An Experimental Study of a Turbulent Wall Jet on Smooth and Transitionally Rough Surfaces

The effect of surface roughness on the mean velocity and skin friction characteristics of a plane turbulent wall jet was experimentally investigated using laser Doppler anemometry. The Reynolds number based on the slot height and exit velocity of the jet was approximately Re = 7500. A 36-grit sheet was used to create a transitionally rough flow (44 < ks+ < 70). Measurements were carried out at downstream distances from the jet exit ranging from 20 to 80 slot heights. Both conventional and momentum-viscosity scaling were used to analyze the streamwise evolution of the flow on smooth and rough walls. Three different methods were employed to estimate the friction velocity in the fully developed region of the wall jet, which was then used to calculate the skin friction coefficient. This paper provides new experimental data for the case of a plane wall jet on a transitionally rough surface and uses it to quantify the effects of roughness on the momentum field. The present results indicate that the skin friction coefficient for the rough-wall case compared to a smooth wall increases by as much as 140%. Overall, the study suggests that for the transitionally rough regime considered in the present study, roughness effects are significant but mostly confined to the inner region of the wall jet.

The goal of this research is to study the effect of favorable pressure gradient (FPG) on the near wall structures of a turbulent boundary layer on a smooth wall. 2D-PIV measurements have been performed in a sink flow, initially at a coarse resolution, to characterize the development of the mean flow and (under resolved) Reynolds stresses. Lack of self-similarity of mean velocity profiles shows that the boundary layer does not attain the sink flow equilibrium. In the initial phase of acceleration, the acceleration parameter, K = v/U2dU/dx, increases from zero to 0.575×10−6, skin friction coefficient decreases and mean velocity profiles show a log region, but lack universality. Further downstream, K remains constant, skin friction coefficient increases and the mean velocity profiles show a second log region away from the wall. In the initial part of the FPG region, all the Reynolds stress components decrease over the entire boundary layer. In the latter phase, they continue to decrease in the middle of the boundary layer, and increase significantly close to the wall (below y∼0.15δ), where they collapse when normalized with the local freestream velocity. Turbulence production and wallnormal transport, scaled with outer units, show self-similar profiles close to the wall in the constant K region. Spanwise-streamwise plane data shows evidence of low speed streaks in the log layer, with widths scaling with the boundary layer thickness.

Experimental measurements of profiles of mean velocity and distributions of boundary-layer thickness and skin friction coefficient from aerodynamically smooth, transitionally rough, and fully rough turbulent boundary-layer flows are presented for four surfaces—three rough and one smooth. The rough surfaces are composed of 1.27 mm diameter hemispheres spaced in staggered arrays 2, 4, and 10 base diameters apart, respectively, on otherwise smooth walls. The current incompressible turbulent boundary-layer rough-wall air flow data are compared with previously published results on another, similar rough surface. It is shown that fully rough mean velocity profiles collapse together when scaled as a function of momentum thickness, as was reported previously. However, this similarity cannot be used to distinguish roughness flow regimes, since a similar degree of collapse is observed in the transitionally rough data. Observation of the new data shows that scaling on the momentum thickness alone is not sufficient to produce similar velocity profiles for flows over surfaces of different roughness character. The skin friction coefficient data versus the ratio of the momentum thickness to roughness height collapse within the data uncertainty, irrespective of roughness flow regime, with the data for each rough surface collapsing to a different curve. Calculations made using the previously published discrete element prediction method are compared with data from the rough surfaces with well-defined roughness elements, and it is shown that the calculations are in good agreement with the data.

The performance of wall-modeled large-eddy simulation (WMLES) based on hybrid models, in which the inner region is modeled by Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equation and the outer region is resolved by large-eddy simulation (LES), can make the application of LES attainable at high Reynolds numbers. In previous work by various authors, it was found that in most cases a buffer region exists between the RANS and LES zones, in which the velocity gradient is too high; this leads to an inaccurate prediction of the skin-friction coefficient. Artificially perturbing the RANS∕LES interface has been demonstrated to be effective in removing the buffer region. In this work, WMLES has been performed with stochastic forcing at the interface, following the previous work by our group on two nonequilibrium complex flows. From the two flows studied, we conclude that the application of stochastic forcing results in improvements in the prediction of the skin-friction coefficient in the equilibrium regions of these flows, a better agreement with the experiments of the Reynolds stresses in the adverse pressure gradient and the recovery region, and a good agreement of the mean velocity field with experiments in the separation region. Some limitations of this method, especially in terms of CPU requirements, will be discussed.

