Cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin film photovoltaic devices fabricated in a-line process developed at Colorado State University (CSU) have shown stability during long-term (over a 5 year period) accelerated stress testing. These devices have a copper (Cu) containing back contact. The Cu profile as measured by secondary ion mass spectrometry characterization shows, for the maximum stressed device (23,399 h), that there is a significant (two times) change in the concentration of secondary Cu ions in the bulk of the material; however, the Cu concentration gradient at the back of the device has no significant change, and the CdS layer has no significant Cu concentration increase at open-circuit bias and 65°C temperature conditions. This indicates that with a proper CdCl2 treatment, Cu can be used to form the back contact for CdTe devices with acceptable stability. These devices have a projected field lifetime of greater than 60 years.

The use of implantable electronic cardiac devices is increasing. Post-implantation follow-up is important for monitoring both device function and patient condition; however, clinical practice is inconsistent. For example, implantable cardioverter–defibrillator follow-up schedules vary from every three months to yearly according to facility and physician preference and the availability of resources. Importantly, no surveillance occurs between follow-up visits. By contrast, implantable devices with automatic remote monitoring capability provide a means for performing constant surveillance, with the ability to identify salient problems rapidly. The Lumos-T Reduces Routine Office Device Follow-up Study (TRUST) demonstrated that remote home monitoring reduced clinic burden and allowed early detection of patient and/or system problems, enabling efficient monitoring and an opportunity to enhance patient safety. The results of the trial have significant implications for the management of patients receiving all forms of implantable electronic cardiac device.

AbstractWe have made a series of a-SiSx:H based solar cells, with a pin structure, in a multichamber plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system. The sulfur concentration ranges from zero to 5 x 1018 cm-3 as measured by secondary ion mass spectroscopy. The initial conversion efficiencies of cells in this series with sulfur concentrations ≤ 1018 cm-3 are approximately 7%. The time constants for degradation increase with increasing sulfur concentration, but not fast enough to be of practical importance in photovoltaic devices.
