A construction of breakwaters and other shoreline structures on part of a coast influences drift sand transport in the bay, and causes comprehensive topographic changes on the beach. This study investigated shoreline and coastal changes, taking as an example of Shiraragahama Beach in Miiraku on the northwestern end of Fukue Island, Nagasaki Prefecture (Kyushu, Japan). Miiraku, adjacent to Saikai National Park, appears in the revered 8th century poetry collection “Manyoshu” and served as a port for a ship taken by the Japanese envoy to China during the Tang Dynasty (618-709). Because of the recent development of breakwaters for a fishing harbor, the shore environments of this beach have changed significantly. In this study, the status of silt deposits and topographic changes on this beach arising from the construction of a harbor breakwater were evaluated by comparing aerial photographs taken in different years. Next, the changes in the shoreline visible from aerial photographs from 1947 to 2014 were analyzed. Lastly, the altitude of the beaches was measured using accurate survey methods. The following results were obtained: 1) coastal erosion made rock cliffs to fall off along the shore and deposited sand on this beach; 2) the more serious advances or retreats of the shoreline took place around shoreline structures; 3) sandbars and beach cliffs were formed.

This research aims to evaluate the amount of vertical ground movements during Roman times inside the archaeological area of Portus Julius (Gulf of Pozzuoli) using high-precision surveys on the most reliable archaeological sea-level markers. Measuring the submersion of ancient floors, structural elements belonging to a former fish tank, and several roman pilae, two different relative sea levels (RSLs), related to the beginning and the end of the first century BCE, respectively, −4.7/−5.20 m and −3.10 m MSL (mean sea level), were detected. A photogrammetric survey was carried out in order to produce a 3D model of the fish tank. The results in terms of the RSL variations have enabled us to reconstruct a morpho-evolution of the ancient coastal sector during the last 2.1 kyBP. At the beginning of the first century BCE, the area was characterized by a sheltered gulf with numerous maritime villae located along the coast. In 37 BCE, the construction of the military harbour of Portus Julius strongly modified the paleogeography of the sector, which was also affected by a prevailing subsidence at least until the end of the first century BCE (year 12 BCE), when the port was converted into a commercial hub.

Severe abrasion occurred in the coastal area of Brebes Regency, Central Java between 1985 and 1995. Since 1997, mangroves have been planted around the location as a measure intended to prevent further abrasion. Between 1996 and 2018, monitoring has been carried out to assess coastal change in the area and the growth and development of the mangroves. This study aims to monitor mangrove growth and its impact on coastal area changes on the north coast of Brebes, Central Java Province using Landsat series data, which has previously proven suitable for wetland studies including mangrove growth and change. Monitoring of mangrove growth was analysed using the normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) and the green normalised difference vegetation index (GNDVI) of the Landsat data, while the coastal change was analysed based on the overlaying of shoreline maps. Visual field observations of WorldView 2 images were conducted to validate the NDVI and GNDVI results. It was identified from these data that the mangroves had developed well during the monitoring period. The NDVI results showed that the total mangrove area increased between 1996 and 2018 about 9.82 km2, while the GNDVI showed an increase of 3.20 km2. Analysis of coastal changes showed that the accretion area about 9.17 km2 from 1996 to 2018, while the abrasion being dominant to the west of the Pemali River delta about 4.81 km2. It is expected that the results of this study could be used by government and local communities in taking further preventative actions and for sustainable development planning for coastal areas.

Coastal challenges ill West Crete ill the last 4000 years can be described as a series of 11 relatively small (25 cm on the average) land subsidences alternating with short (150-250 year long) relatively still stands of the sea level. At 1500 B.P. an up to 9 m episodic relative land uplift and tilting of this part of the island occurred, but since then no significant coastal changes have been identified. There is strong evidence that these Late Holocene coastal changes are not a product of fluctuations of sea level, but reflect palaeoseismic events. The sequence of the latter is at variance with models of seismic deformation deduced from a wide range of observations in different tectonic environments, including coastal uplifts near major trenches: according to these models, strain buildup and release through earthquakes is described as a cyclic and rather uniform process, the earthquake cycle. In this process, the permanent seismic deformation accumulates after each earthquake to produce geological features, while the long-term deformation rate is approximately equal to the short term one. Obviously this is not the case with West Crete. The unusual pattern of seismic deformation in this island has been observed in other cases as well, but its explanation is not easy. The juxtaposition of different earthquake cycles, variations in the source and rate of stress or internal deformation of the uplifted hanging wall of a thrust in the pre-seismic period are some possible explanations for this unusual pattern of earthquake cycle in Greece.

The coastal processes affecting Bethany Beach, Delaware were studied and the short-term and long-term trends in coastal changes were determined in order to develop recommendations for protecting Bethany against coastal erosion (Dick and Dalrymple, 1983). Bethany Beach is located on the Delaware Atlantic coastline which is a wide sandy baymouth barrier beach distinguished by highlands at Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach. The shoreline is straight, with only minor bulges and indentations (see Figure 1). Bethany Beach is a residential and resort community. Privatelyowned properties front the publicly-owned beach. Construction of new motels and summer homes is anticipated along with the continued growth of commercial activities to accommodate the increased number of visitors. Bethany is protected by a series of nine groins built between 1934 and 1945. Many of these groins have deteriorated, and are flanked at the landward end. Winter storms severely erode the beach and damage shorefront property. The beach is generally narrow (approximately 45 m wide), especially along the southern portion, and is backed by low dunes (about 15-45 m above NGVD). A timber bulkhead extends along most of the backshore.
