Soil clays of 11 horizon samples of Canadian soils gave activity ratios (AReK) of 0.0003 to 0.0040, exchangeable K values of 0.18 to 1.74 meq/100 g, nonexchangeable K values of 1.54 to 6.65 meq/100 g upon leaching with 12 liters of 0.1 N BaCl2 and of 0.45 to 4.03 meq as measured by plant removal, and degrees of K-fixation of 29 to 100% of added K against extraction with 1 N NH4OAc. The amounts of exchangeable K were correlated with the activity ratios and with the amounts of non-exchangeable K removed by plants. Of the fixed K, 46 to 86% was recovered by leaching with the 0.1 N BaCl2 and 18 to 64% by cropping. Some of the clays gave a satisfactory relationship between their K behaviour and mineralogy. Two of them (Ae, Humo-Ferric Podzol), consisting of mixtures of vermiculite and montmorillonite, released native K slowly and had a high capacity to fix added K. Another corresponding sample, from the C horizon and consisting of well-ordered 2 M1 muscovite, also released native K slowly but gave the lowest degree of K-fixation. A predominantly montmorillonite clay with some mica layers (Gray Luvisol) gave a high release of native K and fixed an intermediate amount of added K. The K–mineralogy relationship in the remaining samples was less apparent, and varied with the complexity of interstratification.

AbstractThe escape response and rhythmic swimming in zebrafish are distinct behaviors mediated by two functionally distinct motoneuron (Mn) types. The primary (1°Mn) type depresses, has a large quantal content (Qc), and a high release probability (Pr). Conversely, the secondary (2°Mn) type facilitates and has low and variable Qc and Pr. This functional duality matches well the distinct associated behaviors, with the 1°Mn providing the strong, singular C-bend initiating escape and the 2°Mn confers weaker, rhythmic contractions. Contributing to these functional distinctions is our identification of P/Q type calcium channels mediating transmitter release in 1°Mns and N type channels in 2°Mns. Remarkably, despite these functional and behavioral distinctions, all ~15 individual synapses on each muscle cell are shared by a 1°Mn bouton and at least one 2°Mn bouton. This novel blueprint of synaptic sharing provides an efficient way of controlling two different behaviors at the level of a single postsynaptic cell.

The eclipsing binaries UW CMa, AO Cas, and V729 Cyg have been systems of great interest for over fifty years. The light curves are complex and suffer significant changes on a time scale of months, but the primary attraction of these systems is that both components have O-type spectra; thus they present us with some of the few possibilities for direct measurement of absolute dimensions of very massive stars. Much effort has been expended on these systems, but no really consistent model has emerged.

Here, however, I will report on several surprising gubernatorial elections and the shocking LDP party presidential election. Each of these elections sent a similar message from the voters: ‘it is time for a change’. Powerful political machines using tried and true campaign techniques were repeatedly defeated by novices whose primary attraction was that they were not part of the political establishment.

AbstractSimulated high-bumup nuclear fuel (SIMFUEL) has been leached in synthetic groundwater under oxic conditions. SIMFUEL pellets were ground and sieved to two particle sizes (50–100 and 100–315 μm). An extensive solid characterization of the fragments was carried out by various techniques. Elemental analysis has also been performed prior to the leaching tests.The release of U and the minor components (Mo, Ba and Sr) was monitored during the long term dissolution experiments (350 days). These minor components exhibit a trend similar to uranium, high release at the beginning followed by a plateau. The M/U calculated ratios show different behavior although after a period of time, depending on the particle sizes, constant ratios were observed.SIMHUEL powder was used in order to simulate the physical effect of bum-up on the fuel structure. This fact seems to play an important role on the uranium release. A comparison with the results given in the literature for SIMFUEL pellet leaching tests shows good agreement with the values reported.

AbstractThe biocompatibility of hydroxyapatite (HA), a lab-made bioglass (BGCaMIX) with high crystallization temperature and different HA/BGCaMIX composites, produced by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS), was tested with respect to murine osteocytes both by direct and indirect tests, in order to also investigate possible cytotoxic effects of the samples’ extracts. Previous investigations demonstrated that the samples’ bioactivity, evaluated in a simulated body fluid solution (SBF), increased with the increasing amount of BGCaMIX in the sample itself. Although none of the samples were cytotoxic, the findings of the biological evaluation did not confirm those arising from the SBF assay. In particular, the results of direct tests did not show an enhanced “biological performance” of materials with higher glass content. This finding may be due to the high release of ions and particulate from the glass phase. On the contrary, the performance of the BGCaMIX alone is better for the indirect tests, based on filtered samples’ extracts. This work further demonstrates that, when considering bioglasses and HA/bioglass composites, the results of the SBF assays should be interpreted with great care, making sure that the results arising from direct contact tests are integrated with those arising fromthe indirect ones.
