Abstract In order to reach the inside surfaces of some workpieces, a prototype for milling extension is developed. The milling extension has a low static stiffness and is prone to machine tool chatter, therefore vibration control in this type of machining is of importance. The paper proposes the application of an active dynamic absorber to the milling process. A finite element model for the milling extension with consideration of the cutting dynamics is developed. An annular ring serving as the dynamic absorber mass is connected to the main system through active force generating systems which are piezoelectric translators functioning as actuators. The annular ring and the actuators are functioning as an active dynamic absorber in the theory to suppress the vibration of the milling system. Optimal control algorithms are used to calculate the Kalman feedback control for the equivalent lumped-mass milling structure model. Transient responses of the system are obtained. Oscillation of the milling extension equipped with the active dynamic absorber is attenuated appreciably, therefore the surface finish of a workpiece is improved. Harmonic responses are also obtained with and without the feedback control to show the superiority of the active control technique. A proof-of-concept experiment is designed and conducted to verify the theoretical prediction. Comparisons between the simulation and experimental results are made.

The motion of a particular degree-of-freedom in a harmonically excited conservative system can be vanished by attaching an appropriate dynamic absorber to it. It is shown here that under certain conditions, which are characterized in the paper, the steady state motion of a damped system may be completely absorbed, without loss of stability, by active control implementing a single sensor and an actuator. The results are established theoretically and they are demonstrated by means of analytical examples. [S0739-3717(00)02104-8]

Vibrations are usually undesired phenomena as they may cause discomfort, disturbance, damage, and sometimes destruction of machines and structures. It must be reduced or controlled or eliminated. One of the most common methods of vibration control is the use of the dynamic absorber. The paper is interested in the study of a nonlinear two degrees of freedom (DOF) model. To solve nonlinear equation of motion a high order implicit algorithm is proposed. It is based on the introduction of a homotopy, an implicit scheme of Newmark and the use of techniques of Asymptotic Numerical method (ANM). We propose also a regularization of the contact force to overcome the difficulty of the singularity in this model. A comparison will be presented between the results obtained by the proposed algorithm and those using the classical Newton–Raphson and Newmark time scheme.

Abstract Ropeways such as gondola lifts have attracted increasing interest as a means of transportation in cities. However, swing of ropeway carriers is easily caused by wind, and usually a ropeway cannot operate if the wind velocity exceeds about 15m/s. The study of how to reduce the wind-induced swing of ropeway carriers has attracted many researchers. It had been said that it was impossible to reduce the vibration of pendulum type structures such as ropeway carriers by a dynamic absorber. But in 1993, Matsuhisa showed that the swing of carrier can be reduced by a dynamic absorber if it is located far above or below from the center of oscillation. Based on this finding, a dynamic absorber composed of a moving mass on an arc-shaped track was designed for practical use, and it was installed in chairlift-type carriers and gondola type carriers in snow skiing sites in Japan in 1995 for the first time in the world. It has been shown that a dynamic absorber with the weight of one tenth of the carrier can reduce the swing to half. The liquid dynamic absorber was also investigated. It has the same damping effect as the conventional solid absorber. It is easy to adjust the natural frequency and the damping ratio, and the structure is simple. Therefore, it will be applied for not only ropeway carriers but also ships and rope suspended bridge and others.
