The design and implementation of healthcare information systems (HIS) is problematic as many HIS projects do not achieve the desired outcomes. There exist a number of theories to enhance our ability to successfully develop HIS. Examples of such theories include ‘fit’ and the sociotechnical approach. However, there are few empirical studies that illustrate how to understand and operationalize such theories at the empirical level needed for HIS design. This chapter introduces a practice support framework that bridges the gap between the theoretical and empirical aspects of HIS design by identifying specific process and information practice supports that need to be considered to actively produce fit of an HIS within a healthcare setting. The chapter also provides an empirical case study of how practice support was used to develop a computer based tool in the domain area of palliative care severe pain management.

The developing global information infrastructure (GII), together with strongly supported initiatives promoted by the World Trade Organization (WTO), is making it possible for electronic commerce to become a truly international activity. Quite clearly, in order to realize the potential of the Internet as a conduit for the development of an international marketplace, there will need to be changes to the current business and economic paradigms that underpin the working of successful offline businesses. In almost every country worldwide, new models of commercial interaction are being developed to support businesses and consumers so that they can fully participate in, and benefit from, the expanded marketplace. However, to make a success of such an activity requires more than enthusiasm by the international trading community, or an appreciation of new online business and economic paradigms, or access to modern computer-based communications technology; it also requires customers to be able to navigate and use the interface with success and understanding. This means that the developer and owner of the system, in addition to having a knowledge of online business, must have a keen understanding of the cultural and language attributes of their customers. In this chapter, the focus will be concerned partly with issues relating to the cultural interaction of the customer with the system, partly with the development of an international user interface, and partly with examining some of the technical problems relating to the design and implementation of multilingual interfaces.

Sigal, a second-grade girl in Israel, was observed for several months while practicing arithmetic with a structured and controlled computer-assisted instruction (CAI) system. Sigal was average in arithmetic in her class, enjoyed the computer practice, and believed that it helped her in arithmetic. However, observations showed that she consistently failed to solve problems on the computer that she could do successfully with paper and pencil. She was therefore given CAI practice well below her real arithmetic ability. She often oscillated among a few types of exercises, sometimes regressing rather than advancing upward in the hierarchical levels of practice. Several kinds of interventions did not bring about substantial improvement in her work with the computer. Continued observations in the following 2 years showed almost no change in her CAI-related behavior. This paper suggests the reasons for Sigal's problems with the CAI practice and draws implications for CAI design and implementation.

Developing a computer based system for examinations are the substitute for the current examination system based on paper. In recent days, the e-learning has become more popular because of its adaptability, integrity and user friendliness. In terms of the paper based examinations, major challenge is the proctoring techniques used. In this paper, a novel method to avoid the presence of a proctor throughout the examination is proposed by an intelligent based examination system. This method is proposed to improve the e-learning using intelligent question bank and examination system. The system is designed with different complexity levels among the questions and also it acts as a tool to assessing the understanding of student from the teaching materials. This system can be timesaving and more efficient with an adequate level of security. The proposed methodology can be classified in to two main phases such as the design of question bank along with its database, design of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) based system for examination and its evaluation in order to improve the e-learning. Future works in this system can be the addition of theory-based questions and the integration of biometric based systems for enhancing the level of security.

Kata kunci: Pemarkahan esei, sistem pengurusan tugasan, peralatan perisian, peralatan pemarkahan, penilaian pembelajaran This paper discusses an approach of developing a computer-based essay-marking tool. The marking tool has been implemented and integrated into CMS (Coursework Management System), a coursework management system that has been developed at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The paper will first discuss methods that lecturers normally used in marking essays and available automated essay marking systems, followed by a discussion on the design and implementation of the marking tool. This paper shows that a simple possible approach in developing a marking tool is by using available software tools, such as software tools that are provided by Microsoft Word. However, since software tools provided by Microsoft Word can only support the English language, this marking tools can only mark essays that are written in English. Key words: Essay marking, coursework management system, software tool, marking tool, learning assessment
