Automatic tree identification and position using high-resolution remote sensing images are critical for ecological garden planning, management, and large-scale environmental quality detection. However, existing single-tree detection methods have a high rate of misdetection in forests not only due to the similarity of background and crown colors but also because light and shadow caused abnormal crown shapes, resulting in a high rate of misdetections and missed detection. This article uses urban plantations as the primary research sample. In conjunction with the most recent deep learning method for object detection, a single-tree detection method based on the lite fourth edition of you only look once (YOLOv4-Lite) was proposed. YOLOv4’s object detection framework has been simplified, and the MobileNetv3 convolutional neural network is used as the primary feature extractor to reduce the number of parameters. Data enhancement is performed for categories with fewer single-tree samples, and the loss function is optimized using focal loss. The YOLOv4-Lite method is used to detect single trees on campus, in an orchard, and an economic plantation. Not only is the YOLOv4-Lite method compared to traditional methods such as the local maximum value method and the watershed method, where it outperforms them by nearly 46.1%, but also to novel methods such as the Chan-Vese model and the template matching method, where it outperforms them by nearly 26.4%. The experimental results for single-tree detection demonstrate that the YOLOv4-Lite method improves accuracy and robustness by nearly 36.2%. Our work establishes a reference for the application of YOLOv4-Lite in additional agricultural and plantation products.

Spectra of coherent edge radiation (CER) were observed at the S-band linac facility of Kyoto University Free Electron Laser. A local maximum was observed in the CER spectrum on-crest operation of the radio frequency (RF) field. As the phase of the RF field was shifted from the crest, the frequency of the maximum decreased, and the CER spectrum approached a spectrum of Gaussian-distributed electrons in a bunch. It was found that this strange spectrum can be explained by a model in which a satellite pulse exists around a main pulse in the electron bunch. Furthermore, it demonstrated that CER is an effective tool for monitoring the shape of the electron bunch.

Snow cover is known to be an efficient and unique natural archive of atmospheric input and an indicator of ecosystem status. In high latitude regions, thawing of snow provides a sizable contribution of dissolved trace metals to the hydrological network. Towards a better understanding of natural and anthropogenic control on heavy metals and metalloid input from the atmosphere to the inland waters of Siberian arctic and subarctic regions, we measured chemical composition of dissolved (<0.22 µm) fractions of snow across a 2800 km south–north gradient in Western Siberia. Iron, Mn, Co, Ni, and Cd demonstrated sizable (by a factor of 4–7) decrease in concentration northward, which can be explained by a decrease in overall population density and the influence of dry aerosol deposition. Many elements (Mn, Ni, Cu, Cd, Pb, As, and Sb) exhibited a prominent local maximum (a factor of 2–3) in the zone of intensive oil and gas extraction (61–62° N latitudinal belt), which can be linked to gas flaring and fly ash deposition. Overall, the snow water chemical composition reflected both local and global (long-range) atmospheric transfer processes. Based on mass balance calculation, we demonstrate that the winter time atmospheric input represents sizable contribution to the riverine export fluxes of dissolved (<0.45 µm) Mn, Co, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Sb during springtime and can appreciably shape the hydrochemical composition of the Ob River main stem and tributaries.

We experimentally investigate the low-frequency (below 1 THz) spectral content of broadband terahertz (THz) emission from two-color femtosecond filament formed by the 2.7-mJ, 40-fs, 800+400-nm pulse focused into air. For incoherent detection, we screened the Golay cell by the bandpass filters and measured the THz angular distributions at the selected frequencies ν=0.5, 1, 2 and 3 THz. The measured distributions of THz fluence were integrated over the forward hemisphere taking into account the transmittance of the filters, thus providing the estimation of spectral power at the frequencies studied. The spectral power decreases monotonically with the frequency increasing from 0.5 to 3 THz, thus showing that the maximum of THz spectrum is attained at ν≤0.5 THz. The THz waveform measured by electro-optical sampling (EOS) based on ZnTe crystal and transformed into the spectral domain shows that there exists the local maximum of the THz spectral power at ν≈1 THz. This disagrees with monotonic decrease of THz spectral power obtained from the filter-based measurements. We have introduced the correction to the spectral power reconstructed from EOS measurements. This correction takes into account different focal spot size for different THz frequencies contained in the broadband electromagnetic pulse. The corrected EOS spectral power is in semi-quantitative agreement with the one measured by a set of filters.

Abstract This paper investigates the effect of stress and strains concentration, due to the notch presence, on the elasto-plastic behavior of gold microstructures subjected to tensile loading under electrostatic actuation. A kinematic model for the test microstructure which relates the experimentally measured deflection to the induced stress in the central specimen with applied electrostatic load is developed. The local maximum stress and strains at the notch root are analytically estimated using the Neuber’s rule and verified through a detailed non-linear coupled-field electric-structural finite element method (FEM)-based analysis. Several experimental tests are carried out to analyze the accumulation of plastic strain and the consequent development of plastic hinges induced in the central notched specimen due to repeated cyclic tensile loading by measuring the corresponding deflection with each loading cycle. The comparison between the failure condition observed experimentally in the test notched specimens and the FEM-based simulation results shows that the notch acts as stress and strains raiser fostering the initiation and expansion of plastic hinges in the thin film gold specimen which can lead to the specimen breakdown.

