Human resource development (HRD) practices and banking industry effectiveness

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the mediating role of employee competencies in the relationship between human resource development (HRD) practices and organizational effectiveness. Design/methodology/approach An integrated research model was developed by combining principal factors from existing literature. Data were collected through questionnaire from 550 employees of the selected banks. The validity of the model and hypotheses was tested using structural equation modeling. The reliability and validity of the dimensions are established through confirmatory factor analysis. Findings The results indicate that some HRD practices impact organizational effectiveness through their influence on employee competencies. The study further revealed that employee competencies mediate the relationship between HRD practices and organizational effectiveness. Research limitations/implications The research was undertaken in the banking industry and the analysis based on cross-sectional data which cannot be generalized across a broader range of sectors. Practical implications The findings of the study will help policymakers and management of banks in espousing suitable and well-articulated HRD practices to harness the competencies of employees and inordinately enhance organizational effectiveness. Originality/value This study extends the literature by empirically adducing evidence that employee competencies mediated the relationship between HRD practices and organizational effectiveness of the banking industry in Ghana.

Practical implications The findings of the study have the potential to help stakeholders and management of hotels in adopting properly and well-articulated HRD practices to stimulate positive behavior in individuals and impact their knowledge, skills and attitudes. Originality/value This study extends the literature by adducing evidence that employee competencies mediated the association between HRD practices and organizational performance of the hotel industry in Ghana.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships among a learning organization, knowledge and financial performance using the Dimensions of the Learning Organization Questionnaire and its abbreviated version. Design/methodology/approach This study used a secondary data set and performed second-order factor analysis and structural equation modeling for testing the proposed relationships. Findings The study found that a learning organization has a positive effect on knowledge performance; knowledge performance has a positive effect on financial performance; and knowledge performance fully mediates the relationship between a learning organization and financial performance. Research limitations/implications This study contributes to validating the current dimensionality of the theoretical framework of a learning organization proposed by Watkins and Marsick (1993, 1996) and offers a valid conceptual framework of the relationship among the learning culture and organizational performance dimensions. Practical implications This study re-stresses the significance of the learning and knowledge generated by the human resources of an organization and developed by human resource development practitioners. Originality/value This study is valuable to human resource development scholars and practitioners interested in improving and measuring organizational performance.

Considering inconsistent results in the extant literature regarding whether participative practices improve performance, we focused on the mediating roles of an individual`s perception of human resource development practices, including training and career development, on the relationship between the two constructs. We began by examining the validity of the constructs under the study. Next, using structural equation modeling, we found that an individual`s perception of career development fully mediates the relationships between the two participative practices, including participation and empowerment, and in-role performance. In addition, the findings indicated that individuals` perception of training fully mediates the relationship between empowerment and performance, but failed to play a mediating role on the relationship between participation and performance.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the impact of human resource development (HRD) on engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) project success (PS), human resource competency (HRC), job performance (JP), and the interrelationship among them. This paper also investigates the impact of EPC project factors (PF) on PS, the factors affecting HRD, including internal factors (IF) and external factors (EF) during EPC project implementation. Design/methodology/approach Structural equation modeling (SEM), SPSS, and AMOS software were used to test nine proposed hypotheses. The respondents comprised 800 participants involved in EPC projects throughout Vietnam. Findings The results show that HRD positively affects HRC, JP, and PS. HRD is influenced by IF but not influenced by EF. HRC positively impacts on JP and PS, while PF directly impacts on PS. Originality/value The study indicates that the development of competent human resources for EPC project implementation plays a considerable role in EPC PS. The findings also give project professionals a tool for improving HRD, and HRC to increase the likelihood of PS.

Design/methodology/approach An integrated research model was developed by combining principal factors from existing literature. Data were collected through questionnaire from 500 employees of the selected SME’s. The validity of the model and hypotheses was tested using structural equation modeling. The reliability and validity of the dimensions are established through confirmatory factor analysis. Findings The results indicate that some human resource development practices impact employee performance. Performance appraisal however does not impact employee performance of the firms studied. Research limitations/implications The research was undertaken in small and medium scale enterprises, and the analysis based on cross-sectional data which cannot be generalized across a broader range of sectors. Practical implications The findings of the study will help stakeholders, policy makers and management of SME’s in espousing appropriate and well-articulated HRD practices to improve employee competencies and enhance organizational effectiveness. Originality/value This study extends the literature by empirically adducing evidence that, human resource development practices impact employee performance of small and medium scale enterprises in Ghana.

