The changing climate affects the agricultural lands, and, in turn, the changes in agricultural lands alter the watershed. A major concern regarding waterbodies is the increased sedimentation rates due to climate change. To improve the water quality, it is crucial to remove fine sediments. Using current environmental dredging methods is challenging because of the sediment volumes that must be dredged, the absence of nearby disposal sites, and the shoreline infrastructure at the dredging locations. To address these issues, we used a surgical dredging method with a variable area suction head that can easily maneuver around the docks, pilings, and other infrastructures. It can also isolate the fine grain material to better manage the dredged volumes in the seabed where nutrients are typically adhered. To this end, a statistical analysis of the dredged samples is essential to improve the design efficiency. In this work, we collected several samples using a variable area suction head with different design settings. The collected samples using each design setting were then used to model the distributions of the different grain sizes in the dredged sediments. The proposed statistical model can be effectively used for the prediction of sediment sampling outcomes to improve the gradation of the fine sediments.

SUMMARYWe present a new numerical optimal design for a redundant parallel manipulator, the eclipse, which has a geometrically symmetric workspace shape. We simultaneously consider the structural mass and design efficiency as objective functions to maximize the mass reduction and minimize the loss of design efficiency. The task-oriented workspace (TOW) and its partial workspace (PW) are considered in efficiently obtaining an optimal design by excluding useless orientations of the end-effector and by including just one cross-sectional area of the TOW. The proposed numerical procedure is composed of coarse and fine search steps. In the coarse search step, we find the feasible parameter regions (FPR) in which the set of parameters only satisfy the marginal constraints. In the fine search step, we consider the multiobjective function in the FPR to find the optimal set of parameters. In this step, fine search will be kept until it reaches the optimal set of parameters that minimize the proposed objective functions by continuously updating the PW in every iteration. By applying the proposed approach to an eclipse-rapid prototyping machine, the structural mass of the machine can be reduced by 8.79% while the design efficiency is increased by 6.2%. This can be physically interpreted as a mass reduction of 49 kg (the initial structural mass was 554.7 kg) and a loss of 496 mm3/mm in the workspace volume per unit length. The proposed optimal design procedure could be applied to other serial or parallel mechanism platforms that have geometrically symmetric workspace shapes.

Secondary develop system can realize design automation of the common parts, so that software system can automatically inquire the chart and get data, then this could really release design personnel and improve the design efficiency. By secondary develop system of stirred tank users can respectively carry on the design according to their own needs. So secondary develop system has the function of automatic generation graphics, and can generate CAD drawings complying with the design requirement, so it reflected the intelligent performance of the design system. Secondary develop system is able to complete the automatic design of common parts, and can greatly improve the quality and efficiency of design, so it has very important use value. This design realizes the function of automatic graphics generation of transmission of stirred tank, and can generate structure design of common belt wheel.

A common method to precisely control the material properties is to evenly distribute functional nanomaterials within the substrate. For example, it is possible to mix a silk solution and nanomaterials together to form one tuned silk sample. However, the nanomaterials are likely to aggregate in the traditional manual mixing processes. Here we report a pilot study of utilizing specific microfluidic mixing designs to achieve a uniform nanomaterial distribution with minimal aggregation. Mixing patterns are created based on classic designs and then validated by experimental results. The devices are fabricated on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) using 3D printed molds and soft lithography for rapid replication. The initial mixing performance is validated through the mixing of two solutions with colored dyes. The microfluidic mixer designs are further analyzed by creating silk-based film samples. The cured film is inspected with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to reveal the distribution uniformity of the dye particles within the silk material matrix. Our preliminary results show that the microfluidic mixing produces uniform distribution of dye particles. Because the microfluidic device can be used as a continuous mixing tool, we believe it will provide a powerful platform for better preparation of silk materials. By using different types of nanomaterials such as graphite (demonstrated in this study), graphene, carbon nanotubes, and magnetic nanoparticles, the resulting silk samples can be fine-tuned with desired electrical, mechanical, and magnetic properties.

Reverse engineering has gained importance over the past few years due to an intense competitive market aiding in the survivability of a company. This paper examines the reverse engineering process and what, how, and why it can assist in making a better design. Two well known reverse engineering methodologies are explored, the first by Otto and Wood and the second by Ingle. Each methodology is compared and contrasted according to the protocols and tools used. Among some of the reverse engineering tools detailed and illustrated are: Black box, Fishbone, Function Structure, Bill of Material, Exploded CAD models, Morphological Matrix, Subtract and Operate Procedure (SOP), House of Quality matrix, and FMEA. Even though both methodologies have highly valued tools, some of the areas in reverse engineering need additional robust tooling. This paper presents new and expanded tooling to augment the existing methods in hopes of furthering the understanding of the product, and process. Tools like Reverse Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (RFMEA), Connectivity graphs, and inter-relation matrix increase the design efficiency, quality, and the understanding of the reverse engineering process. These tools have been employed in two industry projects and one demonstrative purpose for a Design for Manufacture Class. In both of these scenarios, industry and academic, the users found that the augmented tools were useful in capturing and revealing information not previously realized.

In view of sofa product’s features such as demand of great types and inefficient design, the paper presents a method of parametric design on the simple sofa based on RhinoScript. With analysis of simple sofa’s modeling characteristics, the model of simple sofa could be presented by different parameters. Then models of different sizes and appearance styles could be created easily and quickly by inputting different parameters. This method improves the design efficiency and avoids industrial designers’ repeat work. The design process of a kind of simple sofa testified the method and a series of sofa proposals were easily generated.
