Millennial behavioural intention in Islamic banks: the role of social media influencers

Purpose This study aims to examine the role of social media influencers (SMI) in millennial behavioural intentions towards Islamic banks, from the perspective of both bank clients and non-clients. Design/methodology/approach Of the 484 Indonesian millennials in the sample, 278 were clients and 206 non-clients of Islamic banks. Factor analysis was used to examine the SMI dimension in the Islamic banking context. This study then used the partial least square to evaluate the proposed model and test the relationships between SMI, bank image, trust and behavioural intention. Findings Three SMI dimensions were confirmed, i.e. expertise, celebrity and similarity. For bank clients, the findings show that SMI has a significant influence on behavioural intention and reinforces bank image and trust. For non-clients, SMI does not have a significant impact on behavioural intentions but significantly strengthens bank image and trust. Practical implications Islamic bank managers can take benefit of this study findings by learning to foster the behavioural intentions of their millennial clients and non-clients using SMIs. Further, choosing the right SMIs for their Islamic bank is an important activity, and if they want to make a positive impact on existing and potential millennial clients, they need to choose popular millennials who are knowledgeable about the Islamic value compliance of Islamic banking services. Originality/value This study is an early study to explore SMI’s role in influencing the behavioural intentions of millennials towards Islamic banks.

PurposeThis study aims to examine behavioural intention towards Islamic bank including three determinants: religiosity, trust and image across customers and non-customers.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses 400 samples, consisting of customers and non-customers of Islamic banks collected from Bandung, Indonesia. Partial least square was applied to evaluate the association between religiosity, trust, image and behavioural intention.FindingsThis study reveals a direct effect of religiosity on behavioural intention and indirect effect through trust and image for both customers and non-customers of Islamic banks. Although the impact of religiosity on trust, image and behavioural intention is significant in both the customer and non-customer sample, the effect of religiosity on the customer is higher compared to that of non-customer.Practical implicationsThis study provides an opportunity for Islamic bank managers to increase the behavioural intention among the customer, as well as non-customer. To increase behavioural intention amongst customers and non-customers, Islamic bank managers need to keep the bank operation compliant with theSharialaw, maintain a good image and gain trust from both customers and non-customers.Originality/valueThis study is the first attempt to evaluate the behavioural intention towards Islamic bank across customers and non-customers.

ABSTRACT The role of Islamic banking in the national economy becomes more strategic as the government is facing fiscal limitation in funding the development. The growth of Islamic banking, a bank managed by implementing the principles of Islamic law, has not been satisfactory. This can be examined by referring to the role of Islamic banking in national banking which is  till in the rate of less than 5 percent. This research aims to observe the influences of religiosity and service quality on trust and customer loyalty, as well as to observe the influence of trust on customer loyaltyof Islamic Bank in Bogor. By collecting 76 samples of Islamic bank customers in Bogor and utilizing structural equation modeling partial least square (SEM-PLS) as the technique of analysis, it is revealed that the aspects of religiosity and service quality are influential on loyalty if it is supported by trust. Meanwhile, the trust itself has a positive influence on loyalty. The finding implies that to increase the loyalty of Islamic bank customers, customer trust should be built.

Purpose The study proposes an extended model of the technology acceptance model (TAM) by including Sharia compliance (SC), knowledge of SC and confidence in SC, in addition to perceived usefulness (PU) and perceived ease of use (PEOU). This research aims to investigate its impact on satisfaction, applied in e-banking of Indonesian Islamic banking. Also, the authors study the role of SC, knowledge of SC and confidence in all relationships in TAM in explaining customer satisfaction. Design/methodology/approach Data collecting in this research is a self-administered survey by sending questionnaires to respondents online via e-mail or WhatsApp. The number of collected data are 300 completed questionnaires. Hypothesis testing and analyses in this research use the multiple linear regression model. Findings This study finds that SC, knowledge about SC and belief in SC have a significant impact on customer satisfaction of Islamic banks using e-banking. The most important finding in this study is that SC, knowledge about SC and belief in SC significantly moderate the relationship between PU and PEOU with customer satisfaction. Originality/value The originality of this research is exploring the role of SC, knowledge of SC and confidence in SC in all relationships, and it is expressed in the original TAM to explain customer satisfaction. This study has never been applied in previous studies, particularly studies of Islamic bank e-banking in Indonesia. This study highlights the importance of SC in the extended TAM, as a distinguishing factor between e-banking provided by Islamic banks and conventional banks, as well as the role of knowledge and confidence in SC. The authors propose policies that will be useful for the improvement of the market share of Islamic banking in Indonesia.

