AbstractStarting with Maxwell’s equations, we derive the fundamental results of the Huygens-Fresnel-Kirchhoff and Rayleigh-Sommerfeld theories of scalar diffraction and scattering. These results are then extended to cover the case of vector electromagnetic fields. The famous Sommerfeld solution to the problem of diffraction from a perfectly conducting half-plane is elaborated. Far-field scattering of plane waves from obstacles is treated in some detail, and the well-known optical cross-section theorem, which relates the scattering cross-section of an obstacle to its forward scattering amplitude, is derived. Also examined is the case of scattering from mild inhomogeneities within an otherwise homogeneous medium, where, in the first Born approximation, a fairly simple formula is found to relate the far-field scattering amplitude to the host medium’s optical properties. The related problem of neutron scattering from ferromagnetic materials is treated in the final section of the paper.

AbstractThe defect structure of BaTiO3 thin films grown on (100) Si was examined using transient photocapacitance spectroscopy. The concentration, optical cross section and associated energy levels of both native and impurity defects in as-grown and annealed BaTiO3 films were evaluated. Deep level defects withpeak energies of Ev+1.8, Ev+2.4, Ev+2.7, Ev+3.0-3.1 and Ev+3.2-3.3 eV were observed in the as-grown films. Upon vacuum annealing, the concentration of the traps at Ev+3.0 and Ev+3.2 eV increased while the concentration of the traps at Ev+ 1.8 and Ev+2.4 eV decreased. The levels at Ev+3.0-3.1 and Ev+3.2-3.3 eV are attributed to oxygen vacancies. The other levels are tentatively ascribed to Fe and Fe related defects.

The xoy and xoz planes are divided into nine areas in three-dimensional space respectively by the MBR (Minimum Bounding Rectangle), which are produced by the reference objects’ projection to their planes. The intersecting situations between the projection of target objects and the two of reference objects are expressed by two 3×3 matrices. Then, a directional relations matrix model based on double projections is put forward. A combinational reasoning method is proposed by using the computational performance of matrices based on this model. Moreover, a combinational reasoning experiment is given and the result matches the reality.
