The use of technology for educational purposes is a consolidated reality, and many new tools are constantly being devised and offered for use with both normally developing children and children with special needs. Nonetheless, a detailed analysis of the processes being stimulated and of the goals being pursued is often lacking or absent. In this work we describe the design, development and preliminary testing of an integrated system which combines the use of smart devices, a physical cube, augmented reality (AR) technology, a smart TV, and a software application especially designed to stimulate cognitive and social functions in pre-school children. The system was tested with three groups of children (25 children in total) during kindergarten activities. The results show that the system is easy to understand, elicits high levels of participation and social interaction, favors strategic behaviors, and can be used by the children with limited need of instruction and support by the adult. The implications for empowerment in typically developing children and the possibilities for use with children who have specific impairments in social communication are discussed.

© 2016 by the Ecological Society of America. Encounter competition is interference competition in which animals directly contend for resources. Ecological theory predicts the trait that determines the resource holding potential (RHP), and hence the winner of encounter competition, is most often body size or mass. The difficulties of observing encounter competition in complex organisms in natural environments, however, has limited opportunities to test this theory across diverse species. We studied the outcome of encounter competition contests among mesocarnivores at deer carcasses in California to determine the most important variables for winning these contests. We found some support for current theory in that body mass is important in determining the winner of encounter competition, but we found that other factors including hunger and species-specific traits were also important. In particular, our top models were "strength and hunger" and "size and hunger," with models emphasizing the complexity of variables influencing outcomes of encounter competition. In addition, our wins above predicted (WAP) statistic suggests that an important aspect that determines the winner of encounter competition is species-specific advantages that increase their RHP, as bobcats (Lynx rufus) and spotted skunks (Spilogale gracilis) won more often than predicted based on mass. In complex organisms, such as mesocarnivores, species-specific adaptations, including strategic behaviors, aggressiveness, and weapons, contribute to competitive advantages and may allow certain species to take control or defend resources better than others. Our results help explain how interspecific competition shapes the occurrence patterns of species in ecological communities.

This paper studies how political cycles change the mix of industrial and residential land in urban land leasing. The mixture of different types of land leasing in cities affects urban landscape, resident welfare, and economic sustainability. Using prefecture-level panel data from China and statistical regressions, this paper finds that cities lease out 3% more industrial land, as a percentage of total annual urban land leasing, when their party committee secretaries have been in office for no more than two years. In the same period, they lease out 2% less residential land. This is explained by the strategic behaviors of party committee secretaries to increase their chances of political promotion. Urban land leasing fuels local economic performance and increases the chance of city leaders’ promotion. While the economic benefits of residential land are immediate, those of industrial land cannot be reaped until two years later. This divided timeline results in more aggressive leasing of industrial land early on in party committee secretaries’ service terms, and that of residential land later on. Mayors’ service terms do not have the same effect. This political cycle distorts the temporal and spatial distributions of industrial and residential land in cities, and results in inefficient land use and unstable real estate markets.

Traditional strategic management focuses on securing organizational assets and maximizing resources through top-down leadership and the formation of competitive strategies to advance market position, meet performance objectives, and gain competitive advantage. Top-down bureaucratic paradigms are not well suited for gaining an edge in the knowledge economy, and in many cases, these strategic behaviors are counterproductive. There is a growing need for alternative ways of thinking about strategic management and human resource development. Complexity science provides a new framework for 21st century strategic management. The complex responsive processes approach to strategic management strengthens employee engagement, knowledge creation, and organizational learning, and it improves performance, achievement of long-term competitive advantage, and strengthens intellectual capital.

As a predominant form of business organization, family firms have attracted increasing attention by scholars, and especially by those researching entrepreneurial orientation with the aim of better understanding of entrepreneurial activities pursued by enterprises. However, the literature on the confluence of entrepreneurial orientation and family firms has paid scant attention to the influence of affective and emotional factors. To cover this research gap, the authors analyze the impact of affective commitment and concern for socioemotional wealth preservation on entrepreneurial orientation. To do so, they performed an empirical study using the data collected from 342 small and mid-sized family firms from Portugal, a country where family firms are under-researched even though they make up the backbone of the economy. Results show that both affective commitment and socioemotional wealth positively impact entrepreneurial orientation, pointing to the need to further research the relationships between such factors and strategic behaviors in the family business context.

We study strategically missing data problems in predictive analytics with regression. In many real-world situations, such as financial reporting, college admission, job application, and marketing advertisement, data providers often conceal certain information on purpose in order to gain a favorable outcome. It is important for the decision-maker to have a mechanism to deal with such strategic behaviors. We propose a novel approach to handle strategically missing data in regression prediction. The proposed method derives imputation values of strategically missing data based on the Support Vector Regression models. It provides incentives for the data providers to disclose their true information. We show that with the proposed method imputation errors for the missing values are minimized under some reasonable conditions. An experimental study on real-world data demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