Purpose This study aims to explore the antecedents and outcomes of brand community engagement (BCE) in the context of social media-based brand communities (SMBCs). Moreover, the mediating role of brand evangelism between BCE and brand defence and between BCE and brand resilience is examined. Design/methodology/approach The data was collected using a questionnaire-based survey from 201 active members of various SMBCs. Partial least square based structural equation modelling is used to test the proposed conceptual model. Findings The results suggest that brand identification and brand prominence are the antecedents of BCE. BCE positively influence brand evangelism and brand defence. Furthermore, the finding suggests that brand evangelism mediates the relationship between BCE and brand defence and also between BCE and brand resilience. Research limitations/implications The sample for this study involves respondents active on different SMBCs, which may constrain uniformity in respondents’ experiences. Practical implications The insights provided by this study are useful in enhancing BCE with the SMBCs. The study highlights the role of brand evangelism in actively endorsing and defending the brands. The brand manager can promote brand evangelistic behaviour through meaningful engagement with SMBCs. Originality/value The study contributes to the literature of brand community engagement by focussing on its antecedents and outcomes in SMBCs. Further, this study adds to the branding literature by connecting two crucial streams of brand research: BCE and brand evangelism. The study also explores the mediating role of brand evangelism. It enhances the understanding of consumer-brand relationships in the context of SMBCs.

Purpose Social media influencers (SMIs) have become an important source of influence that affects consumer behaviours in their decision-making processes. As such, this justifies scholarly attention in understanding how SMIs transfer their meanings to endorsed brands and drive consumers’ positive behavioural intentions. With the intention to fill this knowledge gap, this paper aims to examine the impact of SMIs’ credibility, as manifested by trustworthiness, attractiveness and expertise, along with the moderating effects of materialism, on followers’ purchase intention. Design/methodology/approach Self-administrated online surveys were used to collect data from Instagram users. A total of 191 usable data were collected and analysed using partial least square structural equation modelling. Findings The results show that SMIs’ trustworthiness and expertise are significant predictors of followers’ purchase intention. Moreover, the moderating effect of materialism on the relationship between attractiveness and purchase intention is significant. Notably, the influence of attractiveness on purchase intention is greater when materialism is high. Originality/value This research contributes to the SMI literature by examining the influence of SMIs’ trustworthiness, attractiveness and expertise, along with the moderating effect of materialism, on followers’ purchase intention.

Purpose The 2008 financial crisis that hit conventional banks provides a market opportunity for special types of banks. Furthermore, given the current financial reform for financial inclusion and economic concern of the Nigerian Government, there is a need for research on the adoption of Islamic banks. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to determine the predictors of Islamic bank adoption in Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach Data is collected from 385 Islamic bank customers in northern Nigeria and is analyzed using the partial least square structural equation modeling technique. Findings The result reveals that trust, social influence, knowledge and government support have a significant positive relationship with the adoption of Islamic banks, while relative advantage and compatibility do not. The model (trust, social influence, knowledge, government support, relative advantage and compatibility) explained 50% of the variance in the adoption of Islamic bank. Practical implications These findings are very important to scholars, the policymakers and Islamic bank operators in designing their marketing strategies. It shows that trust, social influence, government support and knowledge are predictors of Islamic bank adoption. Originality/value This study extended the diffusion of innovation (DOI) theory by combining relative advantage, compatibility with trust, social influence, knowledge and government support to the model. The developed model is validated for the study of Islamic bank adoption in an emerging market, Nigeria. Arguably, it is the only study that test effect sizes (f2) and predictive relevance (Q2) of extended DOI on Islamic banks.

