Since at least the 1990s, archaeologists and artists have been documenting military installations following the withdrawal of service personnel. They have usually embarked on these recording opportunities separately, experiencing these sites as derelict, lifeless places, with stripped buildings devoid of much of their meaning after their occupants have left. Archaeologists have typically created maps and made photographs. Artists have also taken photographs, but in addition made films and created soundworks. Wherever the medium and the motivation, the assumption is usually made that only those closely familiar with the rhythms and rituals of service life can begin to understand the emptiness of what remains. And being secretive military installations, creating a record during their occupation is never an option. Uniquely, in the months leading to the closure of RAF Coltishall (Norfolk) in 2006, the RAF granted the authors unprecedented access to record the base's drawdown and closure. The project brought artists and archaeologists together to see what could be achieved in unison, while still maintaining some degree of research independence. In undertaking this survey, three related themes emerged: the role of art as heritage practice, new thinking on what constitutes landscape, and the notion of a 'technological sublime'. Following an earlier publication, we now reflect again on those themes. In doing so, we offer this collaboration between art and archaeology (traditionally considered two distinct ways of seeing and recording) as an innovative methodology for documentation, not least after the closure and abandonment of such military and industrial landscapes, where occupational communities had once lived. In this article, the words represent our ideas; the images and films are an example of the result.

This article suggests that journalism educators are potentially doing a disservice to the industry by continuing to echo industry practitioner responses to the question: ‘What is journalism for?’ This article reports on a survey of journalism academics and practising journalists in Australia, which found that they predominately share views about the role of journalism. With massive shifts occurring in the way journalism is funded and produced, it is clear that journalism requires new thinking from scholars who have the time and resources to reflect beyond current normative frames and professional values. The authors suggest that in the interests of the journalism industry’s future, the Australian academy should differentiate itself from the industry’s immediate needs and be more forward thinking in its work.

The exploitation of knowledge and experience is increasingly important to companies operating in the globalized economy, faced with intense competition and striving to make headway in difficult markets. If such exploitation is important for existing companies, able to develop their own knowledge from previous experience, it is critical for new ventures that have no direct real-world experience on which to draw. Would-be entrepreneurs now operate in a very different business environment from that of their predecessors and they need new forms of entrepreneurship education and new methods of pre-launch trial and analysis for start-ups. The transition from ‘nature’ to ‘nurture’ in the approach to and perception of entrepreneurship, coupled with the increasingly engaged economic role of higher education institutions and research centres can be manipulated effectively to improve the prospects for success of high-expectation entrepreneurs. This article demonstrates how Curley and Formica's model of the experimental laboratory for would-be entrepreneurs responds to the new business environment and the new thinking.

Este trabalho visa discutir o lugar e/ou papel da cartografia no ensino da geografia. Para isso, traz resultados teóricos e práticos do projeto de pesquisa e extensão intitulado “Popularização da cartografia e suas novas tecnologias na escola pública”, realizado no Colégio Estadual Dona Mora Guimarães (Cajazeiras X, Salvador BA). Considera-se que a cartografia escolar, apesar dos avanços epistemológicos, vem passando por diversas dificuldades em sua implementação. Para analisar os entraves, potencialidades e exemplos de práxis pedagógicas, realizaram-se oficinas com foco nos conceitos da alfabetização cartográfica – visão vertical/horizontal, lateralidade, decodificação dos símbolos, proporcionalidade, representação bidimensional X tridimensional e uso de novas tecnologias. Defende-se que a alfabetização cartográfica pode ser utilizada como uma metodologia inovadora para a geografia escolar. Em paralelo, são discutidas as dificuldades encontradas em âmbito universitário e escolar. Por fim, dividem-se experiências exitosas, com mais de 400 alunos envolvidos diretamente, que utilizaram recursos técnico metodológicos a partir do espaço vivenciado e da abordagem construtivista, a saber: mapeamento do corpo humano, da sala de aula e construção de maquetes. Conclui-se que o tema possui muitos desafios, mas carece principalmente da ampliação deste debate para ultrapassar as barreiras dissociativas, colocando a cartografia como meio de comunicação da ciência geográfica. Abstract THE ROLE OF CARTOGRAPHY IN THE TEACHING OF GEOGRAPHY: PERSPECTIVES FROM AN EXTENSION PROJECT This paper aims to discuss the role of cartography in the teaching of geography. In order to do so it brings theoretical and practical results of the research project and extension called “Popularization of cartography and its new technologies in public school,” held in the State School Dona Mora Guimarães (Cazajeiras X, Salvador- BA). It is considered that the teaching of cartography, despite the epistemological advances, has experienced several difficulties in its implementation. To analyze the barriers, potentialities, and examples of pedagogical practice, workshops were held focusing on the concepts of cartographic literacy - vision vertical/horizontal, laterality, decoding of symbols, proportionality, two-dimensional X three-dimensional representation and use of new technologies. It is advocated that cartographic literacy can be used as an innovative methodology for the teaching of geography in schools. In parallel, the difficulties found in a university and school context are discussed. Finally, successful experiences are shared with more than 400 students involved directly, who used technical and methodological resources, from where they live and constructivist approach, namely: mapping of the human body, of the classroom and building of models. It is concluded that the theme has many challenges, but lacks mainly the expansion of this debate to overcome the dissociative barriers, putting the cartography as means of communication of the geographical science.

