Abstract. The stability of man-made underground cavities in soft rocks interacting with overlying structures and infrastructures represents a challenging problem to be faced. Based upon the results of a large number of parametric two-dimensional (2-D) finite-element analyses of ideal cases of underground cavities, accounting for the variability both cave geometrical features and rock mechanical properties, specific charts have been recently proposed in the literature to assess at a preliminary stage the stability of the cavities. The purpose of the present paper is to validate the efficacy of the stability charts through the application to several case studies of underground cavities, considering both quarries collapsed in the past and quarries still stable. The stability graphs proposed by Perrotti et al. (2018) can be useful to evaluate, in a preliminary way, a safety margin for cavities that have not reached failure and to detect indications of predisposition to local or general instability phenomena. Alternatively, for sinkholes that already occurred, the graphs may be useful in identifying the conditions that led to the collapse, highlighting the importance of some structural elements (as pillars and internal walls) on the overall stability of the quarry system.

We demonstrate the application of seismic methods using in-mine infrastructure such as exploration tunnels to image platinum deposits and geologic structures using different acquisition configurations. In 2020, seismic experiments were conducted underground at the Maseve platinum mine in the Bushveld Complex of South Africa. These seismic experiments were part of the Advanced Orebody Knowledge project titled “Developing technologies that will be used to obtain information ahead of the mine face.” In these experiments, we recorded active and passive seismic data using surface nodal arrays and an in-mine seismic land streamer. We focus on analyzing only the in-mine active seismic portion of the survey. The tunnel seismic survey consisted of seven 2D profiles in exploration tunnels, located approximately 550 m below ground surface and a few meters above known platinum deposits. A careful data-processing approach was adopted to enhance high-quality reflections and suppress infrastructure-generated noise. Despite challenges presented by the in-mine noisy environment, we successfully imaged the platinum deposits with the aid of borehole data and geologic models. The results open opportunities to adapt surface-based geophysical instruments to address challenging in-mine environments for mineral exploration.

AbstractThis paper is devoted to the application of the Combined Resistivity Sounding and Profiling electrode configuration (CRSP) to detect underground cavities. Electrical resistivity surveying is among the most favorite geophysical methods due to its nondestructive and economical properties in a wide range of geosciences. Several types of the electrode arrays are applied to detect different certain objectives. In one hand, the electrode array plays an important role in determination of output resolution and depth of investigations in all resistivity surveys. On the other hand, they have their own merits and demerits in terms of depth of investigations, signal strength, and sensitivity to resistivity variations. In this article several synthetic models, simulating different conditions of cavity occurrence, were used to examine the responses of some conventional electrode arrays and also CRSP array. The results showed that CRSP electrode configuration can detect the desired objectives with a higher resolution rather than some other types of arrays. Also a field case study was discussed in which electrical resistivity approach was conducted in Abshenasan expressway (Tehran, Iran) U-turn bridge site for detecting potential cavities and/or filling loose materials. The results led to detect an aqueduct tunnel passing beneath the study area.

One of the most important parameters in performance of every constructing project is the analysis of undersurface condition to assure the land fitness for structure establishment. Flumes and cavities in low depths can be specified fairly by GPR method due to obvious difference in electromagnetic characteristics with their surrounding environment. Geo radar studies have been used to explore undersurface phenomena such as flumes and cavities in Abolfazl Tekieh foundation site in Mahdieh Street, Kerman city. The aim of these studies is undersurface exploration of the depth of 3 to 15 m. The region under study was marked and profiled and all measurements were performed on determined profiles. After processing and expounding of removed sections according to obtained radar grams, some abnormalities were observed that mainly showed some undersurface looseness or small local cavities

The treatment and disposal of sewage sludge in environmentally conscious societies is becoming increasingly problematical due, in large part, to public attitudes. Strategies have to be developed which either successfully defend existing routes or which manage changes that have public support. A case study of managing change at a large wastewater treatment plant, serving Gothenburg, Sweden, is presented. Three radically different alternatives to the current practice, of lime addition to dewatered raw sludge and disposal to land reclamation, were appraised to a common set of criteria and compared with the existing route. The options considered were incineration, drying of dewatered anaerobically digested sludge, and disposal of dewatered anaerobically digested sludge to underground cavities. An account is given of the public discussion meetings that were held at strategically important times, the views expressed at these being taken into account by GRYAAB's management board in their decision to opt for the disposal of sludge to underground cavities.