Purpose This paper aims to examine loyalty formation, including service quality, perceived value, image and satisfaction as determinants, and their effect on the financial performance of Islamic banks. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from 280 Islamic bank clients in Indonesia and bank financial performance data from bank financial reports. Variance-based partial least square modelling was used to assess the relationships between loyalty, its determinants and their influence on bank financial performance. Findings This study finds that client loyalty towards Islamic banks is most influenced by perceived service quality and perceived value. Further, this study documents the importance of client loyalty in influencing bank financial performance and indirect effect of clients’ satisfaction on financial performance through the strengthening of client loyalty. Practical implications This study offers a path for the managers of Islamic banks to enhance financial performance by enhancing client loyalty. To develop client loyalty, this study suggests that Islamic banks should offer economical and service-derived benefits that are superior to those other banks offer. Further, Islamic banks need to ensure that their business operations are compatible with Islamic values. Originality/value This is an early empirical study attempting to examine the link between customer loyalty and its impact on Islamic bank financial performance.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the behavioural intention and adoption of internet banking (IB) among clients of local and foreign Islamic banks in Malaysia. Design/methodology/approach Survey questionnaires were distributed among the Islamic banks’ clients at two main states, namely, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. The number of clients involved is 319 (n = 319). The data was analysed using the partial least square (PLS) and theoretically, the research framework in this study is guided by the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology 2 (UTAUT2). Findings The smart PLS analysis yielded three main outcomes, namely, the variables such as performance expectancy, effort expectancy, price value, facilitating conditions and habit have a positive influence over the behavioural intention and subsequently lead to the adoption of IB. The other two variables, namely, social influence and hedonic motivation were negatively-related and insignificant for behavioural intention. Third, this paper also noticed that facilitating conditions and habits have a direct relationship with the adoption of IB. Practical implications Based on the findings, Islamic banks can take necessary action to design a better policy to further accelerate the usage of IB among their client. By identifying those factors, this, perhaps, can allow Islamic banks to invest more ideas on those significant factors that influence their interest, and subsequently leads to good business to Islamic banks as the clients nowadays are looking for simplicity and convenience factors when using IB. Originality/value This research is expected to enhance existing literature on internet banking, especially in Islamic banking research on the technological edge. Limited research has been done in Malaysia, particularly on the intention and continuous adoption of IB in Islamic banks using the UTAUT2 framework. This would be breakthrough research in identifying factors that influence customers’ continuous adoption of IB.

PurposeThis study aims to explore the effect of social media engagement on the determinants of behavioural intention. Specifically, the authors empirically research the three behavioural intention determinants, namely, attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control (PBC), and confirm their effect on students' intention to enrol on a university online programme.Design/methodology/approachA conclusive research analysis is followed, and a moderation analysis is conducted to test the hypotheses of the model. Empirical evidence from 201 students in the UK higher education is used and a structural equation modelling approach is followed.FindingsThe findings suggest a significant effect of social media engagement on attitude, subjective norms and PBC. The latter three are confirmed as determinants of the intention to enrol on a university online programme. Mindfulness is found to positively moderate the effect of the three determinants on behavioural intention.Originality/valueThis study advances knowledge pertaining to the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) by highlighting the effect of social media engagement on the determinants of the intention to enrol on a university online programme. Additionally, the moderating role of mindfulness is also tested with regards to its effect on the relationship between behavioural intentions and its determinants.

Purpose This paper aims to attempt to investigate and test the factors related to social media advertisement that could forecast the intention to subscribe to Islamic banking products in Malaysia. Design/methodology/approach The research framework used in this study is guided by the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). The questionnaire method was used to collect data from 360 social media users and partial least square (PLS) analysis was carried out for the model’s validation. Findings The analytical results showed that perceived relevance, informativeness and perceived expectancy were found to have a statistical relationship with the purchase intention of Islamic banking products via a social media platform. Practical implications The study offers a practical implication in which the findings prove as helpful means for Islamic financial institutions to discover paramount techniques to retain existing customers and at the same time encourage potential new customers to subscribe to their products. Originality/value Deficiency of research focusing on social media marketing, especially the incorporation of the UTAUT model was observed in the literature. Thus, this paper offers additional literature on social media marketing and elucidates their role in Islamic banking industry, particularly from the Malaysian context. This research is considered to be among the primary attempts to examine the drivers of social media marketing and customers’ intention to subscribe to Islamic banking products in Malaysia.
