High-temperature corrosion from low melting ash deposits, low-temperature corrosion, and low-temperature deposits produced by condensed sulfuric acid are three potential problems associated with residual fuel oil firing in steam generators. This paper discusses test work carried out on a large unit type steam generator in an effort to alleviate these problems through low-excess air operation and the use of a magnesium additive. Results indicate that these two steps are of significant help.

Studies were carried out in a residual fuel fired package boiler to assess the effect of various combustion modification procedures on the amount and size distribution of particulate emissions. It was found that application of moderate levels of either two stage combustion or flue gas recirculation did not have much effect on particulate loading. Severe staging as well as use of interstage heat transfer to cool the gases between stages produced significantly more particulate. Likewise, higher levels of flue gas recirculation produced substantially more particulate. In both techniques the change in size distribution was mainly in the >10- and 1–10-μm ranges. Emulsified oil containing up to 30 percent water reduced particulate loading primarily in the coarse size ranges. Satisfactory combustion could be obtained using a preheat temperature and excess air level below that required for the straight residual fuel oil.

Abstract The performance of Fe-Si coatings and an iron aluminide (FeAl) intermetallic alloy (FeAl40at%+0.1at%B+10vol%Al2O3) in molten salts containing vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) and sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) is reported. Corrosion and fouling by ash deposits containing V2O5 and Na2SO4 are typical corrosion problems in fuel oil-fired electric power units. High-temperature corrosion tests were performed using both electrochemical polarization and immersion techniques. The temperature interval of this study was 600°C to 900°C, and the molten salts were 80wt%V2O5-20wt%Na2SO4. Curves of corrosion current density vs temperature obtained by the potentiodynamic studies are reported, as well as the weight loss vs temperature curves from molten salt immersion tests. Both Fe-Si coatings and FeAl40at%+0.1at%B+10vol%Al2O3 showed good behavior against molten salt corrosion. The final results show the potential of these coatings and alloys to solve the high-temperature corrosion in fuel oil-fired electric power units.

For a stable position of the flame front in the combustion chambers of gas turbine power plants, the fresh gas-air mixture must be heated to the ignition temperature during the entire operation process. With air excess coefficients in the interval between the upper and lower concentration limits, reverse currents from the zone of developed combustion successfully cope with this task. When organizing low-temperature combustion near the lean limit, the contribution of reverse currents to heating the fresh gas-air mixture turns out to be insufficient and additional external heating of the components in special heaters with exhaust gases from the turbine is required. The temperature characteristics of the fresh gas-air mixture at the inlet to the chamber and in the zone of return currents, as well as combustion products in the developed flame zone, were obtained from the solution of the energy balance equations. The modes of low-temperature lean combustion with excess air coefficients exceeding the lower concentration limit α = 2 are considered. The calculations were carried out for two values of the ejection coefficient in the zone of reverse currents K = 0.14 and K = 0.30. A K value of 0.14 was obtained using empirical relationships. The value K = 0.30 was obtained from the condition that during stoichiometric combustion, the gas-air mixture is heated completely by reverse currents. It is shown that with an increase in the excess air ratio to ensure a stable position of the flame front, the role of external heating of components increases.

Bentonites are aluminosilicate minerals which, due to their porosity, layered structure and composition have a wide application. Structural and textural characteristics of bentonite may be improved by different modification procedures. The aim of this study was to investigate compositional, structural and textural characteristics of domestic bentonite in place Gerzovo, before and after the activation with sulfuric acid. These characteristics were investigated by analytical methods, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the method of low-temperature nitrogen adsorption (BET). Characteristics of acid-activated bentonite were compared with the characteristics of commercial active clay. The obtained results showed that the activation of bentonite with sulfuric acid leads to a significant improvement in structural and textural characteristics. Using these results it can be assumed that this bentonite will have good adsorption characteristics and can serve as an alternative in comparison with imported commercial aluminosilicate-based adsorbents.