SummaryResults of an experimental investigation of the distribution of skin friction along the wall of a plane turbulent wall jet are presented. The measurements show that it is possible to describe the variation of skin friction coefficient by a formula similar to the Blasius formula which is based on experimental results of turbulent pipe flow. This is simply achieved by considering the inner layer of fluid between the wall and the position where the velocity is a maximum as a boundary layer with an outer uniform free stream of velocity equal to the local maximum velocity.Other measurements of velocity distribution indicate that within the experimental range and accuracy, the velocity profiles in the jet are similar and that the rate of change of velocity and width of the jet can be expressed by simple power laws. These results are then partially compared with theory.

The dynamic properties of nanofluids have made them an area of intense research during the past few decades. In this article, flow of nonaligned stagnation point nanofluid is investigated. Copper–water based nanofluid in the presence of temperature-dependent viscosity is taken into account. The governing nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equations transformed by partial differential equations are solved numerically by using fourth-order Runge–Kutta–Fehlberg integration technique. Effects of variable viscosity parameter on velocity and temperature profiles of pure fluid and copper–water nanofluid are analyzed, discussed, and presented graphically. Streamlines, skin friction coefficients, and local heat flux of nanofluid under the impact of variable viscosity parameter, stretching ratio, and solid volume fraction of nanoparticles are also displayed and discussed. It is observed that an increase in solid volume fraction of nanoparticles enhances the magnitude of normal skin friction coefficient, tangential skin friction coefficient, and local heat flux. Viscosity parameter is found to have decreasing effect on normal and tangential skin friction coefficients whereas it has a positive influence on local heat flux.

This paper reports the results of an extensive experimental investigation into the mean flow properties of turbulent boundary layers with momentum-thickness Reynolds numbers less than 3000. Zero pressure gradient and favorable pressure gradients were studied. The velocity profiles displayed a logarithmic region even at very low Reynolds numbers (as low as Rθ = 261). The results were independent of the leading-edge shape, and the pin-type turbulent stimulators performed well. It was found that the shape and Clauser parameters were a little higher than the correlation proposed by Coles [10], and the skin friction coefficient was a little lower. The skin friction coefficient behavior could be fitted well by a simple power-law relationship in both zero and favorable pressure gradients.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to focus on the numerical modelling of transient natural convection flow of an incompressible viscous nanofluid past an impulsively started semi-infinite vertical plate with variable surface temperature. Design/methodology/approach – The problem is governed by the coupled non-linear partial differential equations with appropriate boundary conditions. A robust, well-tested, Crank-Nicolson type of implicit finite-difference method, which is unconditionally stable and convergent, is used to solve the governing non-linear set of partial differential equations. Findings – The local and average values of the skin-friction coefficient (viscous drag) and the average Nusselt number (the rate of heat transfer) decreased, while the local Nusselt number increased for all nanofluids, namely, aluminium oxide-water, copper-water, titanium oxide-water and silver-water with an increase in the temperature exponent m. Selecting aluminium oxide as the dispersing nanoparticles leads to the maximum average Nusselt number (the rate of heat transfer), while choosing silver as the dispersing nanoparticles leads to the minimum local Nusselt number compared to the other nanofluids for all values of the temperature exponent m. Also, choosing silver as the dispersing nanoparticles leads to the minimum skin-friction coefficient (viscous drag), while selecting aluminium oxide as the dispersing nanoparticles leads to the maximum skin-friction coefficient (viscous drag) for all values of the temperature exponent m. Research limitations/implications – The Brinkman model for dynamic viscosity and Maxwell-Garnett model for thermal conductivity are employed. The governing boundary layer equations are written according to The Tiwari-Das nanofluid model. A range of nanofluids containing nanoparticles of aluminium oxide, copper, titanium oxide and silver with nanoparticle volume fraction range less than or equal to 0.04 are considered. Practical implications – The present simulations are relevant to nanomaterials thermal flow processing in the chemical engineering and metallurgy industries. This study also provides an important benchmark for further simulations of nanofluid dynamic transport phenomena of relevance to materials processing, with alternative computational algorithms (e.g. finite element methods). Originality/value – This paper is relatively original and illustrates the influence of variable surface temperature on transient natural convection flow of a viscous incompressible nanofluid and heat transfer from an impulsively started semi-infinite vertical plate.