Extracting and consolidating knowledge from past projects can help managers in selecting projects with the correct level of riskiness, while market analysis gives directions for reaching the objective of a balanced project portfolio. To this extent, the chapter discusses strategic importance of project selection and the role of risks and uncertainties in project portfolio management and presents some fundamental and innovative frameworks and project selection methodologies for balancing risks. Finally, the chapter proposes a model containing an innovative methodology, based on artificial neural networks, to help managers in balancing project portfolio and assessing projects during the selection phase on the basis of risks, uncertainties and critical success factors.

This chapter investigates the archaeological landscapes of the frontiers of the Sasanian Empire. Drawing on evidence from current and archived archaeological surveys, in combination with high-resolution remote sensing datasets such as CORONA spy photography, we compare the organisation of settlements and defensive structures of the Sasanian frontier zones in response to a variety of external pressures. These varied from the Roman Empire in the west to less centralised entities, including nomadic groups, in the south-west and north-east. Following a general discussion of the multiple manifestations of Sasanian frontiers drawn from southern Mesopotamia (Iraq), northern Syria and north-eastern Iran, the main focus of the chapter is on the complex frontier landscape of the southern Caucasus, particularly the area of modern Azerbaijan, Georgia and Daghestan. We discuss the role of linear barriers, including the Gorgan Wall in north-eastern Iran and the Ghilghilchay and Derbent Walls in the Caucasus, irrigation systems, and alignments of fortifications and settlements in shaping their local landscapes. By placing the archaeological remains of the Sasanian Empire in a wider context we are able to examine the relationships between military installations, settlement patterns, infrastructure and geographical features such as mountain ranges and rivers. Comparing the different case studies allows us to conclude with some general statements on the nature of Sasanian power in the frontier territories of the empire.

This paper will provide an overview of the philosophical premises, the generation of research questions, data collection and analysis process, potential ethical issues, and quality of inference of living theory action research methodology. Based on the ontological value that everyone has knowledge within themselves, living theory action research considers knowledge to be the creation from evaluation and reflection as part of actions to improve educational practices. This paper suggests a way to move ahead with living theory action research by shedding light on the significance of multimedia use and the role of educational influence in its methodology to communicate the meanings of expression of embodied values and for the validation process. This paper aims to help emerging educational action researchers understand living theory action research as an innovative methodology to address the gap between values and practical implementation for action researchers.

This paper addresses the manner in which the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) transferred its technology to Australian industry during the period 1949 to 1979. The analysis is framed within the changing economic and political scene in Australia and the changing expectations for public research organisations such as CSIRO. During the 1950s and 1960s CSIRO gave little direct attention to the processes of technology transfer but instead, following the prevailing wisdom, focused on high quality science and relied on existing extension services and patenting to capture the benefits from its research. This ‘science-push’ approach proved successful for Australia’s rural industries but, with a few exceptions, less so for the country’s secondary industries. By the early 1970s CSIRO faced pressures for change, induced by a tougher economic climate and changing views on the role of public research institutions. A shift toward greater customer relevance in its research would also need to be matched by new thinking about technology transfer.

Throughout much of the last five decades the process of introducing, integrating, and exploiting information technology in work organizations has posed formidable challenges regularly resulting in reports of significant underperformance and failure. On closer inquiry it emerges that such underperformance and failure are firmly rooted in an inability to foster a highly integrated approach to the management of IT-enabled business change. This paper critiques in detail both the enduring and deep-rooted nature of this dilemma paying particular attention to the role of diverse occupational communities in its perpetuation through time. Furthermore, it explicates the polarized patterns of cognition and action embedded in these communities paying particular attention to the executive, information technology, and organization development communities. Finally, it presents a robust critique of the manner in which academic formation within these occupational communities firmly reinforces such polarized patterns of behaviour thereby sustaining the enduring dilemma with IT-enabled business change.
