A pot experiment was conducted under natural condition with green gram (cultivar CO 6) using twenty bulk soil samples collected from major soil series of Southern agro–climatic zone of Tamil Nadu. Application of graded levels of molybdenum (Mo) at 0, 0.025, 0.050, 0.075 and 0.1 mg kg<sup>−1</sup> positively influenced the yield, nodulation characteristics and nutritional quality of green gram crop. The highest number of nodules, dry weight nodules per plant, nodule N concentration and chlorophyll content of leaves were registered at 0.075 mg kg<sup>−1</sup> level. Similarly, the seed and stover yield, uptake of N, P, K and Mo by green gram were also increased with molybdenum application up to 0.075 mg kg<sup>−1</sup> level beyond which they declined. However, the amount of protein in seed significantly increased with increasing levels of Mo up to 0.1 mg kg<sup>−1</sup> level in different soils. Hence, Mo application not only increased the yield but also enhanced the nutritional quality of green gram through effective nodulation.

A field experiment was conducted on clay textured soil during Kharif season of 2013 to study the effect of soil amendments and organic foliar sprays on crop growth, seed yield and quality of green gram (Vigna radiata L.). The soil application of organic manures and liquid organic foliar sprays at flower initiation and 15 days after flowering (DAF) significantly enhanced the seed yield and seed quality parameters of green gram. Application of FYM (1/3)+ Vermicompost (1/3) + glyricidia leaf manure (1/3) equivalent to 100% RDP and foliar spray of panchagavya (3%) at flower initiation and 15 DAF recorded significantly more number of pods per plant (21.27), pod length (10.25 cm), number of seeds per pod (12.10), seed yield (12.89 g/plant) and seed yield (1263.68 kg/ha) with concomitant higher seed quality parameters like 100 seed weight (5.86 g), seed germination percentage (95.67 %), shoot length(16.53cm) root length (18.25 cm), seedling vigour index (3308) and protein content (23.79 %) as compared to other treatment combinations and control.

Seaweeds are marine macro algae, which form an important component of the marine living resources of the world. To evaluate the efficiency of seaweed (<italic>Kappaphycus</italic> and <italic>Gracilaria</italic>) saps on growth, yield and nutrition of <italic>Vigna radiata</italic>, an experiment was conducted during <italic>spring</italic> 2012 under field conditions. The ten treatments comprised two seaweed saps (K-sap & G-sap), four concentrations of each sap (2.5, 5, 10 and 15%), 7.5% of K-sap + 50% RDF (recommended dose of fertilizers) and control. The highest grain yield of 557 kg ha<sup>−1</sup> was harnessed due to two foliar applications of 10% K-sap + RDF. Increase in yield due to K-sap ranged between 29.32 to 33.81% while due to G-sap it was 25.74 to 26.15%. Foliar application of K-sap influenced the number and dry weight of root nodules at flowering. Application of seaweed saps also enhanced quality of grains in terms of protein, P and K content.

The formation of effective nodules by rhizobial strains is influenced by both the host and the environment (Gibson, 1977). The interaction between host genotype and strains of Rhizobium sp. has already been established for some species (Gasser et al. 1972; Rai & Singh, 1979). The present study presents data for the contribution of different rhizobial strains to nodulation character and quality of green gram.
