Purpose A rotary kiln is a pyro processing device that is used to raise the temperature of materials in cement factories. Temperature monitoring is an essential process in the rotary kiln to yield high quality clinker. Temperature measurement is a challenging task in clinkering process and it is difficult to apply automation techniques. As the pyrometer gives unreliable readings, it is necessary to apply various image processing techniques on the camera images to measure the temperature inside the kiln at different zones. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, a fuzzy logic rule-based analysis is proposed to measure temperature using a burning flame image in which it considers red, green, blue (RGB) magnitude planes. The proposed method uses Mamdani fuzzy inference system for decision-making. The system takes RGB magnitude as an input fuzzified variable and generates temperature as fuzzified output. Findings This paper focuses on the temperature measurement obtained from the images of the camera system. The commands to the valves and actuators are controlled using the center of gravity of the control regime. The fuzzy logic controller detects the temperature of flame zones using color features of burning flame images. Originality/value Precise temperature mapping of flame images helps to control the temperature inside the rotating kiln to produce high quality clinker. The process can be viewed remotely and controlled using various control loops from anywhere.

Agriculture is the backbone of human sustenance in this world. With growing population, there is need for increased productivity in agriculture to be able to meet the demands. Diseases can occur on any part of a plant, but in this paper only the symptoms in the fruits of a plant is considered using segmentation algorithm and edge/ sizing detectors. We also looked at image processing using fuzzy logic controller. The system was designed using object oriented analysis and design methodology. It was implemented using MySQL for the database, and PHP programming language. This system will be of great benefit to farmers and will encourage them in investing their resources since crop diseases can be detected and eliminated early.

Purpose This paper aims to outline and implement a novel hybrid controller in humanoid robots to map an optimal path. The hybrid controller is designed using the Owl search algorithm (OSA) and Fuzzy logic. Design/methodology/approach The optimum steering angle (OS) is used to deal with the obstacle located in the workspace, which is the output of the hybrid OSA Fuzzy controller. It is obtained by feeding OSA's output, i.e. intermediate steering angle (IS), in fuzzy logic. It is obtained by supplying the distance of obstacles from all directions and target distance from the robot's present location. Findings The present research is based on the navigation of humanoid NAO in complicated workspaces. Therefore, various simulations are performed in a 3D simulator in different complicated workspaces. The validation of their outcomes is done using the various experiments in similar workspaces using the proposed controller. The comparison between their outcomes demonstrates an acceptable correlation. Ultimately, evaluating the proposed controller with another existing navigation approach indicates a significant improvement in performance. Originality/value A new framework is developed to guide humanoid NAO in complicated workspaces, which is hardly seen in the available literature. Inspection in simulation and experimental workspaces verifies the robustness of the designed navigational controller. Considering minimum error ranges and near collaboration, the findings from both frameworks are evaluated against each other in respect of specified navigational variables. Finally, concerning other present approaches, the designed controller is also examined, and major modifications in efficiency have been reported.

Traffic light plays an important role in the urban traffic management. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the traffic controller for effective traffic management and better traffic flow leading to greener environment. In this paper, an advanced and intelligent traffic light controller is proposed, utilising the fuzzy logic technology and image processing technique. A fuzzy logic control has been implemented to provide the attribute of intelligence to the system. For real-time image acquisition, the process is further linked to the fuzzy logic controller which generates a unique output for each input pattern. Here image processing and fuzzy logic tool boxes of MATLAB are used where the final output is sent to Peripheral Interface Controller (PIC) microcontroller to drive the traffic signals in the desired manner. The results obtained show an improvement of 44% in the overall outcome of traffic management as compared to the conventional traffic controller, marking great feasibility and practicality of the current model.

