Early detection and treatment of glaucoma is of interest as it is a chronic eye disease leading to an irreversible loss of vision. Existing automated systems rely largely on fundus images for assessment of glaucoma due to their fast acquisition and cost-effectiveness. Optical Coherence Tomographic ( OCT ) images provide vital and unambiguous information about nerve fiber loss and optic cup morphology, which are essential for disease assessment. However, the high cost of OCT is a deterrent for deployment in screening at large scale. In this article, we present a novel CAD solution wherein both OCT and fundus modality images are leveraged to learn a model that can perform a mapping of fundus to OCT feature space. We show how this model can be subsequently used to detect glaucoma given an image from only one modality (fundus). The proposed model has been validated extensively on four public andtwo private datasets. It attained an AUC/Sensitivity value of 0.9429/0.9044 on a diverse set of 568 images, which is superior to the figures obtained by a model that is trained only on fundus features. Cross-validation was also done on nearly 1,600 images drawn from a private (OD-centric) and a public (macula-centric) dataset and the proposed model was found to outperform the state-of-the-art method by 8% (public) to 18% (private). Thus, we conclude that fundus to OCT feature space mapping is an attractive option for glaucoma detection.

Due to the non-invasiveness and high precision of electroencephalography (EEG), the combination of EEG and artificial intelligence (AI) is often used for emotion recognition. However, the internal differences in EEG data have become an obstacle to classification accuracy. To solve this problem, considering labeled data from similar nature but different domains, domain adaptation usually provides an attractive option. Most of the existing researches aggregate the EEG data from different subjects and sessions as a source domain, which ignores the assumption that the source has a certain marginal distribution. Moreover, existing methods often only align the representation distributions extracted from a single structure, and may only contain partial information. Therefore, we propose the multi-source and multi-representation adaptation (MSMRA) for cross-domain EEG emotion recognition, which divides the EEG data from different subjects and sessions into multiple domains and aligns the distribution of multiple representations extracted from a hybrid structure. Two datasets, i.e., SEED and SEED IV, are used to validate the proposed method in cross-session and cross-subject transfer scenarios, experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of our model to state-of-the-art models in most settings.

Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT), Chagas disease or American Trypanosomiasis (CD), and leishmaniases are protozoan infections produced by trypanosomatid parasites belonging to the kinetoplastid order and they constitute an urgent global health problem. In fact, there is an urgent need of more efficient and less toxic chemotherapy for these diseases. Medicinal inorganic chemistry currently offers an attractive option for the rational design of new drugs and, in particular, antiparasitic ones. In this sense, one of the main strategies for the design of metal-based antiparasitic compounds has been the coordination of an organic ligand with known or potential biological activity, to a metal centre or an organometallic core. Classical metal coordination complexes or organometallic compounds could be designed as multifunctional agents joining, in a single molecule, different chemical species that could affect different parasitic targets. This review is focused on the rational design of palladium(II) and platinum(II) compounds with bioactive ligands as prospective drugs against trypanosomatid parasites that has been conducted by our group during the last 20 years.

Food allergy is associated with alterations in the gut microbiota, epithelial barrier, and immune tolerance. These dysfunctions are observed within the first months of life, indicating that early intervention is crucial for disease prevention. Preventive nutritional strategies with prebiotics are an attractive option, as prebiotics such as galacto-oligosaccharides and inulin can promote tolerance, epithelial barrier reinforcement, and gut microbiota modulation. Nonetheless, the ideal period for intervention remains unknown. Here, we investigated whether galacto-oligosaccharide/inulin supplementation during gestation could protect offspring from wheat allergy development in BALB/cJRj mice. We demonstrated that gestational prebiotic supplementation promoted the presence of beneficial strains in the fecal microbiota of dams during gestation and partially during mid-lactation. This specific microbiota was transferred to their offspring and maintained to adulthood. The presence of B and T regulatory immune cell subsets was also increased in the lymph nodes of offspring born from supplemented mothers, suggestive of a more tolerogenic immune environment. Indeed, antenatal prebiotic supplementation reduced the development of wheat allergy symptoms in offspring. Our study thus demonstrates that prebiotic supplementation during pregnancy induces, in the offspring, a tolerogenic environment and a microbial imprint that mitigates food allergy development.

This paper introduces a generalized structure for the optimal development of an adventure serious game. Present pandemic conditions induce transformations in educational methods, of which games are an attractive option. A serious game is an interdisciplinary team project for which our structure allows all members to interact irrespective of computer science proficiency. A method of interaction between unified blocks is proposed, consisting of five blocks that cover all the characteristics necessary to describe a serious game. The unified blocks are: rules, characters, scenarios, communication and score. The blocks are divided into sub-blocks that detail the characteristics of the game. The “luck” sub-block allows the real-life non-predictability dimension to be included in the game. During the interaction of the sub-blocks the different contexts of the game are created. Each context has a specific educational content goal that the player must go through. The interactions between sub-blocks are described in an XML file, common working environment for all the interdisciplinary members of the design team involves graphic designers, programmers, game designers and experts in the content to be transmitted. The principle of unified blocks is applied to the fifteen contexts of an existing game, JUSEGU, for which five new contexts are included and implemented in this paper to increase its educational content.

