Purpose Wide-bandgap (WBG) semiconductors have emerged as a disruptive technology in the power electronics sphere. This paper aims to analyse and discuss the importance for induction heating systems and gives some examples and highlights some future design trends and perspectives. Design/methodology/approach The benefits of WBG semiconductors are reviewed with a special emphasis on induction heating applications. Findings WBG devices enable the design of higher-performance induction heating power supplies. A significant selection of the reported converters is discussed, highlighting the benefits of this technology. Originality/value This paper highlights the benefits of WBG semiconductors and their potential to change and improve induction heating technology in the next years.

Power MOSFETs based on 4H-SiC have recently been commercialized and so circuit designers require SPICE models for simulation purposes in a range of applications including switch-mode power supplies. We present a selection of SPICE LEVEL 3 parameters and equations that can be used for effective circuit simulation of these MOSFETs, taking into account their unique characteristics for both static and dynamic operation.

In this paper the influence of climatic parameters of building region on expedient depth of implementation of different ways of energy consumption decrease in civil buildings is reviewed. The data of multivariate calculations of power and technological efficiency of an adopted complex of energy saving measures for reference climatic zones of the terrain of Russia in modern economic conditions with allowance for discounting of costs are adduced. The analysis of the obtained outcomes is given and the guidelines are also offered at the choice of optimum combination of the solutions on a decrease of power inputs at exploitation of a building depending on the number of degree‐days of the heating season, as well as on established prices for stuffs both equipment and fares on power supplies. Santrauka Straipsnyje išnagrinėta statybos rajono klimato parametrų įtaka tikslingam įvairių energijos taupymo būdų taikymui visuomeninės paskirties pastatuose. Pateikiami energetinio ir techninio-ekonominio skirtingų energijos taupymo priemonių komplekso variantų, charakteringų Rusijos teritorijos klimato zonoms šiuolaikinėmis ekonominėms sąlygoms, įvertinant sąnaudų diskontavimą, skaičiavimo duomenys. Atlikta gautų rezultatų analizė ir pasiūlytos rekomendacijos, kaip pasirinkti optimalų energijos sąnaudų mažinimo derinį eksploatuojant pastatus, priklausomai nuo šildymo periodo dienolaipsnių ir galiojančių medžiagų, įrengimų ir šilumos tiekimo tarifų kainų.

Autonomous power supplies based on solar batteries (SB) and wind generators are increasingly used. The structure of such systems, in addition to the SB itself, includes a re-chargeable battery (AB), a cable network, a load switch and a charge controller that performs, with an excess of the SB power, the functions of maintaining a given charg-ing current or charging voltage AB, and power deficit SB providing a mode of selection of maximal power from SB. In this paper, a mathematical model of such a system and its elements is presented.

Purpose. Development of a method for calculating and selecting a mechanical device for coupling the speeds of the vehicle wheel and the shaft of an asynchronous generator under the condition of its guaranteed excitation. Methodology. The method of selection of transmission rollers of the mechanical device of conjugation of rotational frequencies is offered and the algorithm of its calculation is resulted. A method for determining the minimum allowable speed of the asynchronous generator shaft is proposed and the results of graphical and analytical solution for an asynchronous machine type AOL 21-4 are given. Result. The analytical dependence of the minimum allowable speed of the induction shaft as a function of the parameters of the drive motor of internal combustion, capacitive excitation and load, which must be provided by selecting the gear ratio of the mechanical coupling device. Originality. The general criterion for selecting the size of the transmission rollers is presented in the form of a quality functional, which takes into account the range of variation of the crankshaft speed of the primary engine, the range of variation of the diameter of the transmission roller and the range of fuel consumption at the corresponding crankshaft speed. Practical value. The proposed methods and the obtained research results allow to calculate and design devices for mechanical coupling of rotational frequencies of the shafts of the primary propulsion and asynchronous generator, which will expand the scope of the latter as part of local autonomous power supplies.

Abstract Some of the foundations of Heyes’ radical reasoning seem to be based on a fractional selection of available evidence. Using an ethological perspective, we argue against Heyes’ rapid dismissal of innate cognitive instincts. Heyes’ use of fMRI studies of literacy to claim that culture assembles pieces of mental technology seems an example of incorrect reverse inferences and overlap theories pervasive in cognitive neuroscience.

The first question to be answered, in seeking coordinate systems for geodynamics, is: what is geodynamics? The answer is, of course, that geodynamics is that part of geophysics which is concerned with movements of the Earth, as opposed to geostatics which is the physics of the stationary Earth. But as far as we know, there is no stationary Earth – epur sic monere. So geodynamics is actually coextensive with geophysics, and coordinate systems suitable for the one should be suitable for the other. At the present time, there are not many coordinate systems, if any, that can be identified with a static Earth. Certainly the only coordinate of aeronomic (atmospheric) interest is the height, and this is usually either as geodynamic height or as pressure. In oceanology, the most important coordinate is depth, and this, like heights in the atmosphere, is expressed as metric depth from mean sea level, as geodynamic depth, or as pressure. Only for the earth do we find “static” systems in use, ana even here there is real question as to whether the systems are dynamic or static. So it would seem that our answer to the question, of what kind, of coordinate systems are we seeking, must be that we are looking for the same systems as are used in geophysics, and these systems are dynamic in nature already – that is, their definition involvestime.

SummaryA routine has been developed for the processing of the 5820 plates of the survey. The plates are measured on the automatic measuring machine, GALAXY, and the measures are subsequently processed by computer, to edit and then refer them to the SAO catalogue. A start has been made on measuring the plates, but the final selection of stars to be made is still a matter for discussion.
