easy to implement, and one-to-four-wing hyperchaotic attractors can be observed in the circuit. To the best of the knowledge, this unique phenomenon has not been reported in any literature. It is of great reference value to analysis and circuit realization of fractional-order chaotic systems.

Systems with hidden attractors have been the hot research topic of recent years because of their striking features. Fractional-order systems with hidden attractors are newly introduced and barely investigated. In this paper, a new 4D fractional-order chaotic system with hidden attractors is proposed. The abundant and complex hidden dynamical behaviors are studied by nonlinear theory, numerical simulation, and circuit realization. As the main mode of electrical behavior in many neuroendocrine cells, bursting oscillations (BOs) exist in this system. This complicated phenomenon is seldom found in the chaotic systems, especially in the fractional-order chaotic systems without equilibrium points. With the view of practical application, the spectral entropy (SE) algorithm is chosen to estimate the complexity of this fractional-order system for selecting more appropriate parameters. Interestingly, there is a state variable correlated with offset boosting that can adjust the amplitude of the variable conveniently. In addition, the circuit of this fractional-order chaotic system is designed and verified by analog as well as hardware circuit. All the results are very consistent with those of numerical simulation.

Based on the integer-order memristive system that can generate two-scroll, three-scroll, and four-scroll chaotic attractors, in this paper, we found other phenomena that two kinds of three-scroll chaotic attractors coexist in this system with different initial conditions. Furthermore, we proposed a coexisting fractional-order system based on the three-scroll chaotic attractors system, in which the three-scroll or four-scroll chaotic attractors emerged with different fractional-orders q. Meanwhile, with fractional-order q=0.965 and different initial conditions, coexistence of two kinds of three-scroll and four-scroll chaotic attractors is found simultaneously. Finally, we discussed controlling chaos for the fractional-order memristive chaotic system.

This paper presents an analytical framework to investigate the dynamical behavior of a new fractional-order hyperchaotic circuit system. A sufficient condition for existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence on initial conditions of the solution of the proposed system is derived. The local stability of all the system’s equilibrium points are discussed using fractional Routh–Hurwitz test. Then the analytical conditions for the existence of a pitchfork bifurcation in this system with fractional-order parameter less than 1/3 are provided. Conditions for the existence of Hopf bifurcation in this system are also investigated. The dynamics of discretized form of our fractional-order hyperchaotic system are explored. Chaos control is also achieved in discretized system using delay feedback control technique. The numerical simulation are presented to confirm our theoretical analysis via phase portraits, bifurcation diagrams and Lyapunov exponents. A text encryption algorithm is presented based on the proposed fractional-order system. The results show that the new system exhibits a rich variety of dynamical behaviors such as limit cycles, chaos and transient phenomena where fractional-order derivative represents a key parameter in determining system qualitative behavior.

In this work, a new fractional-order chaotic system with a single parameter and four nonlinearities is introduced. One striking feature is that by varying the system parameter, the fractional-order system generates several complex dynamics: self-excited attractors, hidden attractors, and the coexistence of hidden attractors. In the family of self-excited chaotic attractors, the system has four spiral-saddle-type equilibrium points, or two nonhyperbolic equilibria. Besides, for a certain value of the parameter, a fractional-order no-equilibrium system is obtained. This no-equilibrium system presents a hidden chaotic attractor with a `hurricane’-like shape in the phase space. Multistability is also observed, since a hidden chaotic attractor coexists with a periodic one. The chaos generation in the new fractional-order system is demonstrated by the Lyapunov exponents method and equilibrium stability. Moreover, the complexity of the self-excited and hidden chaotic attractors is analyzed by computing their spectral entropy and Brownian-like motions. Finally, a pseudo-random number generator is designed using the hidden dynamics.

In this paper, a novel three-dimensional fractional-order chaotic system without equilibrium, which can present symmetric hidden coexisting chaotic attractors, is proposed. Dynamical characteristics of the fractional-order system are analyzed fully through numerical simulations, mainly including finite-time local Lyapunov exponents, bifurcation diagram, and the basins of attraction. In particular, the system can generate diverse coexisting attractors varying with different orders, which presents ample and complex dynamic characteristics. And there is great potential for secure communication. Then electronic circuit of the fractional-order system is designed to help verify its effectiveness. What is more, taking the disturbances into account, a finite-time synchronization of the fractional-order chaotic system without equilibrium is achieved and the improved controller is proven strictly by applying finite-time stable theorem. Eventually, simulation results verify the validity and rapidness of the proposed method. Therefore, the fractional-order chaotic system with hidden attractors can present better performance for practical applications, such as secure communication and image encryption, which deserve further investigation.

A modified function projective synchronization for fractional-order chaotic system, called compound generalized function projective synchronization (CGFPS), is proposed theoretically in this paper. There are one scaling-drive system, more than one base-drive system, and one response system in the scheme of CGFPS, and the scaling function matrices come from multidrive systems. The proposed CGFPS technique is based on the stability theory of fractional-order system. Moreover, we achieve the CGFPS between three-driver chaotic systems, that is, the fractional-order Arneodo chaotic system, the fractional-order Chen chaotic system, and the fractional-order Lu chaotic system, and one response chaotic system, that is, the fractional-order Lorenz chaotic system. Numerical experiments are demonstrated to verify the effectiveness of the CGFPS scheme.

A novel three-dimensional fractional-order autonomous chaotic system marked by the ample and complex coexisting attractors is presented. There are a total of seven terms including four nonlinearities in the new system. The evolution of coexisting attractors of the system are numerically investigated by considering both the fractional-order and other system parameters as bifurcation parameters. Numerical simulation results indicate that the system has a huge amount of multifarious coexisting strange attractors for various ranges of parameters, including coexisting point, periodic attractors, multifarious coexisting chaotic, and periodic attractors. Compared with other chaotic systems, the biggest difference and most attractive feature is the capability of the proposed fractional-order system to produce coexisting attractors that undergo a simultaneous displacement phenomenon with variation of a single parameter. Moreover, it is worth noting that constant Lyapunov exponents and the interesting phenomenon of transient coexisting attractors are also observed. Finally, the corresponding implementation circuit is designed. The consistency of the hardware experimental results with numerical simulations verifies the feasibility of the new fractional-order chaotic system.

In this paper, we present a corresponding fractional order three-dimensional autonomous chaotic system based on a new class of integer order chaotic systems. We found that the fractional order chaotic system belongs to the generalized Lorenz system family by analyzing its linear term and topological structure. We also found that the equilibrium point generated by the fractional order system belongs to the unstable saddle point through the prediction correction method and the fractional order stability theory. The complexity of fractional order chaotic system is given by spectral entropy algorithm andC0algorithm. We concluded that the fractional order chaotic system has a higher complexity. The fractional order system can generate rich dynamic behavior phenomenon with the values of the parameters and the order changed. We applied the finite time stability theory to design the finite time synchronous controller between drive system and corresponding system. The numerical simulations demonstrate that the controller provides fast and efficient method in the synchronization process.