Abstract Two-dimensional mesoscale finite element analysis (FEA) of a multi-layered brain tissue was performed to calculate the damage related average stress triaxiality and local maximum von Mises strain in the brain. The FEA was integrated with rate dependent hyperelastic and internal state variable (ISV) models respectively describing the behaviors of wet and dry brain tissues. Using the finite element results, a statistical method of design of experiments (DOE) was utilized to independently screen the relative influences of seven parameters related to brain morphology (sulcal width/depth, gray matter (GM) thickness, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) thickness and brain lobe) and loading/environment conditions (strain rate and humidity) with respect to the potential damage growth/coalescence in the brain tissue. The results of the parametric study illustrated that the GM thickness and humidity were the two most crucial parameters affecting average stress triaxiality. For the local maximum von Mises strain at the depth of brain sulci, the brain lobe/region was the most influential factor. The conclusion of this investigation gives insight for the future development and refinement of a macroscale brain damage model incorporating information from lower length scale

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to propose an automatic interpolation algorithm for robot spraying trajectories based on cubic Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) curves, to solve the problem of sparse and incomplete trajectory points of the head and heel of the shoe sole when extracting robot motion trajectories using structured-light 3D cameras and to ensure the robot joints move smoothly, so as to achieve a good effect of automatic spraying of the shoe sole with a 7-degree-of-freedom (DOF) robot.Design/methodology/approachFirstly, the original shoe sole edge trajectory position points acquired by the 3D camera are fitted with NURBS curves. Then, the velocity constraint at the local maximum of the trajectory curvature is used as the reference for curve segmentation and S-shaped acceleration and deceleration planning. Immediately, real-time interpolation is performed in the time domain to obtain the position and orientation of each point of the robot motion trajectory. Finally, the inverse kinematics of the anthropomorphic motion of the 7-DOF robot arm is used to obtain the joint motion trajectory.FindingsThe simulation and experiment prove that the shoe sole spraying trajectory is complete, the spraying effect is good and the robot joint movement is smooth, which show that the algorithm is feasible.Originality/valueThis study is of good practical value for improving the quality of automated shoe sole spraying, and it has wide applicability for different shoe sole shapes.

Monitoring the phenological development of agricultural plants is of high importance for farmers to adapt their management strategies and estimate yields. The aim of this study is to analyze the sensitivity of remote sensing features to phenological development of winter wheat and winter barley and to test their transferability in two test sites in Northeast Germany and in two years. Local minima, local maxima and breakpoints of smoothed time series of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data of the Sentinel-1 VH (vertical-horizontal) and VV (vertical-vertical) intensities and their ratio VH/VV; of the polarimetric features entropy, anisotropy and alpha derived from polarimetric decomposition; as well as of the vegetation index NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) calculated using optical data of Sentinel-2 are compared with entry dates of phenological stages. The beginning of stem elongation produces a breakpoint in the time series of most parameters for wheat and barley. Furthermore, the beginning of heading could be detected by all parameters, whereas particularly a local minimum of VH and VV backscatter is observed less then 5 days before the entry date. The medium milk stage can not be detected reliably, whereas the hard dough stage of barley takes place approximately 6–8 days around a local maximum of VH backscatter in 2018. Harvest is detected for barley using the fourth breakpoint of most parameters. The study shows that backscatter and polarimetric parameters as well as the NDVI are sensitive to specific phenological developments. The transferability of the approach is demonstrated, whereas differences between test sites and years are mainly caused by meteorological differences.

Abstract The study of the characteristics of the plasma-wave interaction in helicon plasmas near the lower hybrid frequency has been carried out. The (0D) dispersion relation is derived to analyse the properties of the wave propagation and the 1D cylindrical plasma-wave interaction model is established to investigate the power deposition and implement the parametric analysis. It is concluded that the lower hybrid resonance is the main mechanism of the power deposition in helicon plasmas when the RF frequency is near the lower hybrid frequency and the power deposition mainly concentrates a very thin layer near the boundary. Therefore, it causes that the plasma resistance has a large local peak near the lower hybrid frequency and the variation of the plasma density and the parallel wavenumber lead to the frequency shifting of the local peaks. It is found that the magnetic field is still proportional to the plasma density for the local maximum plasma resistance and the slope changes due to the transition.

The photovoltaic evaporative chimney is a novel solar-cooling system that serves a double purpose: it increases the efficiency of the photovoltaic (PV) panels and it cools down a water stream which can be used to dissipate the heat from a refrigeration cycle. One of the major issues arising from the operation of the chimney is the temperature stratification in the panel due to the movement of the air in the chimney. This effect can trigger the activation of the bypass diodes of the module, creating local maximum power points (MPP) that can compromise the grid-tied inverter tracking. To fill this gap, this paper deals with the design and implementation of an I–V curve measurement system to be used in the performance analysis of the system. The I–V curve tracer consists of a capacitive load controlled by a single board computer. The final design includes protections, capacitor charging/discharging power electronics, remote commands inputs, and current, voltage, irradiance, and temperature sensors. The results show that the modules bypass diodes are not activated during the tests, and no local MPPs appear. Moreover, the curves measured show the benefits of the photovoltaic chimney: the cooling effect increases the power generated by the PV panels by around 10%.