Purpose Humanoids have become the center of attraction for many researchers dealing with robotics investigations by their ability to replace human efforts in critical interventions. As a result, navigation and path planning has emerged as one of the most promising area of research for humanoid models. In this paper, a fuzzy logic controller hybridized with genetic algorithm (GA) has been proposed for path planning of a humanoid robot to avoid obstacles present in a cluttered environment and reach the target location successfully. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach Here, sensor outputs for nearest obstacle distances and bearing angle of the humanoid are first fed as inputs to the fuzzy logic controller, and first turning angle (TA) is obtained as an intermediate output. In the second step, the first TA derived from the fuzzy logic controller is again supplied to the GA controller along with other inputs and second TA is obtained as the final output. The developed hybrid controller has been tested in a V-REP simulation platform, and the simulation results are verified in an experimental setup. Findings By implementation of the proposed hybrid controller, the humanoid has reached its defined target position successfully by avoiding the obstacles present in the arena both in simulation and experimental platforms. The results obtained from simulation and experimental platforms are compared in terms of path length and time taken with each other, and close agreements have been observed with minimal percentage of errors. Originality/value Humanoids are considered more efficient than their wheeled robotic forms by their ability to mimic human behavior. The current research deals with the development of a novel hybrid controller considering fuzzy logic and GA for navigational analysis of a humanoid robot. The developed control scheme has been tested in both simulation and real-time environments and proper agreements have been found between the results obtained from them. The proposed approach can also be applied to other humanoid forms and the technique can serve as a pioneer art in humanoid navigation.

<span>Ranking function is a predictive algorithm that is used to establish a simple ordering of documents according to its relevance. This step is critical because the results’ quality of a Domain Specific Information Retrieval (IR) such as Hadith Information Retrieval is fundamentally dependent of the ranking function. A Hierarchical Fuzzy Logic Controller of <em>Mamdani</em>-type Fuzzy Inference System has been built to define the ranking function, based on the Malay Information retrieval’s BM25 Model. The model examines three-inputs (Ontology BM25 Score, Fabrication Rate of Hadith and Shia Rate of Hadith) and four-output values of Final Ranking Score which consist of three triangular membership functions. The proposed system has outperformed the BM25 original score and the Vector Space Model (VM) on 16 queries, while the BM25 original score and Vector Space Model only yield better result in 9 and 2 queries respectively on the P@10, %no measures and MAP. P@10 represent the values of Precision at Rank 10 P@10), %no measures represent the percentage of queries with no relevant documents in the top ten retrieved and MAP represents Mean Average Precision of the queries. The results show the proposed system have capability to demote negative documents and move up the relevant documents in the ranking list and its capability to recall unseen document with the application of ontology in text retrieval. For the future works, the researcher would like to apply the usage of other Malay Semantic elements and another corpus for positive ranking indicator.</span>

Purpose Limited facilities operating and modernization budgets require organizations to carefully identify, prioritize and authorize projects to ensure allocated resources align with strategic objectives. Traditional facility prioritization methods using risk matrices can be improved to increase granularity in categorization and avoid mathematical error or human cognitive biases. These limitations restrict the utility of prioritizations and if erroneously used to select projects for funding, they can lead to wasted resources. This paper aims to propose a novel facility prioritization methodology that corrects these assessment design and implementation issues. Design/methodology/approach A Mamdani fuzzy logic inference system is coupled with a traditional, categorical risk assessment framework to understand a facilities’ consequence of failure and its effect on an organization’s strategic objectives. Model performance is evaluated using the US Air Force’s facility portfolio, which has been previously assessed, treating facility replicability and interruptability as minimization objectives. The fuzzy logic inference system is built to account for these objectives, but as proof of ease-of-adaptation, facility dependency is added as an additional risk assessment criterion. Findings Results of the fuzzy logic-based approach show a high degree of consistency with the traditional approach, though the value of the information provided by the framework developed here is considerably higher, as it creates a continuous set of facility prioritizations that are unbiased. The fuzzy logic framework is likely suitable for implementation by diverse, spatially distributed organizations in which decision-makers seek to balance risk assessment complexity with an output value. Originality/value This paper fills the identified need for portfolio management strategies that focus on prioritizing projects by risk to organizational operations or objectives.

