The recently introduced relevance vector machine (RVM) technique is applied to predict seismic attenuation based on rock properties. The RVM provides much sparser regressors without compromising performance, and kernel bases give a small but worthwhile improvement in performance. It evades complexity by producing models that have structure and as a result parameterization process that is appropriate to the information content of the data. Sensitivity analysis has been also performed to investigate the importance of each of the input parameters. The results show that RVM approach has the potential to be a practical tool for determination of seismic attenuation.

Summary. Purpose. Having based on the determination of the degree of effectiveness and information content of the diagnostic methods for traumatic injuries of the spleen, to analyze the results of the instrumental diagnostic methods to create an algorithm for diagnostic and treatment tactics. Materials and methods: 355 victims were hospitalized with traumatic injuries of the spleen. Of these, physical and laboratory diagnostic methods were used in 100 % of cases, laparoscopy — 245 patients (69 %), laparocentesis — 21 (6 %), laparotomy —- 75 (21 %), ultrasound — 199 (56 %), x-ray — 67 (19 %), CT — 7 (2 %). Research results and discussion. The most informative diagnostic method is laparotomy. Of minimally invasive methods — laparoscopy, and of non-invasive methods — ultrasound. Conclusions. For successful recognition of spleen damage, it is necessary to use complex examination methods, depending on the indication developed for them, that significantly reduces the duration of the diagnostic phase.

A new requirement in the Nigerian Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) of 1990 is the introduction of audit committees as an additional layer of control and certification in the bid to make annual accounts of public corporations more acceptable and reliable. This paper reviews the law and practice of audit committees in Nigeria. It argues that for audit committees to become more useful in the Nigerian context there is need for changes to be made in both its law and practice. Key areas of concern include the need to: determine and codify the qualification for membership of the committee given its technical nature; allow appropriate remuneration for committee members, and; the determination of appropriate membership tenure for such committees. The above review is necessary if audit committees are to be in a position to effectively perform their oversight functions aimed at improving the quality and information content of corporate financial reports.

The article discusses the results of determining the concentration of wear products in oil of marine diesel gearbox units on fishing vessels in order to use them for in-place diagnostics without dismantling. It was stated that the ultimate goal of diagnostics of wear products consists of identifying the increased wear rate, taking appropriate measures and predicting a possible accident. There has been brought the statistics for several years of monitoring different gearbox types: TKG2-0350 unit of Atlantic-335 type ships, SL2×3000 unit of Horizont type ships, gearbox of Atlantic-488 type ship, main gearbox of Kiev type ship, gearbox of Alpinist type ship. A formula for theoretical determination of the wear product concentration in lubricating oil is given, and a curve of the changing concentration of wear products has been illustrated. Conclusions are made about the information content and reliability of using the wear product concentration as a diagnostic parameter to determine the technical condition of the gearbox. The main reasons for the low information content of the method for determining the wear products in oil are provided. High metal concentrations in wear products in lubricating oil do not necessarily confirm the fact of accidental wear of gearbox parts. Instead of disassembling the gearbox, which leads to decreasing its resources, it is necessary to carry out diagnostics using various methods. It is recommended to analyze the wear degree of gearbox parts at least twice a year (after every six months of operation). There have been offered the reliable ways for improving the wear product diagnostic method.

The distribution of ventilation per unit volume (Va/Vol) in the lung is often studied using the multibreath N2 washout test. Most approaches have focused on the determination of a single Va/Vol distribution (consisting of from two compartments to a continuum) compatible with the data, but because the potential number of lung units greatly exceeds the number of breaths measured, many distributions are usually compatible with a given set of washout data. Interpretation of single distributions therefore requires evaluation of the variability among all such compatible distributions. The technique of linear programing is well suited to evaluation of these compatible distributions and its application to the N2 washout is explained. Twelve examples of washout data are analyzed in this way. The results indicate that using the first 20 or so breaths of the washout, narrow distributions of Va/Vol are well specified. Distributions with up to four distinct modes are also well specified, but for broad distributions the shape cannot be adequately defined. Good resolution in the region of high Va/Vol is found to be critically dependent on measuring the first few breaths of the washout.

Amortization requirement of goodwill asset is one of the most controversial issues in financial reporting. This study provides empirical evidence on whether goodwill amortization has significant impact on equity value. It analyses the information content of goodwill amortization in the determination of firm’s market valuation by Emirates Financial Market Listed companies that clearly reported goodwill amortization over the period 2003 to 2012 inclusive. Evidence suggests that there is a statistically significant association between equity market values and goodwill amortization in the determination of firms’ market valuation, concluding that the UAE market perceives goodwill amortization as having information content when valuing firms and the use of standardized amortization requirement may be appropriate.

Clinical strains of Staphylococcus aureus were tested for hemolytic activity on blood agar, in the PCR test and by analyzing the gene alleles of hemolytic toxins. The study analyzed the information content of the phenotypic determination of hemolytic activity to assess the pathogenic properties of S. aureus isolates.
