Purpose This paper aims to review the latest management developments across the globe and pinpoint practical implications from cutting-edge research and case studies. Design/methodology/approach This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context. Findings This research paper concentrates on understanding the relationship between dynamic capability, absorptive capacity, and market orientation, in the context of how this affects new product performance in some of Brazil's technology-based firms (TBFs). Absorptive capacity alone wasn't deemed enough to boost new product performance, as it needs to be combined with dynamic capabilities to achieve this effect. Both proactive and responsive market orientations boosted dynamic capability in the TBFs, and in turn that dynamic capability then increased new product performance. Originality/value The briefing saves busy executives, strategists and researchers hours of reading time by selecting only the very best, most pertinent information and presenting it in a condensed and easy-to-digest format.

Purpose It should be highlighted that innovation is related to the absorption of knowledge, dynamicity and market orientation, with these elements seeking to aid efficiency, increasing firms’ competitive advantage. This study aims to gauge the influence of absorptive capacity, dynamic capability and market orientation on new product performance in Brazilian technology-based firms. Design/methodology/approach The study was characterized as quantitative, using primary data from Brazilian technology-based firms, as they are dynamic contexts that stimulate the absorption and exchange of knowledge and other organizational resources. It should be highlighted that this study received funding from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development. The research hypotheses were empirically tested, confirming the relationship between dynamic capability and absorptive capacity, market orientation and new product performance. Findings Regarding the empirical contribution of the research results, it could be argued that for the purpose of improving performance in innovation, reflected in new product performance, companies need to develop strategies that correspond to market demand. Furthermore, these empirical findings provide an integrating view of the constructs and identify the importance of companies anticipating and responding to the demands of their customers quickly so that they can enjoy better performance. Therefore, companies need to adjust their processes, resources and capabilities to obtain better results, and for this, the involvement of managers is fundamental because they are the only ones with the clout to stimulate such initiatives. This approach favors recognizing and valuing absorptive capacity and dynamic capabilities and helps to identify new constructs such as responsive and proactive market orientation, which need to be adequately developed by managers to create competitive advantages that stem from better new product performance. Research limitations/implications A limitation of the study is that it does not address a specific analysis of the sector in which the technology-based firms (TBFs) under study operate. No tests were conducted regarding whether it is possible to perceive different structural paths for absorptive capacity, market orientation, dynamic capability and new product performance according to the sector of the TBFs. Practical implications Regarding the empirical contribution of the research results, it could be argued that for the purpose of improving performance in innovation, reflected in new product performance, companies need to develop strategies that correspond to market demand. Furthermore, these empirical findings provide an integrating view of the constructs and identify the importance of companies anticipating and responding to the demands of their customers quickly so that they can enjoy better performance. Therefore, companies need to adjust their processes, resources and capabilities to obtain better results and, for this, the involvement of managers is fundamental because they are the only ones with the clout to stimulate such initiatives. Social implications One of the main contributions of the study is that it provides an empirical demonstration that on its own absorptive capacity cannot boost new product performance. For this purpose, it needs to be combined with dynamic capabilities. Through this proposed model, it was possible to characterize the antecedent relationship of absorptive capacity and illustrate its relationship with dynamic capabilities. Another relevant theoretical contribution is the statistical proof of the positive relationship of both proactive and responsive market orientation with dynamic capability, and that dynamic capability has a positive influence on new product performance, which will generate better financial performance of TBFs. Originality/value As a contribution to the field, it was empirically demonstrated that on its own absorptive capacity cannot improve new product performance. For this to occur, it must be combined with dynamic capabilities. Through the proposed model, it is possible to characterize the antecedent relationship of absorptive capacity and illustrate its relationship with dynamic capability.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to review and re-examine the role of the organization-level determinants from the perspectives of competence-based views. Design/methodology/approach Regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses in a sample of 80 cases drawn from a population of the top 5,000 Taiwanese firms listed in the yearbook published by the China Credit Information Service Incorporation. Findings The empirical results indicate that formalization is positively related to new product performance while decentralization has an inverse U-shaped curvilinear effect on new product performance. Furthermore, the regression findings also indicate that market-oriented strategy negatively moderates the relationship between formalization and new product performance, while technology-oriented strategy positively moderates the curvilinear relationship between decentralization and new product performance. Originality/value Extant literatures have paid attention to investigating the determinants to the performance of the new product development, but some of the results, such as in the organizational levels, are confusing and mixed. Contrary to previous works, the purpose of this paper is to review and re-examine the role of the organization levels determinants from the perspectives of competence-based view.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the joint influence of technological newness (TN) and market newness (MN) on the relationship between customer involvement (CI) and new product performance. Design/methodology/approach The authors employed hierarchical moderated regression analysis to test the hypothesized relationships using survey data collected from 214 Chinese manufacturing firms. Findings The authors found that the impact of CI on new product performance varies across the different configurations of TN and MN. Specifically, the performance effect of CI is most positive under low TN and high MN, while the performance effect is least positive under low TN and low MN. Originality/value This study enriches CI research by identifying different configurations of product innovativeness that augment or limit the value of CI.