Growing resistance to currently approved antibiotics is posing serious concern worldwide. The multidrug-resistant organisms are a major cause of mortality and morbidity around the globe. The limited options to treat infections caused by resistant organism requires alternative strategies to increase the effectiveness of antibiotic for better clinical outcomes. Recent advances in nanotechnology have enabled the drugs to be used in nanoscale to increase the effectiveness of antibiotics. The use of nanoparticles to treat infectious diseases has a long history in the pharmaceutical market, and the versatility of these particles to incorporate various materials as carriers make it an attractive option to combat the current crisis of emerging antibacterial resistance. Silver, a metal with many medical applications, has inherent antimicrobial properties. Therefore, silver NPs are appearing as one of the best options to be used in combination with antibiotics to increase effectiveness against resistant bacteria. Here, we discuss the applications and mechanisms of silver NPs to treat microbial resistance in light of recent research.

Abstract Based on the reported nucleation mechanisms for CsPbX3 and II-VI/IV-VI quantum dots, CsPbBr3 nanoparticles with a high reaction-yield, up to 393% mass-increment, were synthesized by the hot-injection method. The introduction of diphenylphosphine (DPP) as a reducing agent improved nanoparticle nucleation and growth, giving out evidence for Pb-seeding in CsPbBr3 nanoparticles formation. Additionally, a clear influence of the DPP in a CsPbBr3-Cs4PbBr6 incomplete phase transformation was observed, marked by the appearance of several PbBr2 nanoparticles, indicating the need for an improved ratio between the stabilizing agents and the precursors, due to the increased number of nucleation sites produced by the DPP. The resulting CsPbBr3 nanoparticles showed high quality, as they displayed 70%-90% photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), narrow size distribution with an average nanoparticle size of ~10 nm and the characteristic cubic morphology reported in previous works. This increment in CsPbBr3 nanoparticles’ reaction yield will contribute to making them a more attractive option for different optoelectronic applications.

In some vein of galen aneurysmal malformation (VGAM) patients, transvenous embolization (TVE) is an attractive option, but its safety is unclear. Here we report the first two VGAM patients treated using the Chapot “pressure cooker” technique (ChPC). Methods Two patients, one 5-year-old and one 7-year-old, both presented with congestive heart failure in the newborn period and were subsequently treated in the newborn period with multiple, staged TAEs with n-BCA for choroidal VGAMs. Results We achieved progressive reduction in shunting and flow but were unable to accomplish complete closure of the malformation: in both patients, a small residual with numerous perforators persisted. The decision was made to perform TVE using the CHPC. In this technique, a guiding catheter is placed transjugular into the straight sinus (SS). One or two detachable tip microcatheters are advanced to the origin of the SS. Another microcatheter is advanced and the tip placed between the distal marker and the detachment zone of the former. Coils and n-BCA are used to prevent reflux of Onyx. Conclusions In this study, we recognized two important factors of traditional VGAM treatment that may cause interventionalists to consider the ChPC to treat VGAM: (1) without liquid embolic, deployed coils may not occlude the fistula entirely. (2) There is the concern of causing delayed bleeding should the arterial component of the fistula rupture. ChPC ameliorates these issues by offering complete closure of the fistula with liquid embolic material in TVE.

Blocking the Continuum Argument for the Repugnant Conclusion by an appeal to incommensurabilities in value, as suggested in Parfit (2016), is an attractive option. But incommensurabilities (‘imprecise equalities’ in Parfit’s terminology) that need to be posited to achieve this result have to be very thoroughgoing – ‘persistent’ in the sense to be explained. While this persistency is highly atypical, it can be explained if incommensurability is interpreted on the lines of the fitting-attitudes analysis of value, as permissibility of divergent attitudes towards the items that are being compared. More precisely, it can be interpreted as parity – as the permissibility of opposing preferences with respect to the compared items. This account makes room for the persistency phenomena. Nevertheless, some of Parfit’s substantive value assumptions must be given up, to avoid implausible implications. In particular, his Simple View regarding the marginal value of added lives cannot be retained.

Abstract Background: Laparoscopic repairs have gained gradual acceptance in pediatric inguinal hernia over the past decade. However, consensus about the optimal management is still lacking. The aim of this study is to present a modified single-needle laparoscopic approach with the assistance of a laparoscope and to evaluate the surgical outcomes in comparison with traditional open repair method. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical data of children who underwent laparoscope-assisted single-needle laparoscopic percutaneous extraperitoneal closure (LPEC) and open repair (OR) for inguinal hernia from 2014 to 2019. Data were reviewed and analyzed with respect to the operating time, the incidence of metachronous contralateral inguinal hernia (MCIH), recurrence, and other complications. Results: In our cohort, 961 patients in the OR group and 1098 patients in the LPEC group were analyzed retrospectively. Mean operative time was significantly shorter in the LPEC group (22.3±3.5 min) than in the OR group (27.8±5.9 min) for bilateral hernia repair (p<0.001). Iatrogenic cryptorchidism occurred statistically more frequently in the OR group than in the LPEC group (0.4% vs. 0%, p=0.013). In addition, the incidence of MCIH was 3.7% (33/887) in the OR group and 0.3% (3/1014) in the LPEC group (p<0.01). Conclusion: Based on the current outcomes, laparoscope-assisted single-needle LPEC provides a simple and attractive option for the administration of pediatric patients with inguinal hernia/hydrocele to reduce the MCIH.
