Abstract This study compares the efficacy of suspension and bottom culture methods of the West African mangrove oyster, Crassostrea tulipa, on recycled oyster shell cultches in connection with some environmental factors in the Densu Estuary, Ghana, from December 2017 to July 2018. Oyster spat grew up to 5.56 ± 0.10 cm SH for suspension and 4.60 ± 0.14 cm SH for bottom culture on the convex surfaces of oyster shell cultches, whereas oysters cultured on the concave surfaces by suspension and bottom cultured measured 5.59 ± 0.14 cm SH and 4.68 ± 0.14 cm SH, respectively. There was a significant difference (F = 36.26, p = 0.001) between the growth rate of oysters cultured on convex surfaces of cultches by suspension (0.80 ± 0.23 cm/month) and bottom culture (1.02 ± 0.24 cm/month). The growth rate of cultured oysters on concave surfaces of cultches by suspension (1.00 ± 0.24 cm/month) was significantly better (F = 22.32, p < 0.001) than the bottom approach (0.81 ± 0.23 cm/month). Before the extermination of oysters cultured on the bottom in July 2018, there was no significant difference in the survival of oysters cultured by suspension and bottom methods on the convex (χ2 = 0.06, p = 0.99) and concave surfaces (χ2 = 0.19, p = 0.99). Of the physico-chemical factors monitored, oyster growth and survival were significantly influenced by DO (p = 0.004; 0.039) and salinity (p = 0.027; 0.012), respectively. Suspension culture approach should be preferred over the bottom culture, especially for water bodies with low bulk density.

Some physico-Chemical parameters of Manatee habitat along river Benue were conducted. The river was divided into four segments;  Makurdi, Abinsi, Gbajimba and Gbaji. In each srgment, ten (10) sample points were chosen and the following parameters ; Temperature, dissolved solid (D0), pH, Total dissolved solid,(TDS) Electrical conductivity (EC) and Biological oxygen demand (BOD) were measured. Data collected was subjected to statistical analysis.  The result indicated that there were significant differences in the pH, Electrical conductivity, and Biological oxygen demand (BOD) among the four study areas. The mean pH ranged between 6.94 to 7.09, EC ranged between 47.76 µs/cm -55.91 µs/, dissolved oxygen was between 15.82Mg/L in Makurdi to 18.50Mg/L in Abinsi, mean Temperature moved between 29.27oC in Makurdi to 34.33oC in Gbaji, the total dissolved solids ranged from 44.46 Mg/l in Abinsi to 56.74Mg/L in Gbajimba while Biological Oxygen demand (BOD) was least at Gbajimba( 3.03 Mg/L) and  Makurdi with 5.49Mg/L It is therefore suggested that continuous monitoring of the water health of the river be sustained for the survival of the west African manatee.

The essence of standardization of medicinal plants is to produce herbal medicines with acceptable safety, efficacy, quality and reproducibility. Allium cepa var. cepa L. (Amaryllidaceae) bulbs purchased from Sasha Market, Ibadan, Nigeria during the rainy season was subjected to organoleptic, morphological and physico-chemical experiments. The total ash gave 5.40 ± 0.001%, acid-insoluble ash (0.62 ± 0.0001%), water-soluble extractive (2.30 ± 0.004%), alcohol-soluble extractive (1.14 ± 0.005%) and moisture content (91.1 ± 0.009%). Microscopical evaluation of the bulb showed distinct cell-walls devoid of nucleus while the inner epidermis possessed well delineated cell-walls, transparent cytoplasm containing nucleus but without stomata. Histochemical experiments showed lignified, suberized and cellulosic cell-walls, starch grains, oils, resins, tannins and anthraquinones. The study has provided some data for the pharmacopoeial monograph on Allium cepa var. cepa bulb as a possible antidiabetic agent for inclusion into the 2nd editions of the Nigerian Herbal Pharmacopoeial (NHP) and West African Herbal Pharmacopoeial (WAHP).Keywords: Allium cepa var. cepa, Pharmacopoeial, Standardization, Monograph