New product innovation and R&D are important sources for firms to obtain competitive advantages, and market knowledge is the core element for firms to obtain new product innovation performance. However, it can be also found out that the relevant discussion upon innovation has been still limited to restricted theories and the developing empirical researching area by reviewing the literature. Based on knowledge-based theory, a questionnaire survey of 220 high-technology and internet firms in China was conducted to empirically analyze the relationship between innovation driven, potential absorptive capacity, and new product innovation performance. The study found that: the potential absorptive capacity mediates the relationship between market orientation and new product performance, technological opportunity and new product performance, and the potential absorptive capability positively adjusts the relationship between technological opportunities and realized absorptive capacity. It is possible to understand more clearly the process of firms acquiring and digesting information, transforming and mining knowledge to achieve new product innovation performance by analyzing the process of knowledge absorption and conversion.

Purpose Based on the resource-based view and dynamic capabilities theory, this study aims to examine the complementarity between market orientations and launch proficiency as a driver of new product performance. Design/methodology/approach In this research, an on-site survey of Iranian, research and development- intensive, manufacturing firms was carried out to examine the proposed hypotheses. Based on the 179 workable survey responses, a covariance-based structural equation modeling was applied to verify the proposed theoretical model. Findings The empirical findings reveal that the effects of market orientation or launch proficiency alone are not significant while the complementarity between them significantly influences new product performance. These research outcomes suggest that this complementarity leads to a bidirectional co-specialization relationship in firms, promoting both market intelligence generation processes and product-launch capabilities, and therefore resulting in superior new product performance. Originality/value The current characterization of the resource-based theory signifies that strategic resources merely have potential value and actualizing this value needs complementary organizational capabilities. Furthermore, the literature notably lacks empirical findings supporting these complementarities. Therefore, the findings concerning the bidirectional co-specialization between market orientation and launch proficiency not only provide empirical support for the dynamic capabilities theory but also address recent research calls to identify and calibrate the importance of dynamic capabilities for leveraging market orientation on new product performance.

Purpose Learning orientation is critical in new product development. However, research has disregarded how learning orientation operates via the potential mediator to influence new product performance. The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating role of ambidextrous capability in the relationship between learning orientation and new product performance. Design/methodology/approach The empirical study uses a questionnaire approach designed to collect data for testing research hypotheses. This study tests the hypotheses using structural equation model in a sample of 336 firms in Taiwan. Findings The findings indicate that learning orientation relates positively to ambidextrous capability and new product performance. Ambidextrous capability, in turn, relates positively to new product performance. The results also support the argument that ambidextrous capability plays a mediating role in learning orientation and new product performance. Originality/value The value of this study is to identify ambidextrous capability as the potential mediator in the relationship between learning orientation and new product performance. The results enrich the understanding of learning orientation in new product project teams and suggest important implications for new product development and future research.

Purpose This paper aims to propose and test a model examining the relationship of guanxi with new product performance and customer loyalty in the context of internationalizing small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in China. Social network theory and information processing theory provide the theoretical lenses for this research. Design/methodology/approach Guanxi with suppliers, distributors and customers is measured as a second-order construct consisting of ganqing, renqing, and xinren/xinyong. Research hypotheses are tested using survey data (n = 212) gathered in Anhui and Shandong Provinces. The data are analyzed using smart partial least squares technique. Findings The findings reinforce existing studies, which show that a locally based social network can be extended to the success of early-internationalizing SMEs. Results also suggest that the relationship between guanxi and customer loyalty is stronger when technical uncertainty is low and when market uncertainty is low rather than high. Research limitations/implications The data were gathered from the point of view of the SMEs and may not accurately reflect the perspective of the foreign customer. The findings may not generalize beyond the regions surveyed. The study does not differentiate among the type of supply chain member, and the location of the supply chain member was not measured. Practical implications Although guanxi is typically viewed as being localized within a country, guanxi with suppliers, distributors and customers can provide information and resources needed for successful export products. Second, internationalizing SMEs must understand that even though guanxi has positive impact on new product performance which directly leads to customer loyalty only when uncertainty is low. Originality/value Although guanxi has been studied, there are a limited number of empirical studies of guanxi in a supply chain context and most focus on buyers’ guanxi with suppliers. The research on guanxi with customers and distributors is also limited. This research addresses this gap by focusing on guanxi with suppliers, distributors and customers.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the relationship between changes in relative influence between marketing and R&D and new product performance (NPP). The aim is to theorize and test whether relative influence changes are beneficial for NPP. Design/methodology/approach An international survey was sent out to pharmaceutical companies worldwide, resulting in 106 usable questionnaires from knowledgeable senior managers. A model is estimated that relates recent and historic changes in relative influence to NPP. Findings There is a positive relationship between recent relative influence changes and subsequent NPP. Moreover, this paper finds that having a history of adaptation with respect to relative influence can serve organizations to build up capabilities that, in turn, strengthen the positive effects of recent relative influence changes on NPP. Finally, the paper shows that relative influence changes and integration between marketing and R&D positively affect NPP jointly. Originality/value A core finding, that is quite counterintuitive, is that instability with respect to relative influence changes can help organizations to become more competitive in new product development.
