Active tactile exploration behaviour is constrained to a large extent by the morphological and biomechanical properties of the animal's somatosensory system. In the model organism Carausius morosus , the main tactile sensory organs are long, thin, seemingly delicate, but very robust antennae. Previous studies have shown that these antennae are compliant under contact, yet stiff enough to maintain a straight shape during active exploration. Overcritical damping of the flagellum, on the other hand, allows for a rapid return to the straight shape after release of contact. Which roles do the morphological and biomechanical adaptations of the flagellum play in determining these special mechanical properties? To investigate this question, we used a combination of biomechanical experiments and numerical modelling. A set of four finite-element (FE) model variants was derived to investigate the effect of the distinct geometrical and material properties of the flagellum on its static (bending) and dynamic (damping) characteristics. The results of our numerical simulations show that the tapered shape of the flagellum had the strongest influence on its static biomechanical behaviour. The annulated structure and thickness gradient affected the deformability of the flagellum to a lesser degree. The inner endocuticle layer of the flagellum was confirmed to be essential for explaining the strongly damped return behaviour of the antenna. By highlighting the significance of two out of the four main structural features of the insect flagellum, our study provides a basis for mechanical design of biomimetic touch sensors tuned to become maximally flexible while quickly resuming a straight shape after contact.

Determination of resonant stresses is an important step in the life estimation of turbomachine blades. Resonance may occur either at a steady operating speed or under transient conditions of operation when the blade passes through a critical speed. Damping plays a significant role in limiting the amplitudes of vibration and stress values. The blade damping mechanism is very complex in nature, because of interfacial slip, material hysteresis, and gas dynamic damping occurring simultaneously. In this paper, a numerical technique to compute the stress response of a turbine blade with nonlinear damping characteristics, during steady and transient operations of the rotor, is presented. Damping is defined as a function of vibratory mode, rotor speed, and strain amplitude. The technique is illustrated by computing the stress levels at resonant rotor speeds for typical operation of a turbomachine.

Abstract A variable parameter model to study dynamic tire responses is presented. A modified device to measure terrain roughness is used to measure dynamic damping and stiffness characteristics of rolling tires. The device was used to examine the dynamic behavior of a tire in the speed range from 0 to 10 km/h. The inflation pressure during the tests was adjusted to 160, 240, and 320 kPa. The vertical load was 5.2 kN. The results indicate that the damping and stiffness decrease with velocity. Regression formulas for the non-linear experimental damping and stiffness are obtained. These results can be used as input parameters for vehicle simulation to evaluate the vehicle's driving and comfort performance in the medium-low frequency range (0–100 Hz). This way it can be important for tire design and the forecasting of the dynamic behavior of tires.

The article investigates the reflection of a longitudinal damped travelling wave from the transverse notch and its movement along an infinite rod plunged into viscous liquid. The simplest model for the stress deformed state in the notch zone is applied. The solution is found to depend on the parameters of the liquid and damping characteristics in the material of the rod and the surrounding liquid. The solution to the inverse problem makes it possible to define the coordinate of the notch and the parameter that contains its depth and length using data on both the incident and reflected waves at the observation point.

Purpose: We aim to provide a systematic methodology for the optimal design of MRD for improved damping capacity and dynamical adjustability in performing its damping function. Methods: A modified Bingham model is employed to model and simulate the MRD considering the MR fluid’s compressibility. The parameters that describe the structure of MRD and the property of the fluid are systematically examined for their contributions to the damping capacity and dynamically adjustability. A response surface method is employed to optimize the damping force and dynamically adjustable coefficient for a more practical setting related to the parameters. Results: The simulation system effectively shows the hysteretic characteristics of MRDs and shows our common sense understanding that the damping gap width and yoke diameter have significant effects on the damping characteristics of MRD. By taking a typical MRD device setup, optimal design shows an increase of the damping force by 33% and an increase of the dynamically adjustable coefficient by 17%. It is also shown that the methodology is applicable to other types of MDR devices. Conclusion: The compressibility of MR fluid is one of the main reasons for the hysteretic characteristics of MRD. The proposed simulation and optimization methods can effectively improve the MRD’s damping performance in the design stage.

This paper presents the damping characteristics of a linear magneto-rheological (MR) damper with dual controllable ducts based on numerical and experimental analysis. The novel MR damper consisting of a dual-rod cylinder system and a MR valve is used to reduce the influences of viscous damping force and improve dynamic range. Driven by the dual-rod cylinder system, MR fluid flows in the MR valve. The pressure drop of the MR valve with dual independent controllable ducts can be controlled by tuning the current of two independent coils. Based on the mathematical model and the finite element method, the damping characteristics of the MR damper is simulated. A prototype is designed and tested on MTS machine to evaluate its damping characteristics. The results show that the working states and damping force of the MR damper can be controlled by the two independent coils.
