Effect of Acceleration on the Heat Transfer Coefficient on a Film-Cooled Surface

Results are presented of an experimental investigation into the influence of mainstream acceleration on the heat transfer coefficient downstream of injection through a row of 35 deg holes in a flat plate. A mass transfer analogue technique was used, with two uniform acceleration parameters, K ( = v(du∞/dx)/u2∞, of 1.9 × 10−6 and 5.0×10−6 in addition to the zero acceleration baseline case. Two injectants, air and carbon dioxide, were employed to give coolant-to-mainstream density ratios of 1.0 and 1.52, respectively. The blowing rate varied from 0.5 to 2.0. The heat transfer coefficient beneath the film decreased progressively as the acceleration increased, with maximum reductions from the zero acceleration datum case of about 27 percent. In the presence of acceleration, the heat transfer coefficient at a given blowing rate was dependent on the density ratio, an increase in the density ratio leading to a decrease in the heat transfer coefficient. An empirical correlation of the data over most of the range of densities and blowing rates of the experiments has been developed.

The effect of density ratio of cooling films on the heat transfer coefficient on a flat plate is investigated using a heat-mass transfer analogy. The experimental technique employed uses a swollen polymer surface and laser holographic interferometry. A density ratio of 1.0 was achieved using air as the injectant. Density ratios of 1.38 and 1.52, representative of turbine operating conditions, were obtained by using foreign gases. The coolant fluids were injected at various blowing rates through a single normal hole or through a row of holes spaced at three-diameter intervals, and inclined at 35° or 90° to the mainstream direction. The experiments were conducted under isothermal conditions in a subsonic, zero mainstream pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer. The results indicated large differences in behaviour between the two injection angles. For normal injection, the heat transfer coefficient at a fixed blowing parameter was insensitive to the variation of density ratio, whereas for 35° injection strong dependence was observed. Scaling parameters for the heat transfer data have been proposed so that use can be made of data obtained at density ratios not representative of gas turbine practice. In addition, a correlation for normal injection data has been formulated.

An experimental investigation has been performed to study the effect of hole shape and position on the cooling performance of a gas turbine stator. Two rows of laid-back fan-shaped holes are placed on the pressure side of a scaled vane in a two-dimensional cascade and compared with two identical rows of standard cylindrical exit. Both hole shapes have the same base diameter and were investigated at three different blowing ratios (1, 1.35, and 1.7) with the same coolant flow rate used in each case. The experiments are conducted for the first row of holes only, then for the second row only, and finally for both two rows together at a 0.9 density ratio. The mainstream inlet Reynolds number based on the true chord is 1.4E5 and the exit Mach number is 0.23. The local distributions of the heat transfer coefficient and film cooling effectiveness are obtained using a transient TLC technique. The second row of holes, with by a higher local radius of curvature, shows a 40% decrease in the cooling effectiveness as well as a 10% increase in the heat transfer coefficient near downstream of the hole compared with that obtained by the first hole. The double injection provides a slight increase in the cooling effectiveness and a lower heat transfer coefficient due to the favorable interaction between both injections.

Knowing the heat transfer coefficient augmentation is imperative to predicting film cooling performance on turbine components. In the past, heat transfer coefficient augmentation was generally measured at unit density ratio to keep measurements simple and uncertainty low. Some researchers have measured heat transfer coefficient augmentation while taking density ratio effects into account, but none have made direct temperature measurements of the wall and adiabatic wall to calculate hf/h0 at higher density ratios. This work presents results from measuring the heat transfer coefficient augmentation downstream of shaped holes with a 7° forward and lateral expansion at DR = 1.0, 1.2, and 1.5 on a flat plate using a constant heat flux surface. The results showed that the heat transfer coefficient augmentation was low while the jets were attached to the surface and increased when the jets started to separate. At DR = 1.0, hf/h0 was higher for a given blowing ratio than at DR = 1.2 and DR = 1.5. However, when velocity ratios are matched, better correspondence was found at the different density ratios. Surface contours of hf/h0 showed that the heat transfer was initially increased along the centerline of the jet, but was reduced along the centerline at distances farther downstream. The decrease along the centerline may be due to counter-rotating vortices sweeping warm air next to the heat flux plate toward the center of the jet, where they sweep upward and thicken the thermal boundary layer. This warming of the core of the coolant jet over the heated surface was confirmed with thermal field measurements.

The paper reviews the present understanding of the analysis of the heat and mass transfer processes in single-slope solar stills. By using the results of published experiments, it is proposed that the heat and mass transfer phenomena from the basin water to the glass cover are coupled. This coupling makes it possible to derive the dependence of the heat transfer coefficient for condensation on the inclination of the glass cover of the still. The derived relation, i.e., Nucon = 0.738 (Grcon*Prcon*sin β/Ja*)¼ A−1 where A is the aspect ratio, has been demonstrated to be an important expression for predicting the heat transfer coefficient for condensation hcon necessary for a more realistic evaluation of the overall efficiency of single-slope solar still of a given cover angle β.

