Purpose The purpose of this paper is to illustrate some methods to protect digital libraries using digital rights management (DRM) technologies and specifically the methods applied at the digital libraries of Jordan universities. Design/methodology/approach A descriptive research method has been used to examine the extent of DRM in digital libraries of universities in Jordan. Findings Majority of the universities in Jordan use different methods of protection including coding, identification, authenticity and digital watermark. However, methods including digital signature, digital fingerprint, copy detection systems and pay system have not been employed within Jordanian universities. The use of copyright management systems has been limited, which shows the weakness in the use of technological protection within the investigated libraries. Originality/value This study has shown contribution to the development of digital libraries that are based on the protection of new technology and are able to provide better services to users without concern about protecting publishers’ rights.

Purpose – This study aims to highlight practical considerations to be made when choosing an eBook package for an institution. Many academic libraries purchase eBooks bundled in packages, either as a time- or cost-saving measure or to build a new subject collection. Design/methodology/approach – The authors searched the Web sites of six major publishers for information on eBook packages, including subject coverage, digital rights management restrictions and usage allowances. The analysis also includes a potential overlap between related subject collections and the ability to purchase titles individually. Findings – Usage allowances, digital rights management restrictions and purchasing options vary considerably from publisher to publisher. There was title overlap between related subject packages found in some publishers. In response to user preferences and needs, many publishers are loosening restrictions on their eBook content, which make purchasing packages a more attractive option for libraries. Originality/value – The landscape of eBook publishing is rapidly changing, which can complicate purchasing decisions. The detailed comparison provided by this study can be used to assist collections developers in making purchasing decisions best suited to their library and avoiding pitfalls such as duplicate purchases.

With the Internet expanding quickly and there being a tremendous underlying market for digital content distributing, it brings a new technology that protects digital content from pirating and destroying--digital rights management (DRM),DRM not only protects content by encrypting, but also protects the content creator and owners rights and interests. The article primarily studies the multimedia courseware DRM in the distance network learning system. It firstly introduces the DRM based theory, then presents a DRM structure model and functional model, which is very important for the ulterior development.

PurposeEmployee compliance with information system security policies (ISSPs) has been emphasized as a key factor in protecting information assets against insider threats. Even though previous studies have identified extrinsic factors (in the form of external pressure, rewards and social norms) influencing employee compliance, the functioning of employees' intrinsic motivation has not been clearly analyzed. Thus, the aim of this study is to explore the influence of intrinsic motivations on employees' ISSP compliance.Design/methodology/approachThis study follows a survey approach and conducts structural equation modeling using WarpPLS 5.0 to test the research model and hypotheses. The survey respondents are users of an enterprise digital rights management (EDRM) system.FindingsThe analysis results demonstrate that work impediments, perceived responsibility and self-efficacy significantly influence the intention to comply with ISSP. Additionally, autonomy significantly affects self-efficacy and perceived responsibility. Furthermore, autonomy plays a moderating role in the relationship between work impediment and ISSP compliance intentions.Originality/valueThis study initiatively explores the effect of intrinsic motivations on ISSP compliance intention of employees for a specific information security system (i.e. the EDRM system). This study clarifies the enabling role of intrinsic motivations in ISSP compliance and helps organizations to understand that employee's self-motivated intention, i.e. autonomy, is an essential factor that achieves a higher level of ISSP compliance in the workplace.

The aim of the paper is to show the most important developments of the e-book in the last 10 years. Special emphasis is on the activities contributing to the creation of favorable condition for the production, distribution and reading electronic books. Successful information management with regard to e-books means defining the term e-book itself, developing identification systems, digital rights management and legal deposit as a part of digital libraries and cultural heritage.

Purpose – The aim of this study is to compare print and e-book use for identical titles in the e-Duke Scholarly Collection (e-DSC) from 2011 to 2013 to determine format preference for a discrete collection of titles in humanities and social sciences. Design/methodology/approach – Use statistics for the e-DSC were downloaded from the e-book platform by title and call number to determine use by title and subject. Circulation statistics were culled from the library’s integrated library system for the same titles to compare e-book use to that of the same print title. Findings – Although e-books had a high number of titles with use as a per cent of the collection, examination of substantive use shows a slight preference for print. While 73 per cent of the e-books garnered enough interest to click on them, only 12 per cent had substantive use. Research limitations/implications – The e-DSC changed platforms in December 2013. The new platform does not require users to create an account to download e-book sections and digital rights management limitations have been removed. The same examination of collection use in 2.5 years on the new platform will provide an interesting comparison on the function of platform on e-book use. Originality/value – The comparison of identical print and e-titles is less studied and includes the examination of “substantive use” in comparing print to e-book use.