One of the most crucial and economically beneficial tasks for energy customer is peak load curtailment. On account of the fast response of renewable energy resources (RERs) such as photovoltaic (PV) units and battery energy storage system (BESS), this task is closer to be efficiently implemented. Depends on the customer peak load demand and energy characteristics, the feasibility of this strategy may warry. When adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) is exploited for forecasting, it can provide many benefits to address the above-mentioned issues and facilitate its easy implementation, with short calculating time and re-trainability. This paper introduces a data driven forecasting method based on fuzzy logic for optimized peak load reduction. First, the amount of energy generated by PV is forecasted using ANFIS which conducts output trend, and then, the BESS capacity is calculated according to the forecasted results. The trend of the load power is then decomposed in Cartesian plane into two parts, left and right from load peak, searching for BESS capacity equal. Network switching sequence over consumption is provided by a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) with respect to BESS capacity and PV energy output. Finally, to prove the effectiveness of the proposed ANFIS-based peak shaving method, offline digital time-domain simulations have been performed on a real-life practical test micro grid system in MATLAB/Simulink environment and the results have been experimentally verified by testing on a practical micro grid system with real-life data obtained from smart meter and also, compared with several previously-reported methods.

These papers are originally published in the proceedings of Korea fuzzy logic and intelligent systems society (KFIS) fall conference in 1999. Eight papers are selected for this special issue. Major topics of them are fuzzy theory, neural network, inference system, intelligent controller, etc. In this issue, Seihwan Park and Hyung Lee-Kwang extend the concept of fuzzy hypergraph to type-2 fuzzy hypergraph using type-2 fuzzy sets. It has not only the same properties of hypergraphs but also the extended properties of them. It is also shown that interval valued fuzzy hypergraph is a special case of type-2 fuzzy hypergraph. Jung-Heum Yon, Yong-Taek Kim, Jae-Yong Seo and Hong-Tae Jeon design an efficient neural network called dynamic multidimensional wavelet neural network. It can perform an effective dynamic mapping with less dimensions of the input signal. These features show one way to compensate the weakness of the diagonal recurrent neural network and feedforward wavelet neural network. Yigon Kim, Yang Hee Jung and Young Chel Bae propose a new method for diagnosis of insulation aging using wavelet. It measures the partial discharge on-line from data acquisition system and analyses it using wavelet to acquire 21) patterns. They design a neuro-fuzzy model that diagnoses an electrical equipment using the data. Byung-Jae Choi, Seong-Woo Kwak and Byung Kook Kim develop an adaptive fuzzy logic controller. A sole input fuzzy variable is used to simplify the design procedure and the switching hyperplane of sliding mode control is used to improve the adaptability. Myung-Geun Chun, Keun-Chang Kwak and Jeong-Woong Ryu show an efficient fuzzy rule generation scheme for adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system using the conditional fuzzy c-means and fuzzy equalization methods. They apply this method to the truck backer-upper control and Box-Jenkins modeling problem. Daijin Kim proposes a new data classification method based on the tolerant rough set that extends the existing equivalent rough set. Twostage classification method is used. All data are classified by using the lower approximation at the first stage and then the non-classified data at the first stage are classified again by using the rough membership functions obtained from the upper approximation set. Min-Soeng Kim, Sun-Gi Hong and Ju-Jang Lee incorporate the Q-learning algorithm into the fuzzy logic controller. Modified fuzzy rule is used for the incorporation. As a result, a fuzzy logic controller is obtained that can learn through experience. Dong Hwa Kim designs a new 2-DOF PID controller and applies it to the operating data based transfer function of Gun-san Gas turbine in Korea. Purpose This paper aims to demonstrate the efficacy of fuzzy logic controller (FLC) over proportional integral (PI) and sliding mode controller (SMC) for maintaining flat voltage profile at the load bus of a single-generator-based micro-grid system using STATCOM. Design/methodology/approach A STATCOM is used to improve the voltage profile of the load bus. The performance of the STATCOM is evaluated by using three different controllers: PI controllers, FLCs and SMCs. The performance comparison of the controllers is done with different dc bus voltages, different load bus voltage references, various loads such as R-L loads and dynamic loads. Findings A comparative analysis is done between the performances of the three different controllers. The comparative study culminates that FLC is found to be superior than the other proposed controllers. SMC is a close competitor of fuzzy controller. Originality/value Design of fuzzy logic and SMCs for a STATCOM implemented in a single-generator-based micro-grid system is applied.
