As online learning has matured, it has increasingly used Web-based technologies to support communication and interactions among participants (e.g. students, instructors, and mentors) in addition to content delivery. Many online learning experiences depend heavily on text-based interactions to support learning, practice, and assessment activities. Threaded discussions forums are particularly useful learning activities, as is the exchange of word-processed documents for formative and summative assessments. These activities are a natural result of the desire to connect people via technology while taking advantage of asynchronous communication’s convenience.

We reported a case of unusual intraocular Loa loa in a 27-year-old patient who presented with painful red eye. Biomicroscopy revealed a living and active adult worm in the anterior chamber of the right eye. After surgical extraction under local anesthesia, parasitological identification confirmed L. loa filariasis.

This exploratory comparative study examined the efficacy of Web-based formative assessments in promoting student performance on in-class summative assessments. Online quizzes were incorporated into one section of a foundational undergraduate social work class (N= 25). Pre- and post-tests were administered to the experimental group (N= 25) and a comparison group (N= 25) which did not have access to the formative assessments. A comparison of pre- and post-test mean differences neared significance (p = .051), with students who took the Web-based quizzes performing only slightly better than those who did not. Instructor evaluations and final course grades were analyzed for triangulation purposes. Implications for the use of instructional technology to broaden pedagogical approaches are discussed.

A positive attitude to a subject may be congruent with higher achievement; however, limited evidence supports this for students in undergraduate chemistry – this may result from difficulties in quantifying attitude. Therefore, in this study, the Attitude to the Study of Chemistry Inventory (ASCI) – a validated instrument to quantify attitude, was used to measure attitude to chemistry in 125 undergraduates studying an introductory course in chemistry, as part of a BSc Chemistry major. The 13 week course contained 4 summative assessments: practical (PRAC), tutorial (TUT), on-line web-based learning (OWL), and a final exam (FE). Sub-scales within ASCI which quantify the ‘affective’ and ‘cognitive’ components of attitude were determined. Firstly, for all 125 students, weak correlations (r) between the affective scale score and FE (r=0.275, P

Traditional palatal and vestibular surgical approaches for removing deeply impacted mesiodens with a crown facing the nasal floor are accompanied by significant complications. Herein, we describe a novel modified intranasal approach to minimize the complications. Also, it can be performed under local anesthesia with proper preoperative workup.

Intra-aortic balloon pump is used frequently to support a failing myocardium in cardiac patients. Due to the invasive nature of this device, usage is accompanied by consistent risk of complications. Balloon rupture, although it occurs rarely, may lead to entrapment if diagnosis delays. A 78-year male who underwent cardiac surgery experienced balloon rupture and entrapment in the right femoral artery during the postoperative follow-up. Surgical extraction under local anesthesia was performed and the patient had an uneventful course. Fast and gentle solution of the problem is necessary to prevent further morbidity or mortality related to a retained balloon catheter in these delicate patients.

Dementia is a major cause of disability among older adults, with 50 million people worldwide living with the disease and 10 million new cases diagnosed each year. Postcard Memories is a web-based, virtual memory-sharing mobile application, designed to support individuals diagnosed with early-stage dementia (ESD), their families, friends and caregivers. The research and design methods employed argue the value and importance of elder‐computer interaction, and greater personalization, supporting and enhancing elder’s engagement in both the virtual and physical mnemonics of memory sharing. The researchers implemented a two-stage study design, including formative and summative assessments of low- and high-fidelity prototypes, pre-, and post-testing questionnaires, patient and carer interviews and ‘think-aloud’ testing methodologies for interaction evaluation. Through quantitative and qualitative assessments this research demonstrates that the Postcard Memories application has potential benefits, including enhanced technical ability and hence self-confidence with new technologies; and enhanced interactions with family members, a promising outcome for those living with ESD.