In this study, the boiling heat transfer coefficients of carbon dioxide with a PAG-type lubricating oil entrained from 0 to 5 wt% in a horizontally placed smooth tube with an inner diameter of 2 mm were experimentally investigated under the following operating conditions: mass fluxes from 170 to 320 kg/m2s, heat fluxes from 4.5 to 36 kW/m2, and a saturation temperature of 15 °C. The results show that for a low oil concentration of approximately 0.5% to 1%, no further deterioration of the heat transfer coefficient was observed at higher oil concentrations in spite of a significant decrement of the heat transfer coefficient compared to that under an oil-free condition. The heat flux still had a positive influence on the heat transfer coefficient in low quality regions. However, no obvious influence was observed in high quality regions, which implies that nucleate boiling dominates in the low quality region whereas it is suppressed in the high quality regions. Unlike the mass flux under an oil-free condition, mass flux has a significant influence on the heat transfer coefficient, with a maximum increase of 50% in the heat transfer. On the basis of our experimental measurements of the flow boiling heat transfer of carbon dioxide under wide experimental conditions, a flow boiling heat transfer model for horizontal tubes has been proposed for a mixture of CO2 and polyalkylene glycol (PAG oil) in the pre-dryout region, with consideration of the thermodynamic properties of the mixture. The surface tension and viscosity of the mixture were particularly taken into account. New factors were introduced into the correlation to reflect the suppressive effects of the mass flux and the oil on both the nucleate boiling. It is shown that the calculated results can depict the influence of the mass flux and the heat flux on both nucleate boiling and convection boiling.

This paper describes a detailed experimental investigation of narrow jet impingement channel with surface features. Three novel surface features: aerofoil shaped dimple cavities on the target plate, chevron elements extending between the jet issuing plate and the target plate and 45 degree wedges mounted on the jet-issuing plate, are proposed. The narrow rectangular channel is 254 mm × 57.2 mm × 19.1 mm (10” × 2.25” × 0.75”) in dimensions and consists of five jets with a constant diameter, D of 9.525 mm (0.375”). The inter-jet spacing and jet-to-target plate distance is 4D and 2D, respectively. Three test cases with different novel surface features are proposed, and the effect of these surface features on the distribution of heat transfer coefficient on the target plate is characterized using the transient liquid crystal technique. In the first test case, dimpulated surface features are introduced on the target plate. The second case consists of chevron elements which extend between the jet issuing plate and the target plate, while the third case has 45 degree wedges mounted on the jet-issuing plate. The smooth jet impingement channel is used as a baseline case for comparison of the heat transfer coefficient distribution on the target plate. The Reynolds number is defined based on the jet diameter, D and bulk velocity of the jet. The experiments were performed at Reynolds number ranging between 61,000 to 98,000. In order to gain a better insight of the flow field within the channel for each of these features, a steady state numerical simulation was performed for each case using the commercially available software, ANSYS CFX. The boundary conditions for these simulations were set as close to the experimental conditions as possible. For turbulence closure, the Shear Stress Transport (SST) model was used which has been shown to be reasonably accurate with moderate computational costs. The numerical results are in favorable trend compared to the values obtained through experimentation. However, in certain regions, the SST turbulence model has overpredicted the heat transfer coefficient values. The results show that the first test case with dimpulated surface features exhibits the highest heat transfer enhancement among all the tested configurations. This enhancement is approximately 25 percent higher than that of the baseline case. The presence of the chevron elements has minimized the deflection of the jets due to crossflow, but, inhibited the spreading of the impinging jets on the target plate. This, in turn, has reduced the local heat transfer performance quite substantially. In case of the 45 degree wedges, the heat transfer enhancement was augmented at the downstream, which was ultimately caused by the diversion of the crossflow towards the target plate.

Liquid crystals are used in this experimental investigation to measure the heat transfer coefficient in a spanwise rotating channel with two opposite rib-roughened walls. The ribs (also called turbulence promoters or turbulators) are configured in a staggered arrangement with an angle of attack to the mainstream flow, α, of 90° for all cases. Results are presented for three values of turbulator blockage ratio, e/Dh (0.1333, 0.25, 0.333) and for a range of Reynolds numbers from 15,000 to 50,000 while the test section is rotated at different speeds to give Rotational Reynolds numbers between 450 and 1800. The Rossby number range is 10 to 100 (Rotation number of 0.1 to 0.01). The effect of turbulator blockage ratios on heat transfer enhancement is also investigated. Comparisons are made between the results of geometrically identical stationary and rotating passages of otherwise similar operating conditions. The results indicate that a significant enhancement in heat transfer is achieved in both the stationary and rotating cases, when the surfaces are roughened with turbulators. For the rotating case, a maximum increase over that of the stationary case of about 45% in the heat transfer coefficient is seen for a blockage ratio of 0.133 on the trailing surface in the direction of rotation and the minimum is a decrease of about 6% for a blockage ratio of 0.333 on the leading surface, for the range of rotation numbers tested. The technique of using liquid crystals to determine heat transfer coefficients in this investigation proved to be an effective and accurate method especially for nonstationary test sections.