This research uses quantitative research, the aim is to determine the influence of human resource development, religiosity, on employee performance with job satisfaction as an intervening variable. In this study, data was collected by distributing questionnaires to 100 employees using a purposive sampling method to determine respondents' responses to existing variables. The analysis was performed using the method of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) based on partial least square (PLS). The results of the analysis show that human resource development has no effect on employee performance, religiosity has a positive and significant effect on employee performance. Human resource development has a positive and significant effect on job satisfaction, religiosity has a positive and significant effect on job satisfaction, and job satisfaction variables have a positive and significant effect in moderating human resource development on employee performance and religiosity on employee performance. This means that the more often human resource development is given, the higher the employee's performance and the higher the employee's religiosity, the higher the employee's performance will be and will result in job satisfaction for employees at the Sharia Business Unit Bank in Palembang City.  Keywords: Human Resources Development, Religiosity, Employee Performance, and Job Satisfaction.  AbstrakPenelitian ini menggunakan jenis penelitian kuantitatif, tujuannya yaitu untuk mengetahui besarnya pengaruh pengembangan sumber daya manusia, religiusitas, terhadap kinerja karyawan  dengan kepuasan kerja sebagai variabel intervening. Dalam penelitian ini data dikumpulkan dengan meyebarkan kuesioner terhadap 100 karyawan menggunakan metode purposive sampling untuk mengetahui tanggapan responden terhadap variabel yang ada. Analisis dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) berbasis partial least square (PLS). Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa pengembangan sumber daya manusia tidak terdapat pengaruh terhadap kinerja karyawan, religiusitas berpengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap kinerja karyawan. Pengembangan sumber daya manusia berpengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap kepuasan kerja, religiusitas berpengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap kepuasan kerja, Dan variabel kepuasan kerja berpengaruh positif dan signifikan dalam memoderasi antara pengembangan sumber daya manusia terhadap kinerja karyawan dan religiusitas terhadap kinerja karyawan. Ini berarti semakin sering pengembangan sumber daya manusia diberikan maka semakin tinggi kinerja karyawan dan semakin tinggi religiusitas karyawan maka kinerja karyawan akan semakin tinggi dan akan menghasilkan kepuasan kerja bagi karyawan pada Bank Unit Usaha Syariah di Kota Palembang.  Kata Kunci: Pengembangan Sumber Daya Manusia, Religiusitas, Kinerja Karyawan, dan Kepuasan Kerja.

Purpose This paper aims to examine the moderating role of organizational learning culture (OLC) on the relationship between human resource development (HRD) practices and employee competencies (EC) in enhancing organizational effectiveness (OE). Design/methodology/approach An integrated research model of HRD practices, EC, OE and OLC was developed. The validity of the model is tested by applying structural equation modelling (SEM) approach to data collected from 506 employees working in 4 medium-size cement manufacturing companies. Findings The results confirmed that training and career development had a significant impact on EC, the moderating effect of OLC on the relationship between HRD practices and EC was found significant and there is a significant and positive relationship between EC and employee perceived OE. Originality/value This paper contributes to the HRD literature, integrating HRD practices, OLC and EC. The research is unique as it has applied moderated SEM to test hypotheses of the study.

Purpose The purpose was to examine the mediating role of employee competencies in the relationship between human resource development (HRD) practices and organizational effectiveness. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected through questionnaire from 550 employees of the selected banks. The author tested four hypotheses Findings The results confirmed Hypothesis One, indicating training and development have a big influence on employee competencies. There was also support for Hypothesis Two, revealing employee involvement influences employee competencies. But the results did not support Hypothesis Three, which stated that career development has a significant influence on employee competencies. Finally, there was support for Hypothesis Four, which said HRD practices influence organizational effectiveness through the mediating role of employee competencies. Originality/value The author chose to focus on the banking sector because of its significance to a country’s economy. A further justification was that similar studies have focused on Western banks and there is a paucity of research into HRD practices in the West African banking industry. More broadly, there have been very few studies of the mediating processes through which HR practices impact performance.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to conduct a critical review of the mediation studies published in the field of Human Resource Development (HRD) to discern if the study designs, the nature of data collection and the choice of statistical methods justify the causal claims made in those studies. Design/methodology/approach This paper conducts a critical review of published refereed articles that examined mediation in Human Resource Development Quarterly, Human Resource Development International, Advances in Developing Human Resources and European Journal of Training and Development. Mediation studies published in these journals from 2000 to 2015 were identified and coded. The four journals sampled were chosen to provide breadth of coverage of the different types of empirical studies published in the field of HRD. Findings The review findings imply that HRD scholars are not employing experimental or longitudinal designs in their studies when randomized experiments and longitudinal studies with at least three waves of data collection are regarded as the golden standards of causal research. Further, the findings indicate that sophisticated statistical modeling approaches like structural equation modeling are widely used to examine mediation in cross-sectional studies and most importantly, a large number of such studies do not acknowledge that cross-sectional data does not allow definite causal claims. Research limitations/implications Although the findings urge us to rethink the inferences of mediation effects reported over the past 15 years in the field of HRD, this study also serves as a guide in thinking about framing and testing causal mediation models in future HRD research and even argues for a paradigm shift from a positivist orientation to critical and postmodern perspectives that can accommodate mixed methods designs for mediation research in HRD. Originality/value This paper presents a critical review of the trends in examining mediation models in the HRD discipline, suggests best practices for researchers examining the causal process of mediation and directs readers to recent methodological articles that have discussed causal issues in mediation studies.
