Abstract As piezoelectric actuators are developed for high strokes and/or high force applications, the amount of piezoelectric material used in the actuator must also increase. Reducing the size of drive electronics becomes difficult using traditional linear power electronics packages when applications require as much as 40 μF of piezoelectric load. In order to efficiently drive piezoelectric actuator systems, bi-directional systems (drivers that recover the energy put into the piezoelectric capacitor) must be used. Since less than 10% of the power going into the piezoelectric actuator is real versus the large reactive load used to power the piezoelectric materials, bidirectional systems have a much higher efficiency. A comparison is made between traditional linear and PWM amplifier systems and tailored piezoelectric bi-directional driver systems. Bi-directional systems have power dissipation levels up to 1/8th those of traditional linear amplifier systems. In the course of the research both linear and PWM concepts were investigated. A rationale for comparing the overall efficiency of drive electronics systems is presented. Some innovative efficient concepts for piezoelectric system drivers are presented and discussed.

The energies of the α-particles from weak preparations of several new radioactive substances were measured in a grid ionization chamber filled with argon. The accurately known energies of α-particles from several well known sources were used for calibration. The voltage pulses produced by electron collection from the tracks were amplified in a linear amplifier of high stability and converted into flat-topped pulses. An accurately known voltage was subtracted, and the small residual pulses were further amplified. The frequency distribution of pulse sizes was recorded on an electronic pulse analyzer. The final values of the energies are as follows:92U233, 4.823 ± 0.003; 89Ac225, 5.801 ± 0.010; 87Fr221, 6.298 ± 0.010;85At217, 7.023 ± 0.010; 84Po213, 8.336 ± 0.005; and 94Pu239, 5.159 ± 0.005 Mev.The ionization–energy curve in argon was found to be linear within experimental error for α-particles of energy 5 to 9 Mev. Extrapolation of this line determines an intercept of 85 kev. at zero ionization.

The design of a 2.4GHz radio-over-fiber (ROF) laser diode drive amplifier using TSMC 0.18-um CMOS technology is presented in this paper. The proposed drive amplifier is a single-ended two-stage amplifier with the operating voltages of 1.8V and 3.3V. The technique of dynamic bias is employed to enhance linearity. The post simulation results show that the linear amplifier achieves the power gain of 26.26dB, the output 1dB compression point of 20.49dBm at 2.4GHz. The maximum power added efficiency (PAE) is 27.97%. The components are all on chip including the input and output matching network, and the die size is 1.065mm×0.73mm.

We address de-Gaussification of continuous variables Gaussian states by optimal non-deterministic noiseless linear amplifier (NLA) and analyze in details the properties of the amplified states. In particular, we investigate the entanglement content and the non-Gaussian character for the class of non-Gaussian entangled state obtained by using NL-amplification of two-mode squeezed vacua (twin-beam, TWB). We show that entanglement always increases, whereas improved EPR correlations are observed only when the input TWB has low energy. We then examine a Braunstein-Kimble-like protocol for the teleportation of coherent states, and compare the performances of TWB-based teleprotation with those obtained using NL-amplified resources. We show that teleportation fidelity and security may be improved for a large range of NLA parameters (gain and threshold).
